I'm watching Shaka Zulu on Netflix...what if they gave it the same treatment the Spartacus or 300 stories got , would it be successful?
I think so.
Thoughts?
it would do about as well as Red Tails...in the year 2042 thats about how long it would take to develop it if you started today.
according to the studio execs...they wouldn't know to market it... who's the star a black man? okay who's co-starring..another black man?
okay whose the villain yet another black man? well now you have a "black movie" and who do you market that too??
what kind of budget is it going to have?? 300 cost 65 million to make..spartacus cost 12 million to make in 1960 adjusted for inflation in 2012 thats about 90 million..
so you are NOT getting anywhere near those kinds of budgets for ZULU or SHAKA or whatever the title is.
so would it be successful? it wouldn't get out the gate..![]()

I'm sure we could fund this using pre-paid tickets thru some platform like kickstarter.
I wouldn't mind paying $40 right now to see a movie released next year.
That shit would be a hit internationally as well.
Pre-paid made movies.

if they did shaka zulu like the 300 or gladiator?
oh. sheit.
that film would be so popular and bomb. fuk it. u can even do an intense, in-depth pic about nat turner's slave rebellion and do it like they did the 300 or gladiator? THAT sheit would be like
older whites wouldn't watch it, but younger white dudes, asian dudes and intl audiences would flock to see that sheit. and of course u know black folks would keep the theaters packed
Id love to see, Toussaint, haitian independence in "300" style
that shit would change the psyche/world view of Black kids in 2 hours
shaka zulu the harmony gold production didn't have theatrical release. The movie in the OP's post is the TV miniseries and is ultimately told and narrated from a white man's POV. All other Zulu movies are about the their clashes with the white settlers.theres a few flaws in your argument.
First of all, the movie has ALREADY BEEN MADE, and people still watch it. I think it's safe to assume it's made money.
Redtails trailer WAS a war movie..and a Shaka Zulu major film would have an all black cast production based on historical figures that are neither american nor european when was the last time that happened? And as far as marketung, as long as they just show the trailer, and market it as a WAR movie, that actually looks good, instead of guilting people into it, if it looks good, people will wanna see it. Just as they already have.
I like how you play with those budget numbers to make your point. 12 million would more than cover it, and lots of Black movies get made for that number.
If Red Tails woulda been made for that, it woulda made it's money back.
All in all, it's still just speculation, and I think if the OP or someone else had the ability, it could have a very strong shot.
