The year he bought it they finished 40-42 also he bought it mid season in January.
The year before was Dirk rookie's season.
The next year they won 53-29.
My point when he purchased the team they already had a core of players that finish 9th and one spot out of the playoffs.
It's not like Cuban help acquire Dirk Steve or Finely know those guys were their already and by the team he bought the team were starting to mesh.
Now what did the mavericks do in Cuban's first off season as the owner??

Well the three players who were there before he purchased the team had career years statistic wise.

My point the Mavericks seem to be on their way for a dramatic turn before Mark Cuban was the owner because of the players they had.
Now if those players came after he purchase the team then okay I agree but they didn't.
