It's never too Late for a BLACK MAN to go to COLLEGE

I've been thinking about going back for either programming or nursing, but to tell the truth i'm scared...I was swindled my 1st time around by the art institute of Philadelphia. I'm now 72,000 in debt for a degree thats not real...I was just so happy to get into any school that I completely ignored all the signs...So now i'm weighing out all the factors of self learning vs school...

I sincerely wish you nothing but the best. It's ridiculous that these type of schools got away with this shit in the first place. I was just speaking with some reps from Virgina Online University, total cost for a Associate degree is $35,000 and $70,000 for a Bachelor's... "Your cap and gown is included" :hmm:

House blocks crackdown on for-profit colleges
Saturday, February 19, 2011
By Daniel Malloy, Post-Gazette Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON -- Obama administration efforts to regulate for-profit colleges suffered a blow Friday, with an overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives to block the controversial "gainful employment" rules.

Offered as an amendment to a government funding measure, the proposal faces a much stiffer test in the Senate, but the 289-136 vote -- including 58 Democrats -- is the clearest sign yet of congressional opposition to the Department of Education's initiatives and of the success of the industry's aggressive lobbying and public advocacy campaign.

People think I'm throwing salt on their wounds in this thread. The truth is that it is not cost effective to get a degree that is not marketable. Education should be an agent to social mobility but the business elites know that this information will be passed down through generations so they make it harder to be educated. Back then, when your uncle or grandfather made it without a degree, the economic and social factors were far different.

thats fucked up cause i was 45k in debt from a 4 year university and its a real university been around for close to 80 years, i feel bad for u brother. But fa real go back and please dont go to a for profit college they are rip offs, i remember the art institute of houston was trying to get me bad but i would never call the m back

seeing all my relatives and friends finish college only to go back to college and graduate again while i do nothing but sit on my ass and complain, they have given me the fire and desire to go back to school. I only have to take 2 math courses at the community college and i'll graduate from there so i think its best i finish there first before i tackle going to a four year institute.

I hear you on this one, I dropped out of high school in the 9th grade so now i have to get my GED in order to do anything. I passed almost everything well beyond the needed score but that algebra is killing me, once i get that it's off to community college to study computers then a 4 year institute.

Keep bumping this to ENCOURAGE OUR BLACK COMMUNITY ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF EDUCATION!!! Spread the word!

Yeah I got fucked over by a for profit school.Should be going into my senior year this fall but tha loan I took out when I went to the shitty ass for profit school came back to haunt me when they snatched away my financial aide at the community college I was attending.
So now I have to take some of my core classes over again cause its been 2 years since I took them.

But I gotta keep on trucking cause crying about it won"t do shit for me.

I feel ya, bruh. Keep on keepin' on and always keep your eyes on the Prize. It's more than just a degree, it's all about getting the self-discipline and ability to sacrifice that fuels any successful person's uplift.

wurd fam.

i took 7 courses (16 credits) this past fall, and came out with 5 a's and two b's.

being 25 years removed from college and working full-time, i'm doing the damned thang.

i may go into social working for a bachelors degree.

You won't make any money. Noble field but very low pay.

I posted in this thread over two years ago and I'm pissed because my ass never set foot on campus within that time. Since then I've been able to work my way up to a nice position on the job, but if the job folds, I've got nothing at the end of the day to fall back on. I'm at loss for what major to even go for anymore. Plan to sit down with a counselor sometime soon, but my ass will be back in class come spring.
