I'm watching Shaka Zulu on Netflix...what if they gave it the same treatment the Spartacus or 300 stories got , would it be successful?

I think so.

Thoughts?

Id love to see, Toussaint, haitian independence in "300" style

that shit would change the psyche/world view of Black kids in 2 hours

it would do about as well as Red Tails...in the year 2042 thats about how long it would take to develop it if you started today.

according to the studio execs...they wouldn't know to market it... who's the star a black man? okay who's co-starring..another black man?

okay whose the villain yet another black man? well now you have a "black movie" and who do you market that too??

what kind of budget is it going to have?? 300 cost 65 million to make..spartacus cost 12 million to make in 1960 adjusted for inflation in 2012 thats about 90 million..

so you are NOT getting anywhere near those kinds of budgets for ZULU or SHAKA or whatever the title is.

so would it be successful? it wouldn't get out the gate..:smh:

Fucked up how that works, but you're right. Roots was made, Shaka Zulu was made. When was the last powerful/iconic majority black series/movie made? Don't say Madea.:hmm:

We talked about this in another thread. It would most definitely be a good look. An adaptation perhaps of the Charles R. Saunders novels Imaro or Dossouye. If you haven't read, check them out. Though fictional would be some great storytelling on screen.

We need to have our stories like this on the big screen. However, just like geechie mentioned that is the hurdle facing such ideas. I suggest going outside the U.S. market for investors in a film as such. Get it made independently then find a distributor.

I think it would actually. Dope idea. fuck the negativity. Just on its face, sounds WAY better tan RED TAILS. Especially if they didn't make it rated PG.

But then people would be mad at the Black on Black crime- or the way it ends being beaten by White men.

theres a few flaws in your argument.

First of all, the movie has ALREADY BEEN MADE, and people still watch it. I think it's safe to assume it's made money.

And as far as marketung, as long as they just show the trailer, and market it as a WAR movie, that actually looks good, instead of guilting people into it, if it looks good, people will wanna see it. Just as they already have.

I like how you play with those budget numbers to make your point. 12 million would more than cover it, and lots of Black movies get made for that number.

If Red Tails woulda been made for that, it woulda made it's money back.

All in all, it's still just speculation, and I think if the OP or someone else had the ability, it could have a very strong shot.

if they did shaka zulu like the 300 or gladiator?

oh. sheit.

that film would be so popular and bomb. fuk it. u can even do an intense, in-depth pic about nat turner's slave rebellion and do it like they did the 300 or gladiator? THAT sheit would be like

older whites wouldn't watch it, but younger white dudes, asian dudes and intl audiences would flock to see that sheit. and of course u know black folks would keep the theaters packed

:yes::yes::yes:

I'm sure we could fund this using pre-paid tickets thru some platform like kickstarter.

I wouldn't mind paying $40 right now to see a movie released next year.

That shit would be a hit internationally as well.

Pre-paid made movies.

;)

That's what I'm saying, all black cast kicking ass showing the world there were empires other than the anglo ones. Mel Gibson can make Apocolypto why can't their be an epic African story with violence, sex and a great narrative. I would go watch that in a hurry.

BUT you said it "older whites", those older whites run the studios too. :itsawrap:

And that's why it won't be done. I understand Danny Glover was trying to do Toussaint but wasn't getting the backing from Hollywood.

Hollywood can't release enough Big Mommas House movies though.

you are comparing a mini series to a movie....

Shaka Zulu was made in 1987 so the fact that it is on netflix and you are watching it like its new means that it is popular.

lets see if 300 or Spartacus is still being watched 25 years later

The real question is what ever happened to Duduzile Mkhize ...I sholl wanted to get with her

shaka zulu the harmony gold production didn't have theatrical release. The movie in the OP's post is the TV miniseries and is ultimately told and narrated from a white man's POV. All other Zulu movies are about the their clashes with the white settlers.

And as far as marketung, as long as they just show the trailer, and market it as a WAR movie, that actually looks good, instead of guilting people into it, if it looks good, people will wanna see it. Just as they already have.
Redtails trailer WAS a war movie..and a Shaka Zulu major film would have an all black cast production based on historical figures that are neither american nor european when was the last time that happened?

I like how you play with those budget numbers to make your point. 12 million would more than cover it, and lots of Black movies get made for that number.

I didn't play with the numbers. 12 million for a film was HUGE back in 1960.. look at the production value of that film. Those built sets and thousands of extras. To do that today would cost a pretty penny...

shit John Carter had more CGI than live action and still came in at 250 million. I think you underestimate what it takes to make a film like that.

All in all, it's still just speculation, and I think if the OP or someone else had the ability, it could have a very strong shot.

I'm just stating what would happen by todays rules and standards...I'd love to see a Shaka Zulu action film.

That could be the greatest graphic movie of all time.

the story doesn't even need to be embellished just accurate visual depiction stylized and on par with top budget... that shit is a classic.
