Late start, new approach disappoint Lauryn Hill fans at Oakland concert

Lee Hildebrand, Special to The Chronicle

Friday, June 29, 2007

The public meltdown of Lauryn Hill, which has been apparent for five years, moved further into the realm of the bizarre Wednesday night during a late-starting sold-out show at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. The 32-year-old New Jersey singer-rapper's 90-minute performance mixed new, unfamiliar material with hits from a decade past, most of them rendered unrecognizable by radical new arrangements and a blaring, poorly balanced sound mix.

Aural audience response was divided between cheers and boos. Others sat and stood in silence, their mouths agape at what they were hearing and seeing.

Her hair in an unkempt rust-colored Afro, Hill wore a green-and-yellow plaid jacket that appeared to be made of wool and an ankle-length black skirt, looking not unlike a bag lady one might encounter at a taco truck on International Boulevard. She held a microphone in her right hand and a black handkerchief in her left, frequently wiping sweat from her face as she paced the stage.

At one point during the show, the singer tripped and fell, landing flat on her backside. "That's what I get for wearing high heels," she said as she rose to her feet.

Only during Hill's version of Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which she recorded with the Fugees in 1995, did her ensemble of 10 instrumentalists (all from the Bay Area), a DJ and a quartet of female harmony singers become quiet enough for her voice to cut through clearly. A raspy tone, cracked notes, clipped phrases and melismas that meandered painfully off pitch demonstrated just how badly Hill's once-commanding pipes have deteriorated.

Most of the music, including old favorites such as "Ready or Not" and "To Zion," as well as newer material recorded locally last year but reportedly rejected by Columbia Records for being too uncommercial, was treated to highly syncopated arrangements drawing on Afro-pop and reggae elements. Few featured the backbeats with which fans of her older material are most comfortable, but rather a frenetically throbbing pulse driven by a three-man percussion section that included former Tony Toni Toné drummer Brian Collier. There's nothing wrong in experimenting with new rhythms; the primary problem was in Hill's slipshod presentation.

Some concertgoers who had paid as much as $89.50 for tickets were requesting refunds even before Hill hit the stage -- two hours and 15 minutes after the concert's scheduled 7:30 start and 80 minutes after the opening act, Jupiter Rising, had finished its set. This was an improvement, however, over club shows last summer in San Francisco and Santa Cruz at which her performances began more than two hours behind schedule. Other patrons started their exits during her first song, and the trickle turned to a flow after a speech late in the show during which the vocalist attempted to explain her new musical direction.

"When you're young, gifted and black -- and female -- you have to have a lot of endurance," she said, borrowing from the title of a song made famous by Nina Simone, a singer who'd had a somewhat similar meltdown more than three decades earlier.

"I can't fit into a stereotype that makes me comfortable for you," she added. "If that makes me feel uncomfortable to you, I need to find some new company."

Hill had drawn a line in the sand. With many of the disgruntled customers now gone, she continued on to no further boos. One suspects, however, that if Hill remains on her present unprofessional path, the company with grow thinner and thinner.

When she was down here in Brasil a couple of weeks ago.... I thought the show was tight... but it was definitely "different"... it had more of a rock flavor to it than I would have liked..it should have been more hip-hop... and she did do a lot of unknown material..but I thought some of her new shit was nice...

I still feel Ms. Hill...and if something is troubling her, may she manifest the strength and support needed to face whatever it is and move forward.

Entertainers these days are weak.

Back in the day, groups and performers like Sly & The Family Stone and Rick James could get coked out beyond measure and not have that shit fuck up their music and performance.

co sign

in fact, the "drugs" helped them while making their music! lol

She is gone. She has gone mad..
Broken by many different negative forces at play on america and beyond.

She is depressed and rebellious.
She dresses and looks the way she feels inside.
Her time has come and gone and she knows it but pretends not to care about what fans want.

She believed in and fell in love and bore kids for a "rasta man" only to find the same pain and turmoil she thought she was avoiding by dating a none american man.

She is now afraid to be what the public wants cause she is rightfully convinced that the public does not really care about her at all. But at the end of the day she is very very rich (50 million worth) so she really does not need anything material from this world which is all it is willing to give in 2007

I'm not so sure about that. Every Rick James album after "Throwdown" for the most part sounded like...

[insert nasty picture here]
And he was on some heavy DRUGS.

See you soon. -MM

This article was way too negative and hard on Lauryn, as if they never liked Lauryn in the first place.

Seems as if they purposely over exaggerate things. I don't get the feeling things went that bad.

It's only 22 sec. of worth of the concert but whoever wrote this must've hated Lauryn.

Not saying you are wrong, but where did you hear she is worth 50 million today. I would love to see that.

Interesting take and I agree with most of it. She is being very rebellious against anything that appears to be associated with popular culture and trying so hard to "buck against the system":smh: that it seems to affect her performance. Why are you trying so hard girl?? To bad if you ask me.:smh: Bring back the ole sexy ass Lauryn Hill:yes: Who cares if thats what "the media" wanted you to be...little mama, you did it WELL, and it came off as intelligent, karismatic, sexy, afrocentric, talented, sane, provocative, and passionate. I miss old Lauryn.:(

man im a fan of lauryn but if i paid 90 bucks to see this crazy bullshit i would jump up on stage and kick her in her ovaries :smh: :smh: :smh:

I hate to say it, but I think the article was on point. This is not the same Lauryn of 5-6 years ago. And that clip really didn't help change my mind. It didn't sound like the article was straight up attacking her. It just sounds like they were dismayed by the performance like most people were. I mean....alot of folks did get up and leave...not before she came out, but when she was performing. The article couldn't have been too off base.

I always loved Lauryn Hill. She was my favorite female rapper. If she comes here I would of pay $89.00 bucks......for a family of four. I don't think she's on drugs though. I think she's an introvert, those types develop strange habits, likes and dislikes. They end up weird, with orange hair. They rock leather jackets under plad blouses with feather sticking out the top.

Remember rich people often times grow to be eccentric. Especially when they're very talented and excell at a young age. She'll be alright. She just needs to suck it up and perform what her audience wants to hear, and not what she wants.

OP

WOW!!

I know someone who went to that show in Oakland. He said she sounded drunk and/or high, slurring the songs. And she showed up 2:30 hours late. Show was supposed to start at 7:30, she got on stage at 10. Sad

Sounds like every rap concert I've ever been except MC Hammer's back in the early 90s. Say what you will but dude knew how to put on a show! She's a lost child. Just grow the fuck up. I dare her to put that crazy shit out, NOBODY will buy it. She's more interested in popping out babies then putting in work as an artist. Plus I doubt this broad is legally married. She's just one in a long line of crazy baby mommas.

Damn, yall run-for-the-hills niggas in this thread. You read one post and now she's on crack. I havent heard enough news on her after her last album to make a comment on her state of mind, finances , etc. Has anyone actually seen her in concert since the Miseducation. yall sound like a bunch of unwavoring idiots "she's change since 99" "it's been about 10 years why does she look different" " why is she trying something new" come man let her release an album first. Let her do a crazy interview admitting to drug use. Let her have a nervous breakdown on MTV before called her crazy.

Miseducation is on my top 3 of albums released
in the past decade. that unplugged joint she released some time
ago did not do it for me though. even to this day
she just seems to be emotionally distress at times

Rohan really got her open I beleive, Her natural energy
does not seem to be what it use to. When I was a senior in High School
Lauryn and Fugees were just getting started & rocked our auditorium on the surprise tip they came through our school. Everyone was yelling Freestyle, Freestyle Wyclef and Praz were okay but Lauryn was so sharp with it lyrically and vocally..

I knew back then she was gonna be huge
man I hope she give us another classic record.
