Licensed Group Home... Does Anyone Have One?

Greetings Fam,
I took the California State test for a Licensed Group Home several weeks ago: I passed. Now I'm waiting for my "Certification Certificate."

Does anyone have experience with Group Homes. I want to create a Group Home for Black boys aged 7-11. My license will let me start off with six children. I want to try to end the "School to Prison" pipeline (if I can). One of my Real Estate partners is going to help me fund the Group Home; but I'll hold the license.

I have to put together a "Plan of Operation," which I'm putting together now.

I'm not the smartest tool in the box, but I do care about children. I raised two boys, one was in Law school before he passed away, and my other son will be started his clinicals next month for a surgical technician. I know that I can help other children succeed in some form or fashion.

Good luck in your endeavor bro. I helped group home companies get started in NC during my business consulting days. Every state is different however so the funding streams and the regulations in CA I'm sure are different. As far as operation plan I would imitate instead of create. Start to network with other companies and people in the industry see if you can get a policy and procedure manual and use that to start creating yours. There are certain things that are going to be necssary of any organization and there are going to be things that can make your home unique.

Thank you, Brother. I found a Plan of Operation and I've just finished digitizing it so I can make the text editable. I'll be going through it removing certain things and adding other things to tailor it to our needs.

I've joined a couple of Group Home group this week. I've noticed that most of the group founders enjoy talking about themselves, versus sharing ideas for newbies like myself. But, I'm in it to win it. So, I'll fight through the nonsense and the arrogance.

Try and reach out to sponsors like local businesses, I hate to say it but the police dept (black officers), parks and recreation places like that. Even car dealerships like to have their name on something positive. Go to city council meetings and get you name out there. Best wishes to you bruh

I understand what you're saying. But I know for a fact that there are attorneys, doctors, and other profession people on BGOL.

I know we clown and talk shit, but there are some brilliant people here. I've been on here a while, and I've learned that BGOL is an excellent resource for all types of fields and endeavors.

This place is like a Think Tank/Barbershop. Also, I know how to weed out those who are clowning and those who are sincere. Plus, I won't give up any pertinent information that would ever harm a child. I'm doing this to help not hinder...

Most people just dream and wish. Well, I'm putting my hands and my resources to help children who need help. So, I'm willing to take the help from anyone who'll give it. If I have to go to the moon, I will. If I have to go to the gutter, I'll go there too. This really isn't about me... It's about children who look like me though.

This board is more than about pussy pics to me. If you look at my posts, you see that my interests vary greatly.

i would suggest working at one or several before you start your own

Uh you realize we in a whole new millenium, this may have been a porn board twenty years ago,

No problem. One thing I found about the successful homes is that they diversified there service offerings. Every resident is going to come in with certain services that are approved by the state. One of the services is going to be residential care but they may have community based services such as assistance in school, therapy etc. The more services you can provide the more you are going to be able to support the residential services. So many providers I saw also hired and trained community care workers so that they could go with them to school and they could get that money as well. But for every service you provide you have to be licensed by the state and you need to be able to bill medicare. Once you have your NPI number and you are licensed to provide mutliple services you can get in with the case managers to start getting clients that fit that profile. That's when you have a licesnse to print money. You are billing medicare/medicaid weekly for your services and getting paid directly. The biggest hiccup is paperwork. You WILL get audited by medicare and by the state. Your notes must match up with the services you bill for. That is where most providers get in trouble. Not having their notes back up their services will land you out of business and bankrupt.

BGOL is bigger than a porn board. Only about 30% of what is talked on here is actually porn. Most of it is social. But by him reaching out on this porn board he connected with me. A person who is a lawyer has an MBA and for 8 years was a CFO of a Mental Health services company with 12 group homes serving 80 residential consumers and over 300 non-residential customers. I helped grow the company from 1mill a year revenue to 12 million a year revenue over those 8 years.

So as my dad told me never assume people don't know what they are talking about based on where they are or what they look like.

Thank you again Brother. That was a wealth of information right there.

I had an associate say something very similar. They recommenced that I add a mental health certificate to my license, or what ever the cert is called. They said that a lot of children have issues ranging from mental abuse and trauma to food anxiety. So, it will help them if I can help them cope with some of those issues as well.

Thank you, Brother. Real talk, I never planned on doing anything like this.

But one of my mentors told me, "You have a gift with youngsters. Both of your boys went to college, and you're responsible for several others going to college as well. If you set a group home for Black Children, I'll back your play."

So I thought about it... talked it over with the wife. The next thing I know, I'm taking the exam.

That's exactly it. Whatever you feel your residents will need in there treatment look to provide that service. The population you serve will determine which services you want to get licensed in or have someone on staff that is licensed in. But the mental health services are huge. There is a bigger margin on those services than residential. Residential is tough unless you are providing those additional services. The biggest funding source is medicaid but there are state programs that supplement as well as different departments where there might be money available. The Department of Labor often supports vocational programs and whatever state agency in your state that deals with vocational trainings may provide money as well.

Providing these wrap around services will create better outcomes for your residents and allow you to improve their experience.
 
When you say you want to start a group home I assume you are talking about the foster care system. The need for foster placements is high nationwide from what I’ve seen.
I don’t know how things are run in CA bit here in Texas there’s a ton of scrutiny on placements so tons of people and agencies are quitting.
If you do open your home to foster youth I’d definitely recommend carefully screening what kids you will accept. Take a look close look at the kid’s previous placements and why they aren’t there anymore. Be sure any family that will be around the children have a clear understanding of what they are dealing with for their brown protection.
Also google CPS placement issues in your area. Just last week I read a couple of stories about problems in Los Angeles and in Sacramento. Basically kids wilding out in hotels and offices which is the norm here in Texas.

The Group Home that I'll be certified for will be able to house six children max. I'm going to provide long term care "> 18 months." I don't think you have that number in our Foster Care facilities here. Group Home is it's own license, different from Foster Care under California codes etc... I'm not an attorney though, so don't quote me.

I will be scrutinizing children's records carefully. I already know that the kids are traumatized in some form or fashion. The only kids I won't accept are arsonists, sexual predators, and the suicidal. I think I can work with almost everything else. I'm not dealing with the seriously impaired either. But, I'm up for working with the misguided, some drug use, and some who are gang affiliated (I come from a family of gangsters, so I should be able to understand of them).
 
Greetings Fam, they finally sent me my Group Home certificate.

I've made contact with various group homes across the country, and so far the owners have been more than generous with their information. Right now, we're working on our "Program" and we're looking at a location. We'll be looking at staff in a month or so.

I have a meeting with a Walmart executive next week. We're hoping that they'll help with donations etc.

I just want to make a positive difference in a young person's life.
