Mac or PC - Which do you use?

Sup fam. It’s your boy once again bringing another question to the forum. This time I wanted to know how many Mac users we have out there versus PC users. I actually have a similar thread going, but that one addresses laptops by manufacturer, in general. Here, I want to see if Mac users outweigh PC users or vice versa. More specifically, I would like to know what the advantages to using one over the other may be. Any information that you can share would be extremely beneficial to me. I thank all in advance who choose to be a part of this discussion. You would be helping me out in a big way.

It is far more reliable, and the OS is so much more stable than Windows. Everything works more efficiently and no virus or spyware !

Thanks for sharing that with me, DJ. I really appreciate the info. As for what you said, it's something that I've heard over and over at this point. I have always been a Windows user, so you can understand why I've waited this long to explore other options. I spent most of this afternoon on Mac's website, and what I've read and watched is amazing. I can't believe its taken me this long to look into Apple.

To those who use both, which do you prefer/use most? Are you using them on the same system (Mac), or do you have separate machines for each OS?

everything you can do on a pc you can do on a mac without the hastle and with less need to upgrade as apple does not abandon their previous hardware. they dont sell previous hard ware and dont expect much in hardware support as when they go new they stick to the new hardware. but they will still add driver and OS support for older hardware.


the only valid comparison is gaming. if your a hardcore pc gamer dont expect much from the mac. i didnt care when i made the switch from pc to mac as i just decided to ride with the consoles.

brought a pc from work to my house to use as a media center for my ps3 and 360. within weeks of setting it up and adding virus and ad blockers my machine was infested. i erased the drive, shut it down and its sitting in my closet waiting for me to throw it out. set up an imac in its place and not one issue since. typing on my other imac now.

Yeah, I know. That's really the only thing that's giving the Mac an advantage over the Lenovo ThinkPad for me right now. You can't beat being able to run two operating systems on one laptop.

You can do it on any Intel based Mac and you can run Windows in a window on your Mac desktop simultaniously with Parallels or VMFusion.

If you wanna write software, play real videogames, manage dividends, run a business or run for president...go for the PC.

PCs will give you a greater ROI, no matter what way you look at it. Less expensive. Lots of Freedom. More opportunities, jobs, entertainment, plus everything is just way more available and "free'er".

Any category you wanna use (Good or Bad), the PC will have a greater total. Lots of diversity, variety, even consistency in the realm the PC.

I'm sorry you feel that way about my threads, homie. But as Jamie Foxx used to say, contraire corn-fritter. I am not getting paid or filling out surveys. I am legitimately trying to figure out what I want in each of the threads. I have been in front of my computer from 4:30 this afternoon to now (with some breaks of course) researching Macbooks. Yesterday, I spent pretty much all day on Lenovo's website.

As for the other threads, thanks to the Cologne thread, I have way more cologne than I know what to do with now. The Sprint phone pictured in my original post is the cell phone that I actually own and I am a Sprint customer (I can't complain too much). I never went with Vonage because I got the Sprint phone. Thanks to someone who posted in my Anti-virus thread, I found out that my cable company (Comcast) offers free virus protection and that's what I'm rolling with. Posing questions on this board really does work and, thanks to some really cool people who don't mind helping out, I've made some good purchases for myself, not some consumer survey or telemarketing company (I can't stand anything about the telemarketing industry). And finally, I am a finance major. I haven't had to take a marketing class since Spring 2004.

People have told me that the higher initial cost balances out in the end because of fewer hardware and software issues. I see where you're coming from when you talk about more available stuff for free, but what do you mean by more opportunities and jobs? Pardon my ignorance, but I really don't know what you mean when you mention those. Everything else I understand, and even if I decide to go with the Macbook in the end, I'll still have my destop PC which operates on XP. Thanks.

One of the biggest things for me in regards to linux is stability...I run two linux workstations at work...A debian box and and Ubuntu box...both have been up and running for several months ...meaning I have not turned them off or rebooted them...and the performance has not changed one bit...cant do that with windows so much...windows will become sluggish over time...Mac OSX same deal.

With both Mac and Windows OS's installing apps will slow the machine down if you are a a power user like my self. This applies to Windows more than MAC OSX...OSX runs pretty well for a long time desktop wise.

Laptop wise is a different story. My macbook pro consistently runs @ 135 degrees Fahrenheit...which is why the 1st one I had ..the lcd burnt out in the 1st week..personally if my job didnt buy it for me ...I would never own it just for the hardware alone. The plus side about buying a mac is that it works right out the box...Apple puts alot of useful software on the mchine for work and play.
An the one other important thing about PC's ...CONTROL overthe hardware...with macs there is none...with pc you can upgrade to your hearts content...and I'm mainly talking about internal hardware upgrades.Overall you get more for your money with getting a pc

I read somewhere yesterday during my research that they addressed the heat issue with the newer Macbook pros. Apparently, they are supposed to get lukewarm now, instead of scorching hot. Since you say that you would have never owned a Macbook if your job did not purchase it for you, may I ask what you would have owned? I am torn right now between Mac, Lenovo Thinkpad, or Toshiba. In my other thread, the Thinkpad and Mac got ringing endorsements. Also, the Sony Vaio has a lot of fanfare. I really wish I could just close my eyes and whichever computer my finger lands on, that would be the system I went home with. The whole decision process can be so daunting and tedious.

I, too, have been very fortunate in avoiding major problems with viruses in my 11+ years of "PC-ing." Outlaw, I'm afraid you might be the last of what appears to be a dying breed. Mac is gaining staunch supporters at every turn it seems. Though I haven't completely made up my mind and probably won't for at least another few weeks, I have to admit that the Mac supporters make very compelling arguments about why PC users should make the leap. Before coming to the fam here, I was pretty sure that I was going to go with a Toshiba or a Thinkpad. I had not even considered a Mac until so many people on here suggested it in my laptop thread. That's what made me start this thread specifically addressing operating systems. So far, I thank you all for the input.

That's awesome, jinsane. You're just another one who is giving the Thinkpad an amazing review. I tell you man, I can't believe how many people speak so highly of them. You should visit my other thread to see just how many times the Thinkpad is mentioned. If I do decide to stay with PC, that will be the direction I go for sure.

again all depending. a mac can last a common user years before needing an upgrade. a cheaper pc now costs more later as newer software and OS upgrades demand higher end hardware. it actually comes out to be the same. in the long run.

i used to build pc's, secure them, tweak them, then upgrade them, then upgrade them, then upgrade them, then oh shit this new os or app dont work, down grade it.. there are many happy pc users who know how to lock their machines down and keep them running smooth as butter.

the mac is the same only with less work.

listening to music? itunes

creating music? macs are the standard in studios. there are great apps on pc that most home musicians use but any studio is decked out with macs.

magazine publishing? macs

office apps? they make those for macs too.

software installs? for the most part its just drag and drop the app to the folder thats it.

i'm not sure what people mean by free'r, i havent paid for shit in years.

also like i said, with the streaming to consoles, windows media 11 was a headache and inclusive to formats it wanted you to work with. the other third party apps worked but they had bugs and required alot of optimizing.

the make third party apps are usually a 305k file that you add to the prefferences and it runs. thats it. thats my experience anyway.



here is how i see the rate of return.

there are people running mac os x (not leopard) running final cut on a grey ppc mac that came out in 2000 for their home business. 8 years later.

the obvious choice is here. why choose when you can ultimately run both and get the advantages of both. where one lacks boot up the other os.

Dying breed..lol.far from it. It will take atleast a decade before PCs become a dying breed. And trust me when I tell you, that you never want Apple to grow too much bigger than what they are. Why? All these viruses are written for Windows OSes because about 95% of the world uses windows. If that shifted to the 95% of the world uses OSX or any Mac OS, it would be the same problem. Why would any one waste time writing a virus to dismantle any Mac OS? It's pointless, cause it wouldn't cripple any corporations, millions of homes, etc. etc.. Also, if need be, you can also install OSX on a PC, just like you can install WinXP on a Mac. The closer a Mac becomes a PC, the easier it is to use either OS for a Mac or PC. I use a PC, cause I upgrade parts more often than the average user. Hell the side panel stays off most of the time, just trying out different hardware. Also, I use it for games & beta testing. Good Luck on your journey. Either one is good, just have to decide what you need more.

The "dying-breed" comment was just me being a smartass. Outlaw is a cool dude and he's pretty funny so I just threw that his way. I know perfectly well that its going to take a very long time for Mac OSX to overtake any Windows-based OS. I also agree, as do most people, that the virus problem will become a huge issue once Mac becomes a bigger player, if they ever become a bigger player. You did educate me on something. You mention that the same way I could get a Mac and put a Windows-based OS on it is the same way that I can get a PC and put OSX on it. So that means that I could, in fact, jump on a Lenovo and put OSX on it then? If yes, that greatly simplifies my decision. I would have the best of both worlds right there; the desireable OSX and the tank Lenovo Thinkpad. Is this the case? Would I be able to do that? If yes, then you just gave me new hope, Ensabah.
