Ice-T Defends Coco After the Internet Comes for Her for Wearing Cornrows

She named her 'do the "Coco Swoop."

Published 10 hours ago

Coco Austin has a new hairdo and it's attracting attention for all the wrong reasons. We're about to embark on a wild ride, so let's unpack, shall we?

Two days ago, Coco debuted a new look on Instagram. Her long, blonde hair had been styled into braids, more specifically cornrows. "I call um Da Coco Swoop," she wrote. Well, while her creative name may be new, nothing else about the cornrows is. Appropriating a style that belongs to Black culture is one thing, but some Christopher Columbus-esque whitewashing of the name of a style that's been around for ages really was the nail in the coffin for Coco. A commenter noted, "Them is corn rows aka lemonade braids try again," signaling that if this hairstyle was going to be named for any one person, it would certainly be Bey and not Coco.

Matters only got worse when her husband, Ice T, came to her defense. In a tweet addressed to Ice, someone wrote, "I blame black men for allowing their white significant other to even remotely think this was ok." Ice's response? "Wrong for what? Braiding her hair?? You sound Dumb." The internet responded swiftly, reminding him that above all, Coco did not invent this hairstyle and shouldn't pretend as such.

Some pointed out that Coco's been wearing similar braided styles since the early 2000s, but that doesn't really help her case at all. Sorry, Coco, but both this hairstyle and its name don't belong to you. As Solange said, some s**t is for us.

Ice fake and soft. I doubt he did any of that shit he said he did. A pimp never falls in love. Pimp or die and never catch feelings for hoes of which she really is. Suspect. Ice used to be nice on wax but that was eons ago. Young folk wouldn't recognize it today. Ice, you played yourself

she said my new braids..where did she rename anything like she did it 1st ...so i`m confused ..then she says she nicknames all her hairstyles...

i dont get it ...lol

but then again if i did that would b suspect ...

T fucked up replying...lol

let me know when the sex tape leak with the dude grabbing her ass....:D

yes.. outrage twitter is the worst twitter.. there's people that think white shouldn't be allowed to wear braids

This is big with younger activists-- A lot of Black Lives Matter organizers would treat this as an affront.

One could argue that her name for her hairstyle is appropriation but some of these people are so extreme in their cultural oversensitivity that they really think it is an outrage that a white woman braided her hair. I say learn to pick your battles. Save your fire for fights that matter and don't discredit yourself by being the boy that cries wolf at the sight of every passing puppy or raccoon.

Hmm... people have problems with that??

It's would be a problem with the younger black activist , especially BLM.

Modern Social Justice activist have taken up and coined a new term "cultural appropriation" believing that anyone borrowing aspects of another culture that you do not belong to is extremely offensive.

The idea being you are playing dress-up in a culture that is not yours.

This might be seen as offensive today

In my humble opinion, as long as you are not trying to be offensive or obviously making a mockery of the culture it just shouldn't be an issue, at all.

All the things were facing, I dont think braids are in the top 100!!!

Who the fuck cares? I recall when African Americans used to mock Africans for those braids. Now it's cultural appropriation. From who? White Americans need to adopt genuine African names and you can them out on that. GTFOH.

ehh it's a chic thing...I promise you dudes ain't looking @ no damn braids tho

Its either fags or women.......no black man gives a fuck.
Social media and this fake outrage I swear mfers so sensitive these days

I'm convinced man this shit be happening to distract and to lessen our outrage on real shit.

I wonder how many of them have permed and extended hair..

She should stand her ground, and even wear a dashiki

Bigger shit than this we let them get away with

Black women wear weaves and get blonde hair

Wanna get mad when they emulate us like the trendsetters we are.
Wanna get mad when they want nothing to do with something considered "black".

We need to make up our mind.

But just like another poster said. Only bitches get riled up over something like this, I'm too busy looking at the ass.
