Work is not about friendship or poltical idealogy...
Its about gettin paid.
My personal ideas and beliefs are not going to be conducive to everybody I work with...nor will there ideas or beliefs be the same as mine...
For example,
I don't wanna hear you talkin about your "gay" boyfriend and how much you love your relationship,
I don't wanna hear about how tough your life is because you're a single parent because you hate the babies daddy and no one will help you with him,
I don't wanna hear how much you love your "gun" collection and your fascination with the latest gun that can wipe out 100 people in less than a minute.
I don't wanna hear about how much you love the "Lord" and thats the reason why you work here.
I don't wanna hear about how much you think about the world is going to hell because of man made contamination of the environment,
I don't wanna hear about how you think that people shouldn't eat meat because it causes cancer....and that PETA is right...
anyway... you get my drift...
Work is about makin money so you can get even more credit for my SUV, pay off that student loan and acquire even more debt because I like women..

I understand the racial climate in St. Louis. That's why I escaped. But go and get your money. You got bills to pay and just allow them to fire you. That way, you have the upper hand. Or, just take the sign down and get your money. Save your money and start your own business. You have name it "Jena 6 needs to be free, Inc." or something. But stack until you are in a position of strength.
Or, put the sign up, get fired, and sue for wrongful termination- especially if there's nothing in the employee handbook that they can refer to in court that prohibits the kind of signs that your "Jena 6" is crafted. Or, if you can prove via evidence that your sign is just like other signs that are hanged in the workplace but is being singled out due to discriminatory means.
In short, if folks have other signs of a political nature hanging in the workplace then you may have a case. But if all the other signs are merely business-oriented, you may be in violation of a rule within the employee handbook and your termination may not even be subjected to unemployment benefits.

1. Worn a black ribbon... Like every "cause" in America there is a color ribbon for it. It symbalizes the "cause", your concern, and in cases where nobody has caught on to the "cause" you know someone is gonna stop and ask you, "whats the ribbon for?", then you have ample reason to "educate".
2. There have been 50 million emails sent out about the Rally at Jena. I know you got at LEAST one. You could easily have forwarded it to all the African Americans in your office that you wanted to "educate". Once you did that, then the ball is in their court to want to learn more.
There was no reason for your guy in "Upper Management" to come tear up your sign. Clearly you didn't read your employee handbook when you were hired. Im pretty sure that there is a section that is devoted to racially, sexually, and politically motivated signs, stickers, actions. Im pretty sure that if it was a "higher up" that tore it up, he is in strict violation as well.
