MORE ON:NYPD

A scooter-riding suspect trying to flee a Bronx drug bust died when an undercover NYPD sergeant threw a cooler at him – prompting the department to suspend the cop and warn its rank-and-file about possible “unrest” Thursday, police sources said.
The sergeant, identified by the NYPD as Erik Duran, was conducting a buy-and-bust operation on Aqueduct Avenue near West 190th Street in Kingsbridge Heights around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect, identified as Eric Duprey, took off, the sources said.
Duran allegedly chucked what’s believed to be a plastic cooler at the fleeing man — causing him to lose control of his scooter, strike a parked car and fall to the ground, according to the sources.
He suffered body trauma and was pronounced dead by EMS workers at the site of the crash.
Duran was suspended Thursday, the NYPD said in a statement.

“Early today, New York City Police Department Sergeant Erik Duran was suspended from duty without pay following a fatal incident in the Bronx on Wednesday afternoon involving a man attempting to flee from the police on a motorcycle,” the department said in an official statement.
“The city’s medical examiner will determine the cause of death.”
An alert that went out internally to those in the department, and was obtained by The Post, warned officers that the incident could spark a strong public reaction.

“We had an incident in the Bronx with narcotics that is high potential for unrest,” the memo said.
The notice advised officers to remind colleagues to keep their helmets and batons in their police cruisers and to set up barricades, especially at historic locations.
State Attorney General Letitia James’ office was leading the investigation into the fatal encounter, with the help of the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division, the department said in its statement.

New York sells drugs legally they’re called dispensaries. So is ole boy a criminal if he selling narcotics also?… the only criminal was the violent badge maniac

Narcotics turns NYC streets into sick violent slums. I saw it happen in real time from the 70's. I have no sympathy for narcotics dealers. Two days ago I watched a 10 minute video of a narcotics dealer running from cops on a high power motorcycle. Eventually the suspect was knocked off his bike. Luckily he survived. I can't image those cops getting censured if the suspect had died in pursuit.

Heroin, crack does that. They never specified what he was selling but I do know nyc is legally in the drug game now so why are they against independent drug dealers when they are big bizz of drug dealing. They even letting them yemen rock with all the weed stores all over ny.. go throw coolers at them

Those cats in the weed spots aren't running. They're in the store. When perpetrators flee from cops with bikes or cars in NYC they put a gang of us at risk for death or injury. I've been here long enough to have seen enough of it to still be vex about it.

By no means did that young man deserve death,
maaan this is what so stupid about our people

dude is doing shit to make a neighborhood shitty -

the cops start to chase him and he falls off a fucking scooter trying to run and dies -

the thought process should NOT be " the cops killed him "

his own stupidity killed him - trying to be slick killed him - GRAVITY and the laws of Physics killed him ...

there was a video where a kid jumped off a platform trying to run away from the cops and broke his legs because ....its a fucking train platform thats a 30 foot drop to the nearest surface.

did the cops break his legs? no his dumb decision to run and jump broke his legs

this dudes dumb decision to 1) ride a fucking scooter without a helmet and 2) decide to run from the cops is what killed him .....

we have got to stop co-signing dumb shit

You know how you know the situation is fucked up, even nypd suspended that nig without pay.. usually when they co-sign something dudes get suspended with pay.. the fact they ain’t paying him means they already distancing themselves from him and don’t be surprised if ole boy get in more trouble for his actions. They actually got semi rules on how they pursue individuals on bikes cause of shit like this.. nypd probably worried about backlash with potential lawsuit, protest, etc.. wouldn’t be surprised if dude get hit with a charge if an active protest starts

I saw the video on whatsapp. The cop grabbed a cooler from someone on the sidewalk and threw it at the rider as he was fleeing. Dude on the scooter was going pretty fast and fell off then slid into a parked car.
I don't know the nypds policies pertaining to apprehending people that are fleeing on scooters. And just because he got suspended it doesn't mean that he's guilty of breaking policy. Sometimes they just suspend you and you beat the charges when you go to departmental trial.
Either way stupid games stupid prizes. He did some dumb shit and got what he got.

That shit was beyond ridiculous. Dude was fleeing with speed on the sidewalk on a one way street. He played that stupid ass game and won the grand prize.

Dude got killed for a nonviolent offense.. let that sink in.. in fact if a civilian would’ve threw the cooler at the dude he would literally would be getting charged for either murder or manslaughter

He got killed because he did some stupid shit that he knew might very well get himself or someone else killed. Mans was carrying narcotics, fleeing arrest and speeding on the sidewalk in an illegal scooter. None of those things are punishable by death. But you know that you're rising your own life and the lives of others when you do it.

I don't get what people don't realize. Cops are paid to protect citizens not kill them. Throwing a cooler at a person riding a scooter has a high chance of killing them. Why would we be cool with cops throwing coolers at people. Makes no sense. We are assuming the cops were even justified in chasing him in the first place.

This adversarial system we have with these supposed professionals thinking they are playing cowboys and Indians is ridiculous. So what if he gets away. They can still indict him for eluding and safely apprehend.

The guy on the bike posed no danger to the cop. There is no justifiable reason for causing his death.

Is allegedly selling drugs a crime, worthy of death? No

Is fleeing a cop on a scooter a crime worthy of death?
No

That cop was close enough to do numerous other things to stop that chase, he chose to take a civilians personal property and throw it at the suspects head......

Now that civilian is out of a cooler and traumatized, because of the cop. A suspect is dead, families are devastated.....

It didn't have to go like that fam

Theres just no empathy or compassion at all

So what were the numerous other things that the officer was close enough to do?

Did you actually see the video?
Yes it's posted above. It's kind of blurry but it looks like he was waiting to throw the cooler, not the guy in the blue jersey(?) But he appears to be standing next to that guy and as the scooter approaches he hits the suspect right in the head....

I didn't sign up for that job, it's not my job to tell him what else he could've did. But I can say thay hitting someone in the head with an ice cooler while they are riding on a scooter with no helmet is probably not the best decision......

What happened to we've got his plates, it's too dangerous to chase, we'll track the bike down and get him later?

Wait do if dude hit your mother or child running from the police then what ?? Sayi g he posed no danger is absolutely not true because he was riding on the sidewalk where people walk

As for WHY he was running (over a non violent offense ) well people die from doing shit that isn't significant-

drop your cellphone and die trying to get it - dumb way to die

Don't wear a helmet and fall while roller blading- dumb way to die

Drink 2 gallons of water in a short time period on a dare and die - dumb way to die

The rules about pursuing someone are for when the cops are in a CAR - not chasing you on foot

Granted they suspended him but as dude said thats more to mollify dummies that may wanna do other dumb shit who are upset a dummy got killed doing dumb shit

Are we really at a point to where becuase the police chase you for doing something ( be it minor or major ) that becuase that person gets themselves killed that we want coos to chose NOT to chase someone??

This is the craziest and dumbest fucking shit to see how dudes are actually thinking the cops did something wrong by chasing and hitting a dude fleeing that should be getting arrested.

He didn't shoot the guy -

he did what he was allowed to do and hit him -the same as if he tazed the guy and the same shit have happened ( hit his head by falling to ground )

The fact that dudes are just like let him.get away because he is running and it risks the possibility that he could die - well fuck all why even complain about police not being proactive??? Cop just stood there and lt him run becuase its not a major offense and he hits you mother or your child then you get upset right??

None of that shit happened. What happened was a cop threw a water cooler at a person on a scooter and that person died. The cop has a higher responsibility to the public than the criminal. It's the cops JOB to protect.

You aparently are cool if a cop hits you with a cooler while you are riding a scooter. You could have died drinking water right. That's some dumb ass logic to forgive reckless conduct by a government official.

Whats the difference between hitting him with a stick or a plastic cooler ?? Becuase he is allowed to HIT YOU if you're fleeing

Oh and selling drugs causes people to die - plenty of the same drugs he was helping to sell cause people to OD becuase they cut the shit with Fentanyl or make the shit worse making Tranq

FOH with your whole ridiculous cop should have let him do dangerous shit to get away argument
