TAMPA, Fla. -- Joe Torre turned down the New York Yankees' offer to return as manager on Thursday.

The Yankees offered Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that would have increased his salary to $8 million based on postseason performance. Under that offer, if Torre reached the World Series in 2008, an option for 2009 would have vested.

Hey Joe Lyrics (Jimi Hendrix)

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe Lyrics

[1st verse [Oo-backing vocals on each line]]
Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Alright. I'm goin down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
Yeah,! I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.
Huh! And that ain't too cool.

[2nd verse [Ah. -backing vocal on each line]]
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down,
you shot her down.
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot you old lady down,
you shot her down to the ground. Yeah!

Yes, I did, I shot her,
you know I caught her messin' 'round,
messin' 'round town.
Uh, yes I did, I shot her
you know I caught my old lady messin' 'round town.
And I gave her the gun and I shot her!

Alright
(Ah! Hey Joe)
Shoot her one more time again, baby!
(Oo)
Yeah.
(Hey Joe!)
Ah, dig it!
(Hey)
Ah! Ah!
(Joe where you gonna go?)
Oh, alright.

[3rd verse]
Hey Joe, said now,
(Hey)
uh, where you gonna run to now, where you gonna run to?
Yeah.
(where you gonna go?)
Hey Joe, I said,
(Hey)
where you goin' to run
to now, where you, where you gonna go?
(Joe!)
Well, dig it!
I'm goin' way down south, way down south,
(Hey)
way down south to Mexico way! Alright!
(Joe)
I'm goin' way down south,
(Hey, Joe)
way down where I can be free!
(where you gonna...)
Ain't no one gonna find me babe!
(...go?)
Ain't no hangman gonna,
(Hey, Joe)
he ain't gonna put a rope around me!
(Joe where you gonna..)
You better belive it right now!
(...go?)
I gotta go now!
Hey, hey, hey Joe,
(Hey Joe)
you better run on down!
(where you gonna...)
Goodbye everybody. Ow!
(...go?)
Hey, hey Joe, what'd I say,
(Hey.......................Joe)
run on down.
(where you gonna go?)

a tear is shed in the bronx....im from ny and im hurt right now. but my thing is this....y all of our street talent is damn near untouchable, yet our professional teams can't beat high school benched players???? shit, im a till the end yankees fan, trust, but we lookin like pop warner right now. plus, they makin it look like joe torre is dead or something....espn, y'all niggas makin it worse

I told you guys a week ago that Torre was going to leave regardless of the Yankees decision.

NO! Torre should not be fired. There's nothing wrong with Torre's managing skills. He rode a dog into the playoffs. The Yankess have lacked quality pitching since their last championship. The Yankess won games because they outscored their opponents. The problem with teams like the Yankess is when they face quality pitching they get shutdown and the Yankees pitching staff can't hold back the other teams.

I'm willing to bet no other team has won as many games as the Yankees have under Torre during the last 13 years. I also believe Torre is tired of Steinbrenner and his bullshit and would welcome a change or even retirement. The Yaness lost because this team's pitching staff SUCKED! Yet they made the playoffs but mainly due to to A-Rod. No A-Rod no playoffs.

Torre has nothing to be ashamed of and you better believe if the Yankess let him go some other team will pick him up in a heartbeat. He may even have his choice of teams to select from.

Im glad Joe rejected the offer George Steinbrenner started bad mouthing him.
offered him a crap deal they knew Joe wouldnt take,so now they can say hey at least we didnt
fire him.

theyll regret this decision for decades

dudes resume was insane and they did him foul:

4 world series
10 consecutive al east champs

and he never missed the playoffs

the yankees are insane

A one-year deal of this sort (with incentives!!) is a slap in the face to a successful, veteran manager of his status. This was just sleazy way to fire him, while trying to save face by making him do the rejecting.

@ these gifs.

Fucked up but it couldn't last 4ever.

The end ot tenure for Yankee skippers have never had pretty endings.

Besides, don't cry for Torre.

He was a bum before he took the Yankee job ( 'clueless Joe'? ), now he's a legend.

So the Yankees did plenty for him as well.

Same thing for the BoSox Terry Francona who sucked before he came to Red Sox Nation.

12 straight years in the playoffs, six world series appearances; won four of them and they offer him a one year deal with a 29% reduction in pay. What assholes. Nobody can tell me that they didn't offer this lame ass contract knowing he'd turn it down.

The respectful thing to do would have been to offer him at least two years, and if things didn't turn out as they would like they could always fire him after the first year and pay him for the second. Now they'll be without Torre and probably several other players including Rivera and A-Rod. Idiots!!! :smh:

as a loyal yankee fan i will say this.

steinbrenner did this. cause he treated torre like syht for the last few years and torre just spit in the nigga face. yanks fans should get madd at torre the man gets us in the playoffs every year and made us win 4 WS. the fans should be madd at steinbrenner.

the sons need to take over the yankess. A.S.A.P

Steinbrener offer him a "Go Fuck Off" deal that he knew he wouldn't take.
You take a team to the division playoffs, and you thank the coach by offering him a 29%pay cut and a one year extension.

What part of the game is that?!

Steinbrener is under the diluted illusion that the Yankees should win every single year no matter what.

Not a bad deal he was offered, but I guess Joe felt dissed too many times especially being put on hold and told he was being fired after the season....good for him.

It is a bad deal considering all the extras that come with the job. An ungrateful owner and the pressure of having to make it to the World Series and if you don't win it, you can still be let go or not retained. The Yanks job isn't a job, it's LIFE!!! You have to be in it to win it.
