I Got A Meeting On Friday With Them, They Are Trying To Talk Me Out Of Quitting But I Cant Work Under People Like That.

If they're trying to talk you out of quitting that means that you haven't quit yet, right? Yet you already said that you told them you quit. SO which is it, did you quit or not? :confused:
 
Basically you've MASSIVELY changed things at that job and, trust me, it won't be worth staying there anyway.

But don't walk away. NOTHING is wrong with a "Jena 6" sign just like nothing is wrong with a "Support The Troops", "End Global Warming" or "Go Billikens" sign.

A solid law firm would take this case with little or no out-of-pocket expense to you and you could make a huge statement plus hit them where it hurts.

Regardless, you need to polish up that resume because either now or very soon in the future, you'll be looking to work somewhere else.

In a sense they got U twice,
1. You quit which is what they probably wanted anyway saving them some paper work. They'll just replace you with a white guy and pay him twice of what you where making for less work.
2. You can't collect unemployment benefits because you quit.
If you had continued working there they probably would have made working conditions for you unbearable where you would've eventually quit.
There are 3 subjects of discussion or conversations that I try to stay clear of on the job, which are Politics, Religion, and Race relations. These subjects stir up emotional responses that lead to very heated debates and sometimes violent outcomes.
There are other possible remedies that you may pursue but thats pending on further information on that sign of yours.

I understand the racial climate in St. Louis. That's why I escaped. But go and get your money. You got bills to pay and just allow them to fire you. That way, you have the upper hand. Or, just take the sign down and get your money. Save your money and start your own business. You have name it "Jena 6 needs to be free, Inc." or something. But stack until you are in a position of strength.

Or, put the sign up, get fired, and sue for wrongful termination- especially if there's nothing in the employee handbook that they can refer to in court that prohibits the kind of signs that your "Jena 6" is crafted. Or, if you can prove via evidence that your sign is just like other signs that are hanged in the workplace but is being singled out due to discriminatory means.

In short, if folks have other signs of a political nature hanging in the workplace then you may have a case. But if all the other signs are merely business-oriented, you may be in violation of a rule within the employee handbook and your termination may not even be subjected to unemployment benefits.


Wow! I was just in The St.Louis area (Well the O'Fallon area), and I thought it was pretty cool. I didn't see that many blacks, even at the Walmart.:confused: Had a chance to go to a nice Jazz Club in the downtown St.Louis area.:yes:

Department (if your company has one) and let them know you will not accept
their decision lying down

good advice. make no mistake i am not out of line. my job is still there if i want it. their actions were ignorant and the mood that it set is a difficult one to get past. its one of those ugly situations. of course the handbook doesnt say anything about political messages on your desk, as i stated earlier my supervisor has a political satire calender on her desk. anyway this is gonna get ugly before it gets pretty but i wouldnt have even mentioned quitting if i didnt have money coming in from other places. and i admit politics should not be handled at work but there is a right and a wrong way to do everything. oh and i most def know to them im just another nigga easily replaceable. i already know all of that.

If you don't have time to see beyond your own self interests and stand for something, that says a lot about your character or the lack thereof. Get cha money but don't blame real men for standing up instead of bending over for "massa." Shuffle on.

stlredbird - The meeting Friday serves two purposes. They had to consult their legal team to see how much trouble this could cause them. They are probably going to try to offer you your job back so they will have a legal leg to stand on. They will say some shit like "we wanted to give the situation time to cool off; everyone was emotional. Let's be rational now." They also want to see what you are going to do. If you play company man, they'll give you your job back and fire you in a few months for something else. At this point, you have two options; start over and hunt for a new job or stay until you find a new job. If you start over, you can sue. There is no guarantee that you will win, especially if you have previous discipline actions. The odds are against you. IF you go back, you can't sue but you can use the time to get a new job if you have enough in savings to float you for a little while.

Good advice.... I always say... just like they don't wanna hear what you have to say.... you don't wanna hear what they have to say....That basic strategy keeps everybody all in the same playing field.

Perhaps its the first time some of us have heard it said... but its the truth and everybody needs to keep that in mind...

Also, if you quit or were fired... you can't get unemployment...

And think about the message you're sending to your supervisor. You're a militant... while that's good for your personal self esteem... it might not be so good for your wallet...

also.. in case you didn't know... we "all" have certain causes we feel particulariy "passionate" about. While you think everybody should listen to you, do you wanna listen to the office "gay" worker too... or how about the single mommy... they got causes they are equally passionate about as well... I'm sure they would love to spend "hours" talking to you about it...

But if you're like me, I don't like being taken "hostage" at work by someone who wants to me to listen to there political platform.

Take the high road... you don't talk about your personal concerns, and neither should they... and if they do... just walk away... they will understand.... thats how "grown folk" behave at work.

And if he did leave his job (which I seriously doubt) based on a legal case that requires a legal solution not even involving him personally, I doubt seriously his J-O-B will be worth fighting over. Besides, he already said he quit. A diary would be good for the next gig.

Son, you are niave if you think they want to keep you around. If you get the chance DO NOT QUIT! KEEP YOUR JOB! You have no case - not with the EEOC, ACLU NAACP, CNN or any other alphabet. No attorney will take your case and your boss can fire you for any reason or no reason at all. Even if you have been a boot licker, they will stuff your file with all kinds of lies and no co-worker will testify for you.

If they ask you to remove the sign - do so and then use the company grievance system while documenting EVERYTHING FORWARD. Unless you record them saying I'm firing you for a discriminatory reason - you lose! Buy a recorder and get them to say you're fired because ... or comply. As a matter of fact, don't go to that meeting alone. They are going to FIRE you that day.
 
If you quit then they can drive off any black man. Keep working and keep your sign up. If they fire you then you can sue and also collect unemployment which that company would have to pay you. If you quit you forfiet everything. Whitey wins.
 
Quitting is a dumb move unless you don't care about the job. Better to take a sick day and chill out. You have no free speech rights on your job, they can choose what to display at their company. If you want to show support for Jena 6, put your sign in your yard.
