Is it just or is the NBA boring??

I think football is boring. A play, stop, huddle, flag, review, time out, a play, commentary, commercial, commentary, a play flag, etc, etc... The total amount of action in a 2 hour football game is about 40 minuets. Basketball at all levels is exciting to me, although the pros less so then in the past. They are sapping all of the excitement out of it. The current rules are virtually no contact. Back in the day, BK (before Kobe) hand checking and hard lay up fouls were the norm. Now if you look at someone the call a personal. Maybe when Glen Oden is in his 5th years a pro, they will bring back the physical old style of playing.

The marketing is the biggest problem I have with the NBA today. I am sick of seeing Lebron and Wade wherever I go, and I wish they would promote some teams other than the Lakers,Heat and Cavs.Because, if you don't have the League Pass, then your stuck watching those same teams every fucking week. Also I would like to see the coaches open the game up more like Phoenix and let the players play. There are too many isolation plays, and that makes the game stagnant if a team or a player is not hot from the field.

....its BORING my man and I'm a sports fanatic....hasn't been the same since Jordan left the game...I used to watch a game from tip off til the final buzzer, not any more....playoffs are better but still don't have the fire from the past...too many teams for sure...diluted the talent....these young guys don't understand the game and don't play D...Jordan, Magic, Bird were all defensive players in their day...Steve Nash would not be on his way to 3 MVP's if he were playing with/against the veterans from the past, the league is just too young...most of the high school kids that came out early weren't dominating on the h.s. level, other than LeBron and KG.....whatever happened to point guards that could handle, feed the big man and control the tempo of a game...most teams today have a 2 guard playing the point position...I get more enjoyment listening to Charles,Kenny and Ernie after the game....

At first I thought it was because my hometown and favorite team
THEE Chicago BULLS were NOT playing championship ball. Then I realized
and remembered way back before our MJ championship era, I still enjoyed
a good game, it did'nt matter who was playing, LA, Boston, Philly, Detroit
New York, Houston whoever. So I did a little research and learned I dont know half these cats in the league like I use to.

I think the NBA has gotten boring because over the years
they have sissified the league, with rules changes like the flagrant foul
hand checking and technical foul bullshit. There is also a severe lack of talent and true skilled players in the league. Most of these dudes came straight outta high school or played one or two years of college ball and are not seasoned or established and only in the league based on potential

For every Dwayne Wade you have a Marko Garbage oops I mean Jaric

Everyone has some valid arguments.

Even though I grew up in the 80's, I still feel that from 89 until the mid to late 90's was the best the NBA had been. There was everything. heated rivalries, scoring, defense and palyers you could love and or hate.

I don't feel there was ever such great comraderie, but teams were together longer. Everything is pussyfied now. Coaches liek one another. Players appear to like each other too much that they have these chummy chummy meetings at the court right after the game.

There seems to be a lack of overall passion for winning in the league. That is why I am glad Wade called out Lebron and dissd Dirk. Someone has to say something. Maybe that is a little Riley in him. Now, I am not saying these guys an't be friends, but win you lose at least feel bad about it. Look the part or something.

The 80's had no defense like there is now, and I was just never a big fan of the 80's.

Honestly, I can say the today's NBA and NFL is indicative of America. Everyone is throwing allt hat bullshit about family values and blah blah blah. It is like lip service. One thing I can say for those crazy ass Euros and is they give a fuck about soccer. There is a lot of passion with them. There is also a lot of racism, but it just seems like the sport means something to the fans and the players.

So family values is bullshit? What the fuck? Passion doesn't have to evoke hate homie. Like I have always said, Pros make to much damn money. College B-ball players have way more passion because at the end of the day they really have love for the game. I don't know what it is but it just seem like cats that aren't getting paid the big bucks go the hardest. When I step on the court, I go hard because I just love the game of basketball. I cherish my moments on the court because its not a given that I will be able to play tomorrow. I might be at work. lol

YES!! I too feel the NBA has become boring. I don't necessarily think it is due to lack of hunger. These are my thoughts on this.

1. Commish Sterns revamped NBA is based upon color. The color is GREEN!
Corporate sponsors and the majority of social classes don't want to see thugery on the court. They bring their clients or children to see ball games and not tatted up thousandaires fighting each other.

2. The rules have changed to benefit our Euro, south american and american white players. Because the majority of Black players are physically superior than their white counterparts these rules had to be put in place to create some more Larry Birds. Shit there is no way Dirk, Nash, Gasol, or any of the rest could score if it wasn't for these rule changes they would be broadcasting by now.

3. Because of the Rule changes skilled players can now benefit. Ever realized how many bricks get thrown up in the game or guys who can't run a designed play to save their life. Players who learned the fundamentals are benefiting from the rules tremendously.

4. The NBA has reduced the amount of air time we get. TNT's schedule has been reduced becuase of espn. Shit I prefer to watch Kenny, Ernie and Charles. Back in the day I remember I could catch a knicks game on channel 9, Watch the Nut - Rod strickland and Mark jackson play or catch a double header on NBC every sunday.

5. Because of the reduced air time we can't identify with the teams unless we have a sports package or pay to go to the game. Shit I fell asleep watching the Suns play the other day on espn. I was hot that the game was BORRRRRRRRRRRING instead of ballin.

I now know I will have to order the NBA package next year to enjoy my Knicks or just to have a choice. Just My 5 cents.

I hope the people talking about how the nba is soft aren't the same ones who agreed that melo should have got 15 games and kobe should have got a game for that bullshit manu call.

The leauge is soft but it's because the whole country is soft somebody is always crying like a hoe about something.

1. The biggest markets on the East coast all stink.

2. There are too many teams.

3. No rivalries. Everybody is too damn friendly with everybody.

4. No contact/rough fouls. See above.

CO-SIGN!!

yea..I gotta admit..I'm not into ball as I was when I was younger. There's a lack of rivalries. There's too many touch fouls. I miss the contact. Charles Oakley would foul out every game in today's game. I miss NBA on NBC on Sundays.. The Christmas games...Only thing that still gets me going is the playoffs.

the nba is "SHIT"....if they can make a 2-3 time mvp out of a bench warmer like nash that says it all. kevin johnson could take a game completely over and kept nash's ass on the bench. real ballers like barkley, domonique, andrew toney, sidney moncief and others oughta be immortalized. i barely watch any games until the end of the playoffs. the league is soft-dilluted with too many teams and suspect talent like that reddick boy from duke that they wanted to be a star. nash is ok..but a league mvp....get real..cyo league maybe??????????

just you..

exactly. the game is better than ever. more exciting than ever.

what is boring is some of the announcers especially the local broadcasts of games. former players who got the jobs just to hang around the game and dont bring any insight, information or color to the games. those guys make watching the game on tv dull as fuck. they are sleep walking half the time.

games on nbc and tnt are better. but local broadcast of games are garbage.

try watching the games with the VOLUME DOWN and some music on. it will be a totally different experience.

or get out the house and go see a game LIVE, much better than that tv shit. and the sistas that go to nba games are PHAT, PHAT, PHAT!!! LOL you can meet a lot of bitches at games and do some business networking if that is your thing.

I've been watching college b-ball since 92-93. The season is shorter so the games are more intense every game counts. Better rivalries. more STRATEGY. College is the way to go if your a true ballaholic. The nba is usually one dude throwing up a ton of shots there are some dudes I'll watch mello, agent 0, AI, Kobe, vince, d wade, but it's not a definite. Right now if Kevin Durant is playing I'm watching duke vs carolina I'm there. You get too see some dudes that are hungry to play ball.

The Answer Is...he Doesnt. Dave Bing, james Worthy Pete Maravich, Billy Cunningham, Isaiah Thomas, kevin Mchale, rick Barry, Elgin Baylor, john Havilcheck, Clyde Drexler, Elvin Hayes, george Gervin, oscar Robertson, john Stockton, robert Parish, walt Frazier And Tons Of Other 'real Superstars' Never One A Single Mvp..and This Simp Wins Two........get Real!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Know That These Discussions Are Subjective And Opinion Shit, But I'll Fight On This Cause It Is No Question That The League Is Weeker Than In Its Heyday.

I agree the NBA keeps showing the same players and teams. I don't like watching Wade play, the Heat play, or the Cavs play then that means I can't even watch a game on ESPN all season. Plus too many fake NBA players who don't have a personality. That's why I like guys like Arenas and Shaq they speak their mind like Barkley does. I'm a Wizards and Magic fan. I watch every Wizards game unless I have plans and watch any Magic game on tv.

Also the refs are bad and alter the rules for guys like Shaq and Wade.

so is that an indictment of steve nash's talent level, or is that an indication of the talent level of the players steve nash is competing against?

i would argue the latter over the former.

and for the record, the kangaroo kid DID win an MVP. in the ABA. just like doc, who won THREE CONSECUTIVE MVPs in the ABA.

i agree with you, the league is TREMENDOUSLY weaker in terms of talent and skills. but that is not what the OP asked. the subject of the thread was NOT is the NBA weaker, it was is the NBA boring.

The NBA is boring although it has been picking up the last few seasons

About 5-6 years ago, the NBA was absolutely UNWATCHABLE to me, that's why they put that age rule in place because too many high school kids were coming in and playing off POTENTIAL rather than actual SKILL

If it ain't the Rockets playing, I usually don't even watch the game and don't even get me started on the Spurs

They're the most boring team in the league yet they're on TV all the damn time

When the playoffs come around and during All Star Weekend is when I usually get interested in the NBA again

And I agree that the college game is better right now than the NBA, especially during tournament time

Not to hate on the young dudes, get ya money, but the decline you see in the league is the result of letting too many young players in the game too soon. Which basically turned the league into a developmental league.

Yeah you gonna have exceptions like A.I., Kobe, KG & Lebron, but most of these HS straight into the pros cats or cats that leave college after just a season or two just don't have a complete game. That along with the bullshit rules changes means the game changes for the worse.

That and the fact that the goals of athletes have changed over the years. Again, this ain't hate on the younger cats but too many players these days just wanna make sportscenter and get paid.

A player thats willing to listen to a coach and sacrifice the spotlight for the good of the team is like finding a $2 bill randomly in the street.

It's why we got our asses handed to us last olympics and it's why the league suffers now.

Of course it's not all on the players though, because if it wasn't for greedy as owners trying to find the next "big thing" there would never have been this influx of underachieving talent.

The league has changed its draft rules though so hopefully in a few years things will be better. This will allow the game to have player rivalries in college again (since guys will have to stay longer) and that will carry over to the league and hopefully improve the game (i.e. Magic vs. Bird).

What's sad is that the People who never won a Tittle would be part of a dynasty today.

Karl Malone and the Jazz
Patrick Ewing and the Knicks
Charles Barkley and the Suns
Reggie Miller and The Pacers

These Guys in thier Prime with thier Teams would have atleast 3 titles today. After they broke Shaq and Kobe up and after the Bulls Dynasty anyone of those teams could be having thier own dynasty today.

It not so much that the NBA is boring, it is the coverage of the NBA that makes it boring. ABC will put you to sleep. The coverage of the game was better when it was on NBC back in the day. Marv Albert with his perverted ass, is a good sportscaster. And dont forget the Magic Johnson and Steve Levy.

The last time I enjoyed watching the NBA was during that strike season. Every game counted so guys really played with passion. Since then I barley even watch the playoffs. The bulls was the shit back in the late 80's to mid 90's and they got me wanting to watch B-ball. Shit I miss the days when the Running Rebles of UNLV would face off with Duke and Arkansas. That was Basketball.

The NBA has picked back up over the last couple of years and has become more exciting with the emergence of stars like Wade, King James, Melo, Nash, & Dirk. I agree, the "superstar calls" have hurt the integrity of the game and put defenders in a bind, but outside of that, the game has been exciting for me lately. Conversely, I live in the heart of college basketball country (North Carolina) and I gotta say college b-ball is OVERRATED as fuck. The talent pool for college is shit compared to what it was in the 90s and games are BORING as hell in the regular season. Im not buying the notion that college b ball players "play harder cuz they work for free". Thats some shit a white man came up with. :smh: If you think Greg Paulus plays harder than Dwayne Wade does on a night to night basis, I dont know what to say to you. I'll give you March Madness being fun & exciting (even though last year's Final Four was one of the least watched & WORST ones ever).

the nba is boring...and the clips of barkley reminded me of exactly how boring. nash is more suitable to to the liking of todays bland game. todays players only desire seems to be to get to the rim and dunk.or...shoot 3s. they cant even shoot free throws. nash is a good/not great player and not deserving of two mvp awards..plain and simple. certainly kobe, lebron, iverson, carmello and a host of others were more deserving of the accolade, given the precedent set by the previous winners. the mvp should be reserved for the best player(s) and if i were picking a team , he would not be among the top 20 that i would select first.if nash is a superstar of the magnitude of those aforementioned icons...then the league is in fact boring and in my opinion woefully lacking in watchabilty quotient.

Overall NBA talent is higher now than it was back then, when coupled with the fact that players are much bigger now than then.

Do you actually watch NBA games? The league is not as good as it was back then because there is so much marginal talent now, its watering the game down. Guys are coming into the league not knowing fundamental skills, not knowing how to run an offense, play defense (huge problem), and not knowing how to play within a team setting (another huge problem).

Players back then were smarter and had a much better grasp of these concepts. Now, guys just want to go one on one or jack FGA after FGA to get on sportscenter.

Nobody said:
There's less effort because these guys are too good.

 That statement could not be any further from the truth considering the fact that a 40 year old Michael Jordan came back and dropp 20+ ppg. Just imagine what he would be doing in this watered down league if he were in his prime.

How many current players in the NBA will be called a LEGEND after they retire? Only Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan... Maybe Jason Kidd (because of his versatility) and potentially Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. That's it.

two words for why the NBA sucks

David Stern

he has totally redesigned the game we all grew up watching for this soft bullshit and no one is interested

Teams arent tight cuz most are padded with softies. You arent punished going to the hole like back in the day when only a man dared come in the paint with fancy shit. These dudes aint Earl The Pearl or Moses or DR J. These dudes are watered down pretty boy faggots. They are 2 steps from being Cranrab's favorite Eurobitches.

Adversity made the Pistons, Lakers, Celtics and Bulls good teams. Not to mention real coaches in real organizations. That was when even superstars didnt cry like faggots over bullshit.

David Stern kidnapped the NBA.

 I agree about "Dictator" Stern. But the guy is a business man trying to sell a product to the world. He's generated tons of revenue but at the same time he's made the game a lot worse.

I'm not even going to talk about the Euro influx. If Toronto didnt have CB, Terrence Ford, or Morris Peterson, I'd swear that their real name was the Real Madrid Raptors :smh:

I was going to say that the real problem with the NBA is
the coverage and how the announcers try to take over

btw, I hate "Reality TV" shows. With a passion

Already had a commentator-less game. It was on NBA TV during the summer league last year down there in Orlando. It was different but its a lot better than listening to those homerific announcing crews.

Joel Meyers and Stu Lantz being at the top of the list. :smh:
