When I used to be a hiring manager I automatically disqualified any males with dreads regardless of their qualification or capacity to perform the job. There wasn't a corporate policy against dreads but personally I find niggas with dreads to be disgusting. Ofcourse I had to make an argument against the prospective employee that had nothing to do with his dreads

What happened at this job? Did you run away potential talent that could have helped the company but couldn't because of your personal hangups? I hope you never have that type of control again.

Long hair in Corporate America is frowned upon so having locs is no different. Being Black with long hair is just another two strikes. Keep your hair neat, carry yourself in a professional manner and you should be ok. I see a lot of thugs with dreads nowadays. My fam has dreads. Depends on the field you're in. If you're in Marketing Industry, or computers you might get away with it. If you're in high end sales, sorry charlie, not gonna fly. You don't see other races with cornrolls or whatever. We can argue all day about cultural identity, but the man that owns the company makes the final decision at the end of the day. And they will use any excuse to excuse your ass. Dreads can be truly beautiful, women love 'em, and hair can be powerful, but there are many downfalls too, and in a corporate environment, they can be more of a hinderance. Clean cut, well spoken never fails. Its about success of you, not your hair. Look the part, get the job, make changes later. I guess dreads would equate to long hair, poney tail on other races. Wouldn't fly for a Bank of American CEO. Wouldn't fly for Colin Powell.

What I get is whatever white people want is in.

If they want powdered wigs, it is in. If they want long hair, it is in. If they want short hair, guess what? It's in.

I think it depends alot on the location.

It may be more acceptable in NYC or LA but not in middle America.

Although I can't think of any executives with dreadlocks, just admins, mailroom clerks, deliverymen, etc.... It shouldn't be the case, but white people are fickle like that and are all about the company "image".

I'm guilty of cutting my long hair to improve job prospects. I used to cut it then grow it back once hired. With dreads, that's a different story since it takes so much time and work to achieve a nice head of locks. And alot grow them because of religious purpose.

The Co-founder of Blackplanet.com has started many internet ventures and is pursuing a PhD from Harvard. He has cut his hair since this picture but he was a leading internet consultant, CEO and web advisor to many people before cutting his hair.
