We won't know if he's made the smart play until next season. If a team like the Texans give him guaranteed money consistent with a player of his value (RB1 and WR2 combined), he's going to get paid. And having 200 less carries on your body (if he comes back and gets a full workload to finish the season) going into free agency helps your case and decreases the chances of a major injury. Bell was getting 400 touches a year. He deserved the bread. Most people admit that after Gurley got paid but the Steelers didn't want to set the RB market and after Gurley got paid it was too late.

Too much has been said by Bell and Team, I don’t think it’s wise to bring him back into the locker room, it’s going to be a huge distraction, just on a teammate/coaching level aspect, next you have to deal with the media! The final straw is when Tomlin said they want volunteers not hostages. Then you have to look at it from Bells side, this is all about money! Why should he come back for 6 million and run the risk of injury messing up his chance for his next contract. Probably because the Steelers figured they needed money for defensive free agents. Dupree is in his last year of his deal and has underperformed until this year. Who knew Bostic would be this solid at the middle linebacker spot. They needed roster flexibility to make possible moves. That scenario is very real.
