Could I find better? :dunno:

I saw this on slickdeals. I wonder if there is anything better in the sub $700 price range. I'm still not hip on the new shit with laptops. Internet (must be fast I hate waiting), music, movies, light gaming, word, excel, normal shit.

HP Pavilion g4-1125dx Laptop: AMD Phenom II P650 2.6GHz, 14" LED (1366x768) Display, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, HD4250, WiFi-N, 6-Cell, Windows 7 Prem 64-Bit

$350 + Free In-store Pick Up

Id rather a core 2 duo or faster but that laptop will be more than enough for surfing the internet and some basic movie editing

Yeah I also saw this on Slickdeals. I personally don't like HP but that price is a winner.

Intel Core 2 Duo vs AMD Phenom II only makes a difference if you need to do serious gaming, photo/movie manipulations, heavy math/science computing, etc. You fall into the same 98% of users who can use pretty much any bare bones computer to do what you need to do.

For your usage, the biggest difference in "fast internet" is having a fast internet provider, not the machine. I've got a spare 10+ year old desktop with XP hooked to 24Mbps Internet to do most of my heavy duty downloading and it works at the EXACT same download speed as the Core 2 Duo notebook I am typing on now.

All of the specs listed above are more than enough, and any price under $400 for all of that is right. The main factors that would come into play for you is the size of the screen (is 11" too small? Is 15.6" too big?) and the weight of the machine if you plan to carry it around a lot. Other than that you are good to go.

stay away from anything refurbished..

That woot deal is nice... REAL nice... But ONLY as desktop replacement. The 17.3" screen will not fit in most backpacks, and the extra weight will definitely be noticed if you carry it every day.

BTW, be sure to ALWAYS buy a refurb like this with a credit card that automatically extends the warranty. Squaretrade usually won't mess with warranties on refurbs.

who's offering that??

Microsoft Offering Students a Free Xbox 360 with PC Purchase

By Melanie Pinola, PCWorld May 23, 2011 10:54 AM

Student looking to buy a laptop or desktop computer this coming semester can pick a free Xbox 360 gaming console thanks to a pretty sweet Microsoft promotion. The Xbox deal is valid with the purchase of any Windows 7 computer starting at $699.

Students or their parents would need to verify their age (16 to 19 years old) or college enrollment (.edu email address) to qualify for the offer, which ends September 3. The offer is available at participating retailers in the US, with similar offers coming to Canada and France soon.

The promotion is a smart way for Microsoft to increase its gaming console market share, while also stimulating Windows 7 PC purchases among the valuable student population. Microsoft's press release puts it a little differently: "In one shot, with this great offer, Microsoft is giving students everything they need for a successful new school year." (I'm not sure if an Xbox 360 is really something students need for school success, but it is a sweet deal nonetheless. The Xbox 360 4GB model being given away retails for $199.)

If you don't care for or need an Xbox 360, you can instead get 10% off a new Windows 7 PC, according to Microsoft's Windows page on Facebook.

good info. Im going to get my kids a laptop for to replace an aging desktop so my son can start editing movies and my daughter will need something soon. middle school is right around the corner.

.

:smh:

LOL I was just answering GGS's question. Anybody stupid enough to spend $699+ on a basic Windows laptop for just normal school use and I-surfing (when most stores run a sale every week for an entry level unit at half that price) deserves to get got.

I was gonna cop a Macbook pro but i just couldn't do it, the processor chips and video cards in thoes things are shit.

I ended up getting a HP laptop with an AMD A8-3500M Quad core proccesor Radeon HD Graphics and 6gb of ram.

Got it for $816 after taxes. I ma try it out for a couple of days and see if i like it.If not take it back and try and find something better.
