An I've been broken into while home. Do not discharge that firearm unless you, " feel " ( << Read, intruder facing you inside your house ). That you or a person legitimately in your home is facing bodily harm or death.
An you better shoot center mass, two shots, if you shoot to wound and do, you may face civil charges, remember you were VERY AFRAID FOR YOUR LIFE. You shot to END that threat.
God forbid this happens to you again, but after the shooting EVACUATE YOURSELF AND FAMILY AND LEAVE YOUR HOUSE and call the police from a neighbors house, not a cell phone, police have a habit of, " Mistaking " people.
DO NOT go back to your house until the police arrive and advise them you are no longer in the house. Again, remember, you were VERY AFRAID.
If you have kids, and wifey, talk with them about a plan if they hear a crash, and someone's breaking in. It will likely be dark and if your house is multi-level especially, teach them to get into SAFE ZONES where you KNOW it's them in that corner on the ground.

Have you taken any firearm safety classes as perhaps not a requirement of your firearm purchase, but as a choice?
Get caught up, do time. Years you will not be making money, years separated from your peoples.
When a cat threatens your home, there is no FEAR. You ARE anger, you have to think clearly through that anger or it may be YOU dealing with real jail time behind YOU defending yourself.
Most firearm safety classes are going to teach you about these things.

In some states you have a duty to retreat rather than use deadly force, even in your own home. In others you may stand your ground. That's called the "Castle Doctrine."
Find an attorney who understands the justifiable use of deadly force in your state and pay his consultation fee. You alone will be held liable for your use of deadly force. If you like him keep him on retainer.
If your are forced to shoot, under no circumstances alter the scene. Don't follow the extremely bad advice of..."Stick a knife in his hand and drag him into the house." Homicide investigators aren't stupid.
DO NOT give a statement to the investigator. Be firm but polite and explain that you are more than willing to cooperate, but only after you speak with your attorney, then be quite. He is an investigator doing his job not your friend. No matter how understanding he seems.
