The consequences then were different than they are now. Also, the targets are different. Entertainment circles tend to be their own little self-contained worlds. At it's peak in 1999 the record companies raked in over $13 billion. They were largely untouchable even before that. People knew about all manner of abuses, rapes, assaults, coerced sexual favours for access, and on and on. Nobody said a thing. Way back into the 60s people knew if you talked, you were gonna get got.

The other difference now is that publicly shaming these characters have had some minimal(comparatively) effect on their public reputations. It's the "in" thing to do, and lots of people are jumping on the bandwagon. As you pointed out, it has very little to do with actual justice. Many people are simply cashing in...to the detriment of a lot of people who were truly victims.

Another big thing is this: the targets of these allegations aren't accidental either, it's people who aren't connected the way old label heads were. If Mariah Carey had tried going up against Tommy Mottola she's have wound up in a much different place than she is now. On a wider scope, Jefferey Epstein is still floating around free. So is Polanski. Weinstein is dragging it all out and the system is content to bleed him for his ducats instead of any kind of justice, etc etc etc.


In the absence of justice everything has defaulted towards money as a very poor substitute...and when money is your god, all manner of folly is possible.
