I was reading this yahoo.com article and came across this. I may have been living under a rock but how in the entire fuck does that happen in the US of A? How did your non-reading ass graduate?

The Alias star's mom also went on to earn her graduate degree after the future actor was born and taught remedial reading at West Virginia State. ("She had a lot of kids who had traveled through the public school system in West Virginia and were in college but were also illiterate," Garner said.)

Fam, I got stories of DAYS.

Ages 18 and up that can’t read or write, but are in college. I’m not talking about community colleges or for-profit schools either. Four-year universities has this problem as well.

And don’t get me started on the trauma many students come into school with that range from abuse, rape, PTSD, drug addicts, murder convictions, and so forth.

I’ve had 3 students that have committed suicide and several others that attempted.

Simply teaching a mofo how to read, write, and do math is the least of our troubles. I swear I have thrawted potential school shooters on multiple occasions.

Social promotion... if the public schools can't funnel you directly into the prison pipeline for youthful misjudgment or disruptive behavior, they'll just pass you along. It's the No Child Left Behind bullshit, schools get funding based on performance metrics like standardized test scores and graduation rates, so in many cases you have teachers passing kids who should have flunked and in the worst case scenarios altering test scores just to keep their funding intact.

Also, teachers are trying to keep their jobs because they are also judged on those same metrics.

Our education needs help big time. And the lower the income area, the worse it gets.

Where do you put students that shouldn’t be passed along and how long do you hold them back?

I hear what you are saying, but thats not the real reason. The real reason is because education is a business. Most our meetings at the university are about budgets, cutting them and increasing income. Most schools have virtually thrown admission standards out of the window.

Damn shape. Foreign students are going to be the leaders of the world going forward.
Something has to be done about the US family structure! It all starts at home.
All these young girls are getting raped. Boys do not know their father. It is sickening.

now I’m sure we’ve all heard of athletes that are illiterate that attend college. That makes sense obviously. You bringing in millions to the school so they’ll carry u thru. But how does an average mofo get into college being illiterate???

All colleges aren’t the same for acceptancing students. Also, some only requires them to take an entrance exam which is multiple choice.

A retarted monkey can select all C answers and it may be enough for them to pass into school. Those entrance exams randomize the answers so it’s possible the the randomization can led to enough C answers (or other letters) being enough to get in.

That seems a bit hyperbolic given that there is still a great deal of cache to being a University that's tough to get into. Wasn't that the whole premise of the Varisty Blues scandal, the rich and famous paying out to nose to get their kids into schools where they otherwise wouldn't qualify. I can see where admission standards may be diving at JuCo's and online diploma mills, but even State Universities which are supposed to be the affordable option seem to use their admission/rejection rates as a measure of quality. And it doesn't help that kids look better on paper than they do in reality due to grade inflation/tampering in K-12.

I know you weren’t asking me, but
A lot of schools need students, so they can use tuition to stay open
They lower standards and accept anyone
There is a school in Raleigh that makes you get a criminal background check when you apply to the school. It is that bad

Far fewer than 100 schools out of 5000 have selective admission. If I remember right, about 50 take less then 20% of the applicants and another 50 take less than half.

It's not just small schools but major state colleges. I've had people work for me from Michigan State, University of Arizona and Syracuse who couldn't read simple codes and regulations. A peer of mine showed me a small press release that a girl with a masters from Rutgers wrote, there were at least 20 red corrections on 1 page.

We need to figure out what is the purpose of education. Is it for a knowledgeable society with critical thinking skills or is it too get a good job. It's stupid the amount of jobs today that require a college education. Employers are using the diploma as a reference that you come from a certain class of people. College is definitely a business. I've moved to the point in which I think I think college should be free for all smart people.

Wow. I had no idea. That’s incredibly sad. I’m Fayetteville which is the next town over and I can definitely see that being a thing. Lol

One of my colleagues just had an incident where a student's sister tried to kill her and her brother. Cops and everything were called.

Man, y'all are seeing there is a totally different dynamic with remote teaching. Most of the time these students come to school and get away from their home environment.

Now, they are at home in their elements. And a lot of that shit isn't pretty. :smh:

This is a correspondence between myself and one of my workers, who is in his "second year of school". Damn shame.....

So I understand that you have a new job, and that is fine. But as a part-time associate, your are obligated to have an availability to work at least 1 weekend day. This is what you agreed to upon your hiring, and your recent discussion with Angie. As of now, your current work schedule does not align with your new job. If fulfilling your scheduled weekend obligation is something you absolutely cannot do, then you have to decide what is best for you. We cannot afford to schedule you for weekend shifts and you continuously call off. All part-time associates are required to work a weekend shift, and you are no acception. If you have any more questions, please call and speak with me, as I will be your point of contact regarding this situation. Thank you, and have a good weekend!

Interesting. Doesn't surprise me though. Colleges are really struggling. Most colleges are giving discounts to most students so as not to lose the money. Some are closing down. They've had to lower their standards big time to compete. Obviously not the giant universities or high end private schools, but everyone else is struggling hard.

You think it's most of the time? Is home life really that bad for most people? If so, damn. That is messed up.

I can't keep up with all of this in the media though. When people go to school, they need safe places and bullying is a problem. They stay home and they need safe places from home(msm stayed running stories on this). It's as if no matter what situation there is a problem and a major 'thing' that needs to be fixed. You got one group of people about to slit their wrist if they stay home and another if they have to go to class. Jesus christ. Just hybrid this shit and be done.

As for the standards, it seems to be another byproduct of our 'everyone gets a trophy' society. Let me pull up my grandpa pants and talk about how back in my day we had cats with beards in the 6th grade because teachers weren't afraid to flunk people. Nowadays, people getting passed just so they don't get embarrassed. :smh:

Fam, home life for a lot of these adults are tragic as fuck. Ask any educator that actually cares about their students well-being. Hell, ask any supervisor/boss that cares about their employees and takes the time to ask questions.

At the school I teach at, lets say I have 20 students. I wouldn’t be far off if I said 15 came from extreme circumstances in life. This isn’t always the case, but most of the time.

Hell, this forum alone, many of the members come from from traumatic backgrounds or had some type of difficult experience that is very personal to them. They are just not open about it.

It’s one thing I have learned about people being a teacher is that no one is above the things life can throws at you.

I have sat with men and women for hours after class listening to them tell me about all their problems. I’m listening to women tell be how their boyfriend/husbands best them. Or literally have that crazy mofo sit outside in the parking lot to make sure she is going to class. Or a student calling out sick for weeks on end because she still got he boyfriends shoe stuck up her ass.

Now that we got remote learning going on, I’ve had many students have to rush off the sessions due to circumstances. Many students are impoverished and are ashamed to be seen on camera because of their house/apartment.

The reality of education is everyone is not meant to succeed in school. But it does give chances when there might not be any for these people. I used to try and save all my students, now I don’t.

I remember my senior year in English class where EVERYBODY that sat around me cheated off my paper. Doing peer reviews of papers officially let me know they were all illeterate in some way. Hell, they even cheated on open book tests  .

Me too. My agency's leadership courses stress Colin Powell's leadership philosophy. One thing Colin said was leadership is problem solving, when people no longer bring you their personal problems, they no longer think of you as a leader. I used to know everything that was going on in my people's lives. Then we got a bunch of new young guys. I'm talking about young white men, 25 - 35 years old, most from middle-class backgrounds. Half with degrees, half without , plenty of veterans. They just had too many problems, too many needs. It was too much. I just stopped caring. I told my friend this, I said "I just don't care anymore".

Later one of the last things I had to do was make sure that everyone's personal information, including family contacts, was updated. I was surprised at how many people listed their parents at different addresses, their parents had divorced.

I think American society has become so exclusionary now that it lacks of sense of community. They were so worried about keeping us out, they hurt their own children.

Unfortunately in nyc in the 90s they decided to do a test run with this thing called regents diplomas In high school. the academic expectation was extra high they made you take a shitload of hard classes in order to graduate.. lot of smart people were dropping out or getting geds cause they couldn’t pass a certain class or subject that fulfilled the academic requirements.. I think it overall fucked up a lot of futures.. than the following decade they pushed the no child left behind.. it was like the 90s kids were guinea Pigs and they said awww man we fucked up let’s erased that and be easier on the new generation.. I swear there’s some type of class action lawsuit that could be done for 90s high school kids from nyc that might been negatively affected by that academic experiment.. all I can remember the most was being in 9th grade and they had these white high school seniors from Nebraska visit my high school and they was talking to us and when they found out our requirements to graduate they were like Jesus we never had to take half these classes.. they were like they didn’t even have to take chemistry or physics and yet they were considered highly intelligent with great gpa.. I was like what kind of fuck shit is going on.. I remember being very vocal about that interaction and going they trying to fuck with the kids of nyc..was the beginning stages of my anti board of Ed mindset

I just want to get this out of the way first, I've met 5 people who graduated from the University of Nebraska. Each one was a fucking idiot. I mean Forest Gump stupid, the type of person the first thing anyone says about them is "that stupid fuck".

lmaoooo... so see you can tell my story is true

I see this all the time because I teach Math at a local university. I try to get students to read word problems in my class and I get crickets! These students do not want to read because they CANNOT read!!! They do not read the syllabus, they do not read/comprehend their curriculum guides! Most of these students are in college because society says that college is the next step after high school but the student does not want to be there. They got pushed through high school.

Standards have to be lowered because the American education system have fucked up the critical thinking aspect of learning.

And don’t believe those giant universities aren’t having the same issues because they are. They just have more available resources to deal with certain things. Plus, as we know, money goes al

Yeah, man. White folks got ISSUES within their house hold. It’s crazy. Black folk as well. We just have a tendency to be less open about it from my experience.

You can’t care too much because you’ll go crazy. I done the best I could for the ones I could help, but some problems and needs are so far beyond what I am willing to handle.

I know this is off topic but...
I remember being taught cursive in elementary school. All of the teachers said that everyone used cursive in the real world. As an adult, I barely see it
Same here Fam!

Sadly a lot of kids today are not learning this craft.

My guess is how will they sign their name on important documents?

Even taxes require a signature provided you're not just doing them online only.
