Idiocracy, Eugenics And Why It Is One Of The Most Elitist & Anti-Social Movies Ever

The movie Idiocracy popped into my mind as I watched one of the two people most likely to be the next president on the United States make a proclamation about his penis' size at a debate this week.

I'm really wondering what this means for the future of American politics...

'Idiocracy' writer: I never expected my movie 'to become a documentary'
By Neetzan Zimmerman
February 24, 2016

The man behind the 2006 cult sci-fi film “Idiocracy” is lamenting that his fictional movie appears to have become reality.

"I never expected #idiocracy to become a documentary,” tweeted screenwriter Etan Cohen in an apparent jab at the 2016 presidential race.

Together with "Beavis & Butt-head" creator Mike Judge, Cohen co-wrote the time-travel comedy. The plot revolves around the misadventures of a man who wakes up in a futuristic America only to discover that everyone around him, including lawmakers and government officials, is an idiot.

"I thought the worst thing that would come true was everyone wearing Crocs,” Cohen told his Twitter followers.

“Idiocracy" star Terry Crews, famous for his role as President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, also used the satirical film to take a shot at the surreal election cycle.

“All y’all need to stop tripping,” Crews tweeted in character. "Chill the F out, ‘Merica.”

If you do a search for "Idiocracy" on BGOL, you'll see nobody was talking about it a year ago and then, starting in September as Trump's candidacy became more and more successful, the movie was suddenly a topic of discussion again.

Just a sample:

Its embarrassing just like Trump supporters interviewed on the streets being read quotes from Hitler and Mussolini, and thinking it was a good thing that Trump said. We are living in the "Idiocracy" that always precedes Fascism!

That is what this cac jerry springer audience "idiocracy society" gets for choosing him as their leader.

We just living during the dawn of Idiocracy.
Can't wait until Trump runs against Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho He gonna def lose when that happens.

These niggas wilding smoove out

#idiocracy

Having not actually watched it in several years, I didn't remember the setup for the movie until reading this article and it's a reference I'm not going to throw out there anymore after taking this into consideration. I think anybody who talks about that movie should read this. The author's points are very solid and I won't think about that movie the same way again.

'Idiocracy' Is One of the Most Elitist and Anti-Social Movies Ever—Why Do Liberals Love Referencing It?
The pro-eugenics 2006 film finds a home with confused liberals who would rather blame bad breeding than structural classism and racism.

Last week the screenwriter for the 2006 satirical science fiction comedy Idiocracy came out and said his film’s nightmare vision of a country run by improperly bred morons had indeed come true:

This was predictably followed by a series of editorials, think pieces and takes that seem to confirm this theory: Trump was a product of an indefinable “dumbing down” of our political environment:

It’s no surprise Cohen’s comments would go viral. They fit neatly into a superficially appealing notion that Trump, and the GOP at large, are animated by toothless rednecks and science-denying idiots. While there certainly are both of those, as well as outright white supremacists, in Trump’s constituency, wielding Idiocracy as a kind of political shorthand for a new, and therefore meaningful, shift in our political climate is both inaccurate and politically toxic for the left.

First of all, there’s the issue of the film’s pro-eugenic premise: The idea that some future world would be populated by dumb people, while inherently smug, isn't necessarily right-wing. What makes the movie reactionary is the reason for this stupidity: that dumb people are breeding too much, a concept steeped in eugenics, one of the nastiest strains of elitism ever invented by humanity. This is the idea that society incentivizes the wrong people—"idiots"—to have more children, and by the laws of “evolution” this results in more idiots and fewer smart people. This is defined in the opening sequence by the pseudoscience of IQ and given a distinctly classist framing:

While the movie is savvy enough to avoid overt racism, it dives head first into gross classism. The problematic breeders all have hillbilly accents and live in trailers, while those whose eggs we presumably want fertilized epitomize WASP-y stereotypes.

The film's legions of defenders call it satire. Well, the overt argument of the film is that good breeding prevents social problems. The so-called satire proceeds from there, presenting the ridiculous consequences of what will happen if we don't rethink how society breeds. Satire isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card for all vulgar and illiberal ideas; it has to be pointed and targeting the powerful, not targeting vague notions of idiocy illustrated by Appalachia accents and trailer parks without consideration for what caused the idiocy in the first place.

The message is cheap and easy and doesn’t require us to meaningfully challenge power, much less ourselves. Instead, we direct our disdain at the pseudo-problem of not being adequately intelligent, as if such a problem operates independent of material factors.

This sentiment is a common thread in left discourse. While nowhere near as reactionary or meanspirited, being smarter than the other guy was a feature of the Jon Stewart era of political comedy. Snark was more important than ideology, hypocrisy the only unforgivable sin and throwing clips together to make right wingers look like morons, rather than people with sinister politics, was the point of "The Daily Show" fan base's political enterprise.

This was also seen in the left’s mockery of the Tea Party, often painted as illiterate boobs, despite the fact that those identifying as Tea Party members have, on average, higher income and education levels than the population in general. While education certainly doesn’t equate to intelligence, to say nothing of worldliness or wisdom, the fact that the Tea Party—and Trump’s voting base—are actually more educated than the general voting base affirms, once again, the problem isn’t "intelligence" but rather toxic ideology that operates independent of people’s IQ. As Michael Tracy notes, Trump actually won voters with post-graduate degrees in the state of Massachusetts, the "crown jewel of American higher education." How many Nazis had anthropology or psychology degrees? How many were renowned physicists and musicians? Stupidity is not what created the rise of Trump, a deliberate poisoning of the discourse by the wealthy over decades combined with the left’s inability offer a clear class-based alternative has.

Smugness and irony are the intellectual run-off of a left incapable or unwilling to speak clearly in the language of class and class conflict. When we can’t, or won’t, direct our ire at those responsible for the vast majority of the world’s problems, namely the superwealthy and the capitalist system that props them up, we are left with nowhere to aim. Instead, we highlight the problem—in this case political ignorance—without addressing its primary culprit: the consolidation of media into large corporations, a PR-fueled think tank industry fed by billionaires designed to promote toxic right-wing canards, a sprawling Islamophobia industry, a corrupt campaign financing system, and a decades-long corporate assault on K-12 and postsecondary education.

The idea that a corrosive intellectual and political climate (for which Trump is the current avatar) can be chalked up to too many dumb people having kids or some vague, guiltless notion of "dumbing down", rather than deliberate policy directives of the wealthy and their far-right media machinery - to say nothing of the inability of the left to adequately combat this machinery - is one of the more reductionist and politically useless ideas to populate our discourse. We are not living in an idiocracy, we are living in an oligarchy, for which political stupidity is one of many symptoms caused by the malignant cancer of inequality and runaway capitalism.

I downloaded this film years ago, ...are you some hipster stuff with this flick? It's just a satirical film, no biggie.

1st search further back we discussed this movie there's a 6 page thread on it.
2nd. trying to turn it into a class issue about ideology and ignoring that a large base of trumps supporters are in fact in trailer parks and hate black people is crazy.
3rd it's idiocracy not because of trump, or the people but mainly the media. the media is the vehicle that drove us off this cliff. When Trump announced they could have squashed him like a bug and ended his campaign before it started but instead they fed into him in order to get ratings. They covered him with the rest of the legit candidates. They didn't snatch his nuts from under him and now it's too late. They thought his bigoted remarks were refreshing and charming and made sure he was a central figure in everyone's home because they made sure to let us know every time he said anything.

The media is idiocracy.

It is satirical, but the point of movie is the dumbing down of society and the continued effects of that being an extremely dumb population. It's simple science. If you pour clean water on a plant it grows healthy as it should, but if you pour toxic water on that same plant the results are drastically different

Yeah, I know, I saw the film, thanks for the comment, tho. I made the comment because Art Vandelay acts like this film is new to BGOL, & it's not, this film has been well established cult film for years.

I know Idiocracy is not new to BGOL. The movie is around ten years old.

But if you do the search I described in the second sentence of this post, you'll see it was last discussed here in March 2015 and then wasn't mentioned at all for half a year. In September, suddenly it starts getting mentioned again, always with reference to Trump.

As the article demonstrates, this isn't a BGOL thing. There's been a resurgence of discussion of this film with regard to the presidential election.

I downloaded this film years ago, ...are you some hipster stuff with this flick? It's just a satirical film, no biggie.

I'm not sure if you actually read the article but the author addresses this point.

"Satire isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card for all vulgar and illiberal ideas; it has to be pointed and targeting the powerful, not targeting vague notions of idiocy illustrated by Appalachia accents and trailer parks without consideration for what caused the idiocy in the first place."

You could make "satire" about lynching people, raping people, any vile belief or action. Take "Birth of a Nation," for example. Just because something is satirical doesn't mean it is harmless or inconsequential.

It is satirical, but the point of movie is the dumbing down of society and the continued effects of that being an extremely dumb population. It's simple science. If you pour clean water on a plant it grows healthy as it should, but if you pour toxic water on that same plant the results are drastically different

There's nothing scientific about claiming that low income people having more children will produce a dumber population. There are many factors that have made this country what it is, such as those mentioned in the article and highlighted in big bold red font; asserting that certain people having children will make the country dumber has zero scientific basis.

On the first point, as I clarified in my response to World B Free, I was not posting under the impression that this movie had never been discussed here.

On the second, nobody is saying to ignore that Trump has a large base of ignorant supporters. But sheer ignorance doesn't solely or even primarily explain his appeal, as the article does a good job of explaining.

On the third, the media has definitely fed into the Trump phenomenon but it's not the job of the media to determine who is or is not a legit candidate and you are wildly inflating its role in his rise-- He was a frontrunner for the nomination in 2011 with nowhere near this level of coverage. The media is idiotic and irresponsible, sure, but this is so much deeper than that.

Win the super poor reproduce at high numbers, especially when they can't even take care of the kids they have the problem is they are over extending a pool of resources that isn't there, in a poorly constructed education system with a really high student to teacher ratio. They arent guaranteeing their failure, but they are making it really hard to succeed.

It's been said, by me and many others, that poor people don't do shit but fuck. I'm bored let's fuck. They don't use protection and a kid is born. The man either doesn't have a job or isn't involved in the kids life and now you have a single mother. Her low self esteem leads her to make another poor choice which is just trying to find a guy so she won't be lonely - and usually a poor quality one. They don't use protection and another kid is born and the guy leaves because he wasn't quality in the first place.

The single mother now has two kids that she can't take care of by two guys who are no longer there and she struggles to find adequate work, adequate housing, she doesn't have time to worry about adequate schooling. Because of the burden of the kids, and/or issues dealing with the guy she loses her job and needs to move to the poorer area where she knows that the schooling is worse, and the negative influences of bad kids, with bad parents, drugs and gangs - but she has to survive.

I'm not making up things here, this is the life of my sister in law. When I asked her why she dated her second childs father in the first place, a guy with tattoos on his face who was abusive and much like a child himself, her and her had low self esteem written all over it. "I've already got a kid with no father. I don't have a lot to offer anybody..."

The science is, in the middle class areas and above water is poured on the children much more plentifully, whereas in the poor neighborhoods water and other resources are hard to find and they are stretched thin by the sheer number of people - think modern-day slaughterhouse. It is a rarity for someone to grow up out of that situation and be A beautiful flower mentally and physically.

You can blame the victims or blame the abusers. It seems you've chosen to totally blame the people caught in a vicious cycle at the bottom and ignore the people keeping them there.

That tendency is why political attacks on so-called welfare queens, food stamp recipients and others have done so well time and time again, distracting the masses from the "increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it" and focusing their contempt on rural overbreeders, immigrants, the single mother and other imaginary enemies. The resources are there-- Our society chooses to prioritize military over education and tax cuts for the rich over food for the poor, including still-developing children.

All I know is this recent election cycle has shown me how much a political education is very necessary.

But I don't want to dismiss it as just idiocy because it's more than that at work here. Though the dummies do contribute to it.

Between these Trump supporters and Clinton have around 80 percent of the black vote, it just seems as if all hope is lost. That's the problem with this 'get out and vote' horseshit. We have more than enough people voting already. We just need those who currently take the time to vote to get more educated about the future.

No it's really not. They decide who you see and who you don't see. There is a thread around here about the difference between airtime for Hillary Vs Bernie. People literally don't see Bernie on the news shows and that's where everyone gets their news. They vote for who they see.

Bernie had a debate the night before a vote on national tv and the following night he killed hillary. That's not a coincidence. MILLIONS of people don't read the newspapers or anything they turn to CNN FOX OR MSNBC that's it.

and if you never see someone on any of those stations but you see someone else that's who you know and vote for that's who you're familiar with

I guarantee you if Fox news didn't play up trump and instead spent all this time focusing on Rubio or Cruz THEY'D be killing trump. If they ignored all of his antics as crackpot instead of getting legit political minds discussing it and some arguing FOR his ideas he would have washed out already

Same with Bernie if anyone actually TALKED about Bernie he'd probably be winnnig

I give black voters a pass man. They don't see Bernie. They don't get to see him. Hes not on TV and I'm not gonna hold black voters to a standard that other voters don't adhere to as well. If Bernie and his ideas were prominent in the places where we digest our news he'd be killing her no doubt.

Actually, people are reproducing themselves into a cycle and the abusers know it and LOVE IT. They've created a perfect system to make people who shouldn't be complacent more complacent. And I think it's known that educated people have fewer children. People who can't afford kids are indeed having the most children. Those who are engaging in family planning tend to have children who do better in school.

That's why Europe is having a problem. Those cacs figured out they were reproducing themselves into the poor house and stopped. The elite have fewer people to take advantage of so they need immigrants.

I hold all voters to the same standard. If they can take the time to vote, they can take the time to know what the fuck they are doing. There are no excuses. What we are seeing with black voters just highlights the problem with American voters in general: The majority are ignorant about politics.

Some valid points, but I still feel an anti-liberal slant. Not that im a liberal, per se, but any slant makes me wary.

Either way, it's probably not the right movie to apply that level of scrutiny to. Mike Judge is not exactly known for subtle political statements in his work.

To that end, I think that an argument is being created on the back of this movie that could have made a better article without doing so. Yeah, a lot of backwoods dummies are a significant part of why we're here, but let's not forget the larger systemic causes. Gotcha.

The rest makes me feel like it could be from a slick ass conservative PAC

The movie definitely made sense of how dumb our society can be or is becoming....
However...
That was the dumbest fucking movie I have ever downloaded.
I deleted that horrible shit immediately after suffering through it.

That's all that needs to happen just being more educated about the process and knowing what your vote means.

There are incumbents in some offices that go unchallenged year after year they don't do anymore for their constituents among other things.

It's amazing how much these politicians are able to get away with.

I wish people would educate themselves like we lived in a direct democracy where your participation or not had real consequences.

There are a lot of assumptions about what people know and they really don't know shit.

"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge"

Upppgrayyyedd! idiocracy is the future of America. There is a social media thread that shows how stupid people are becoming.

I used to think that I was like most everyone else, that the idiots where the minority. The longer I live the more I see that the idiots are indeed the majority, and it is the people who think like me, the intelligent ones who are the minority. This is scary

Yeah, and that's why people who are intelligent conspire to control the masses. I mean, look at the fucking masses. Fuck these creatures. Seriously.

The author taking people's tongue and cheek references to the movie is a fail to begin with. It's like somebody taking to task people's misuse of the word literally when they probably mean figuratively. We know what someone means if they say, " I literally almost died when I saw that spider!" We know they don't seriously didn't think they almost died, the usuage of the word just adds emphasis to their point even if we know it's in correct.

Church:

Stupidity is not what created the rise of Trump, a deliberate poisoning of the discourse by the wealthy over decades combined with the left’s inability offer a clear class-based alternative has.
I know this old sorry... gotta say though you arwnt parsing this out correctly considering the VAST number of wealthy individuals ON THE LEFT. The problem of the left is a conscious. Wanting to sleep at night free of the guilt that moral character brings that "do anything" politricks engenders. Lacking that, the reptilian counter-party on the right will do whatever is possible to hold onto and to flaunt their power and lack of empathy.
