In case you missed it

Anyone watch UFC 70 - NATIONS COLLIDE on Spike TV last night (Saturday, April 21st)?

What the fuck was up with CRO COP getting his head damn near kicked off in the 1st round? That shit was wild. I was stunned (minutes prior Couture had noted he was picking Gonzaga to pull off the upset too). Damn. That shit was wild.

Check the Youtube-type spots for that shit, fam' or tune into the repeat broadcast Monday, April 23rd on Spike. It's the main event, and damn Mirko's RIGHT LEG looked fucked up when he got KTFO'd and fell awkwardly on it.

Training with Georges St-Pierre
By Serene Thio

Georges St-Pierre answers questions during his seminar at Mississauga's Kombat Arts Training Academy.

Sympatico / MSN's mixed martial arts columnist Serene Thio had the rare opportunity to train with Georges St-Pierre and she wrote about her experience. Click here ( http://sports.sympatico.msn.ca/UFC/gallery-GSP-070503 ) to view a photo gallery from this event.

The training space at Mississauga’s Kombat Arts Training Academy was filled for a Sunday training seminar with Canadian UFC icon Georges St-Pierre. The event attracted approximately 100 participants (including myself) and 90 spectators.

The seminar began at 11am that morning. Georges St-Pierre was introduced and we began the day with some warm-ups before he proceeded to take us through a few drills.

11:15am – We start with some Thai Boxing drills. The moves are nothing new and fairly basic to start things off, but practising these drills without shin guards and hand wraps was relatively foreign to me. Georges tells us to go light and take it easy - unfortunately, my training partner is used to training hard while padded up.

11:18am – My shins and forearms are bruised, but I’m pretty determined to complete the drill until Georges calls time.

11:30am - Georges tells us he has “something special” for us. Everyone is excited. “Special” turns out to be a few drills that really kicked the hell out of us.

“Something special” turns out to be these scary wheel-barrow drills. Starting face down with your arms in front of you, your partner picks your feet up and you drag yourself as far as you can go, then you raise yourself into a push-up position, legs elevated with the aid of your partner and start with one push-up. Sounds harmless enough – except then you have to repeat the steps, ending with two push-ups, then three, and you keep going until you hit 10. Then, you’re supposed to turn around and do it again. I feel a little sheepish that I can’t make it all the way through, but then I notice that there are several other people who were unable to complete this tough exercise.

After that brutal routine I get a little scared the next time he tells us he has “something special” for us. This time, he leads us through partnered chest presses and push-ups. Just as tough as the previous drill, but I manage to complete the routine this time.

11:50am – We work on more stand-up exercises. This time, he explains another way to use the elbow in a fight. He impresses on us that the elbow isn’t just used for a knockout, but to faze your opponent a little. He tells us not to drive the elbow, but to clip your opponents cheek like a knife – just to break a little skin. Sweet, I like that.

1:15pm – We break for a half hour lunch. It’s too short a break to go anywhere, so the better-prepared people dig into their pasta salads and sandwiches, while I snack on some cashews and re-hydrate myself.

1:50pm – We get back to the training with more ground work.

We learn some take down techniques and defences while up against a wall. The audience is enthralled as Georges explains the techniques to us, drawing from his experiences in the Octagon. To put it succinctly, it was cool.

He is very thorough with the details, focusing particularly on the footwork involved. He demonstrates and stresses the importance of the footwork like it’s a dance. Georges clearly likes to dance; He uses the dance analogy a few more times during the seminar. I know the guys are going to groan over what I’m about to say, but he’s adorable. Oh, and ladies? He is ten times hotter in person than he is on TV.

We do a few drills from the clinch, one resulting in kneeing your opponent in the face. I get a little overzealous and accidentally almost connect my knee with my partner’s face. Luckily for both of us, he has quick reflexes and blocks the knee. I have some difficulty with the move because my arms are a little shorter and my partner is a fairly thick guy, so I get a little “one-on-one with GSP, who shows me how to work the move to accommodate my shorter limbs and control a larger opponent.

3:15pm – It’s about time to wrap up the seminar, but you can sense that Georges is really involved in showing us more technique. Someone reminds him that he has a flight to catch, so he quickly gathers everyone around and offers to answer a couple of questions.

The first thing everyone wants to know is who he’s fighting next. He is unable to confirm, but promises us that he won’t make the same mistake he made in preparing for his fight with Matt Serra. You can tell it doesn’t matter to any of the participants there that he had lost his title to Serra; We all know he’s still an amazing fighter. He tells us that when you’re a champ at age 25, with everyone telling you you’re the best, you start to let it get to your head. You start to believe you are the best and take that for granted.

Going into the fight, he felt stiff with the knowledge that he hadn’t prepared himself for the fight, that he hadn’t done his research, and that just maybe, he had underestimated Matt Serra. On fight night, while waiting in his locker room, St-Pierre got the call that his fight would be next. The attendant yelled, “Georges St-Pierre, are you ready?” As he nodded and replied to the positive, he realized with some panic that he was not, in fact, ready. That realization riddled him as he entered the octagon. He felt stiff, and nervous, knowing that Matt Serra had trained as he had never trained before, and would have done all his research stepping into The Octagon. As we now know, Georges was right.

He also says he learns much more from losing than winning. He has no attitude, but a lot of pride. He is a good and gracious loser, as all his fans already know – you can see the respect and admiration in the eyes of the seminar attendees – but he says that losing just eats him up inside.

St-Pierre clearly regrets not having been as prepared as he could have been, and with such conviction, assured us that he would never underestimate his opponent again – that the next time he stepped into the Octagon, it would be different. There was a slight pause before the entire gym erupted in applause. We know the next time he steps into The Octagon, whoever stands to face him had better be ready.

Also ... for the TUF (The Ultimate Fighter - season 5) fans ... keep an eye out for SPIKE TV in the coming few weekends. They're bound to have one of their mini-marathons for the series thus far, if they haven't already. They're about 7 episodes into the current season (Lightweights - 155lb division - Jens Pulver / BJ Penn as coaches) having started the current season the first week in April.

Thanks for the Miranda/Pavlik fight, bro. I caught 3/4's of it the other night ... and enjoyed it. Gonna go back and watch the beginning.

As for JACKSON/LIDDELL this upcoming Saturday here ... I'm with you. I'm thinking Rampage will have Chuck's number again. He's a strong dude. Fun watching him this past week on UFC ALL ACCESS training in Big Bear, CA and hanging around with his kids + host Rachelle Leah. I could watch her any day of the week, fam'. I'm sure ya'll agree.

Another good fight to keep an eye out for will be KARO P' vs. JOSH B'.

Karo's always fun to watch ... exciting fights in recent memory with the likes of Diego Sanchez, Nick Diaz, and others. His Judo game is no joke.

Burkman's been doing really well since entering the UFC scene after making a good name for himself with tv viewers a few seasons back on The Ultimate Fighter. Good number of wins ...

Yeah, I guess it has officially crossed over into mainstream sports. It's been all over BSPN the past week. With the demise of boxing, I guess they're searching for a new sport to fill the void. Some BSPN talking heads even stated that that UFC has surpassed boxing in popularity, and were debating who would win in a fight between UFC and Pro Boxers. It's about damn time UFC started getting props.

Co-sign. PRIDE / UFC / IFL & any/all divisions/federations of mixed martial arts deserve serious props. Mad respect to 'em all.

" ... The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), of which Ultimate Fighting Championship is the most popular enterprise, has penetrated the defense of the mainstream and applied a choke hold to that golden 18-to-34 male demographic. The UFC's weekly reality show, The Ultimate Fighter, on Spike TV, often eclipses the television ratings of the NBA and baseball playoffs in that target audience. The names of UFC fighters are some of the most popular entries in Internet search engines come fight time. UFC events do bigger pay-per-view numbers than any pro wrestling event or boxing card this side of Mayweather-De La Hoya. (UFC's 2006 PPV revenues were almost $223 million, compared with $177 million for boxing on HBO and $200 million for WWE.)"

EXCELLENT, Johniz. You da man, fam'. Much respect to you and your connections.

The picture quality is so damn crisp. Gotta be HDTV. I watched the Liddell/Jackson fight. And just now I'm watching the Belcher/Salmon fight and damn it's CLEAR. The file is 4:22 in length, but just over 100MB for an .AVI. I'm still baffled. Great quality, lol.

Any luck with the following fights' links?

4 - James Irvin vs Thiago Silva
5 - Chris Leben vs Kalib Starnes
8 - Josh Burkman vs Karo Parisyan

Always fun to watch all those cats ... The Sandman, The People's Warrior, The Heat, and so on.

Johniz,

I've watched the following so far:

- Liddell/Jackson
- Salmon/Belcher
- Martin/Salaverry

- Have the Mediafire file for the Thomas/Stephens fight

- And I'm currently downloading Parisyan/Burkman at the moment (55% loaded).

Thanks so much, man.

Props

J' - anyone post the 2 fights above? Caught some clips of hometown cat Starnes post-fight ... and supposedly Leben/him were considered possibly the fight of the night this past Saturday. Quote of the week was him mentioning being stunned for about 20 seconds because Leben "hit me in my liver" on a great shot, lol.
