I Have A New-Found Respect For NBA Players. God Damn!

He is not an NBA player but when I was in high school me and the boys went into Okla St. gym to play ball and the starting pg for them Doug Gottlieb (guy that be on ESPN) was already in there shooting and wanted to play with us. Well Doug was known to suck at shooting if you saw him play for Okla St.

:smh: This white dude was killin us from behind the 3 point line. He would do a cross and just pull money almost every time. His team never lost that day. Made us realize a shitty D1 college player is still pretty good to regular/high school kids. DOUG FUCKING GOTTLIEB people.
:lol:Yeah I remember playing Doug also and he would hit his threes if you left him open...

Dion Glover went to my high school (not at the same time), and I talked to Coach Dill, who said, "He'll make it to the NBA, but he won't stick. He's one of the best players I've ever had, but those guys in the NBA are scary good, and I don't think he's there."

Cedar Grove's finest. Best HS basketball player I've ever seen. I played against Dion on some casual shit. I never played for my HS but I ran against him at run n shoot a couple of times and I thought that nigga was the second coming of MJ. Quick, nasty hops, crazy handle, wasn't missing Js and was strong as a fucking bull. I never thought there could be a more sure thing on the nba but dude still couldn't cut it.

Kenny Smith was a star when he played. If he wasn't he woudn't be doing on that show.

this. Kenny Smith was nice in the league. Not to mention he won two championships. And Brian Scal that plays for the Bulls now, he's known in the league for being able to shoot and stretch the D.

Those guys are definitely good but they have so many good players, luck and good timing are the reason a lot of guys in the league are there.

Have any of you dudes even seen an NBA elite or NBA legend play in a pick up game?

With some of the amazing shit I've seen from dudes who never made it or weren't considered great, I'm trying to understand what's so damned different. What can you possibly do to be nicer?

Numbers game bro. How many teams do they have in the NBA? and you can only have 12 active players and 15 on your roster. And how many good serious hoopers with real resumes (college ball) do they have in N.Y. state alone?

That's just to get an idea of how many guys they have trying to get in the league, in one state......it's almost like a Harvard thing.....the hardest part is getting in there.

I've played ball and worked out with many of the NBA players hoopin now. They are very good. But to the next guy that has played pro or high level college ball, and works out everyday doing the same things or working out with them, the only difference is getting a legit shot.

I can tell you never played ball in your life :smh:

ofcourse i have

i've been 6'1 since 6th grade i used to bust grown ass mens ass

i grew a inch in highschool and thats where i stayed im 6'2

i played ball in highschool all 4 years

i was even recruited by some wack ass schools but honestly my grades were shitty

and yes george muresan and manute bol would bust ass in any play ground

george averaged like 15 pts a game in the nba, no regular nigga off the street has a chance against george muresan

and manute bol would kill any regular dude off the street

NBA Players. God Damn!

very good response, C.

the element of confidence is only a minor factor.

here are others that are equal or a larger factors.

intelligence: some players, who had sterling collegiate careers simply can't grasp aspects of the professional game and flounder at camp.

athletic peak: players who have relied upon their athleticism have plateaued and will never reach another level.

skill growth retarded: fans assume a necessary progression of talent as a player moves along from high school and beyond. unfortunately, coaching levels aren't static everywhere (as cbeezy can certainly attest to playing in europe), and player growth can be stunted.

1. Defense in the NBA is CRAZY
2. The game is fast and HELLA physical
3. Count the number of wide open shots you see in any random NBA game :itsawrap:

It is hard to get a shot off in the NBA so unless you ain't shooting like 75%+ (no joke) when you are wide open might as well forget about it

Confidence is everything when playing ball. I know some of you Chi-town brothers remember Teddy Grubbs. He was all everything in highschool. He followed Mark Aquire to Depaul and lost his confidence. He did not do one thing while he was at Depaul.
nah ... confidence don't really play a part until you are talking about two elite athletes with similar talent ... before that it is heart traning and determination ... if you mean confidence in yourself to be successful than yes but if you mean "swagger" forgetaboutit that kind of confidence is a great way to NOT make it to the NBA

Damn, dude...

That's a little dis-heartning, lol. To think someone sacrificed their social life, and still didn't make it.

That's just proof that you have to be a freak, in one way or another, to make it at that level. All the hard-work in the world won't get you there if you don't have a natural talent that set's you apart...

1. That is why they get paid crazy money because it is a huge risk and you have to sacrifice everything to make it
2. You don't have to be a freak...you just have to work hard and refuse to take no for an answer ... of course being 6'3" or taller doesn't hurt either

Here's something we haven't considered yet..

Sure NBA players are truly gifted & are freaks of nature, but does the relative height of the rim paired with their unusual heights, give them more of an advantage? I say DEFINITELY!!!

I mean, the average height of an NBA player is 6'6" (if not more) and the rim is at an even 10 ft. Really, How high do they have to jump with a rim that low. Also when you're that tall, you tend to shoot better cuz you have a better clearer view of the rim. Also, Longer arms = better shooting.

I think thats why they look so damn good on the court

Most of us regular cats are prolly 6 ft tall and below. Now imagine if regulation height of the rim for us was 9 feet instead of 10. Imagine how good we would be too

Now I realize that still don't fully explain their quickness, instincts and athletic ability, but it sure does help a lot!

Who's to say us regular cats wont be nicer on a relatively lower rim?

You mean to tell me a cat like AI or Nate wouldn't be even MORE dominant on a 9ft rim??

Basically, all I'm saying is having the rim at 10 feet for them tall ass niggas gives them an unfair advantage.

I'm sure you cats know Kenny 'The Jet' Smith from TNT, and formerly of the Houston Rockets.

Kenny was never a super-star, but he played in the NBA. As of today, that shit says a lot to me. It's not that I thought guys could actually make it and be straight garbage, but...

Well, a friend of mine gave me a video he recorded back in 1998 of Kenny Smith, God Shamgod(Cat from NY, that played for Providence, with the slick handles), and Joe Wolf, formerly of the Orlando Magic. These dudes were working out, right? Now, peep ... Shamgod was always known for having a broke jumper, and Joe Wolf's GAME was broke(At least on the pro-level) and Kenny Smith could always dial it in from long distance, but...

On this video, I see God Shammgod knocking down jumpers like they were lay-ups. Sure, it was a work-out, but this dude would knock down 15, miss on or two, hit another 15, miss one or two, knock own another 15. I'm like, what in the fuck am I seeing? I've never seen that kind of shooting in my life.

Joe Wolf? This big gawky White boy was firing away from deep like it was breathing. I mean jumper after jumper after motherfucking jumper. I'm wondering how did that dude suck in the NBA, at all.

If you think this is nothing because it's not in a game, then get a ball, go outside, and try to knock down fifteen 15-foot jumpers in a row.

But, that's not even the best of it...

Kenny Smith. Kenny Fucking Smith...

This is my fucking word...

...The Jet knocked down 20 three's. Missed one. Knocked down TWENTY-FIVE!! Missed two. Knocked down like 11. Missed one. Knocked down 24....

You get my point.

They played this game where you started at the top of the key, and you could only use two dribbles. All three of those guys were draining jumpers like it was nothing...

I thought to myself, 'None of these guys were superstars, and they're hitting shots like it's throwing a rock into a ocean. The NBA must be a motherfucker. GOD-DAMN! HOW GOOD WAS JORDAN, REALLY ... IF THESE DUDES LOOK LIKE JORDAN RIGHT NOW?!?!"

To any of you cats that tried to make it pro, and never made it, I understand completely now. These dudes are FAR better than people give them credit for.

I loved watching Kenny Smith and Joe Wolf play for North Carolina Tarheels back in the day. Thanks for the story.

Don't forget, the NBA is like the land of Giants. A cat like Ray Allen is this little dude on your screen, but in person, towers over everyone in the room. You watch these games on television and see a cat like Nate Robinson and think he's just this little dude that can jump. But if you see the dude in person, you will see that at 5'8" this is a big dude compared to the average 5'8" man.

true shit

Man, let me tell a couple of my stories.

Man, when I was a freshmen in HS, Denham Brown (played for UCONN throughout his college career, second round pick to the Sonics but didn't make the team, plays overseas now) this nigga dropped 110 points. This nigga was burying 3 pointers from 3 feet BEHIND the arc. That's all he did. SHOOT 3'S!!! He barely even drove to the hoop, he simply didn't have to. I'm sure he hit at least 25 3 pointers that game.

I hooped against Devoe Joseph, division 1 player that just recently got suspended (and i'm pretty sure kicked off) the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Man, this nigga :smh::smh::smh::smh: played with no effort at all. All he did was shoot. When he wanted to get to the hoop, he torched anyone who was guarding them. He was so fast, you couldn't even double team him. He would pull up from literally anywhere on the floor past half court and hit the shot.

His brother Cory is ballin his ass off at Texas right now. Seen that lil nigga hoop too and he is a straight up BALLER. LIGHTENING fucking fast and the coldest handles I've ever seen. This nigga is not even considered to be a shooter but he wouldn't miss :smh::smh: just scary good.

I consider myself to be a pretty decent ball player. I've been playing my whole life, all throughout middle school and HS competitively but seeing these guys :smh::smh: makes you feel really shitty about your "skills":lol:

Wouldn't lowering the basket make it even MORE 'unfair'?

I disagree wholeheartedly with this comment. It's much, much, much easier (but not easy) to make it to the NFL than the NBA.

Yeah, but the number of prospects increase because more positions need to be filled.

The same stories about the difficulty of making it pro, and excelling, go for the NFL as well.

Man, that gotta be bullshit.

How can a dude who can drop 110 points not be the fucking man ANYWHERE? I've seen a dude drop 50 in a game, and he was ridiculously nice with it. Of course, he wasn't pro material...

...but scoring 100 points or more suggests you just have a fucking supernatural knack for scoring. I just don't see how it's possible dude couldn't excel at the highest level. Shit, I don't ever recall hearing about MJ, Kobe, 'Bron, D Wade, etc, etc, etc ever scoring 100 points.

Re: NBA Players. God Damn!

Ive made tons of arguments about how poor of a shooter Iverson was throughout his career so you dont need to tell me. His lack of dedication ruined what could have possibly been a really spectacular career...now he wont even be considered up there with the real greats

However, considering how late in age he actually considered basketball as a profession, his size, and lack of real dedication,etc.... that illustrates just how physically gifted he was in terms of speed and athleticism because it certainly wasnt his size, pure shooting ability, or basketball IQ that was putting him over the top

iverson is like lance armstrong. that dude has freakish stamina... oversized lungs and heart. he doesn't give a fuck bout practice cause he never got tired.

i've seen him play 2x live. AI has to be the fastest mofo i've ever seen laterally.

did you know j.d.?

:yes::yes::yes:

:yes::yes::yes:

That's interesting, because dude never looked like he was moving all that fast to me. Only when he would cross some over would it become apparent he was quick as lightning.

I'm obviously not trying to refute what you're saying, but he's never looked as fast as he's reputed to be. Not in the way that Earl Boykins looks fast. It's clear that Earl is like a bumble bee running around that motherfucker. People don't even really chase dude. They just try to get to where they think he'll be.

Dude, Steve Nash is faster than you think.

Re: NBA Players. God Damn!

Dude, Steve Nash is faster than you think.

I don't doubt that, but for as fast as AI was reputed to be...

...it just never LOOKED that way. Tony Parker, for instance, looks as fast as people say he is.

I remember seeing Damon Stoudamire play for the first time in the 1995 Rookie All-Star game, and dude was going so fast that I was afraid for him. He was still in control of what he was doing, but .... still. :smh:

Hell, outside of basketball, I used to feel the same way about Deion. Dude would be high stepping, and you can see him running past everyone - but he just didn't look like he was moving as fast as he actually was.

Because of what I do, I've befriended and played pick up games with a lot of pros. You know that scene in "Rush Hour 2" when Chris Tucker says, "Which one of y'all just kicked me in my face?"? Well, I had that feeling a lot seeing these guys make plays on the court, and they were just fucking around! :smh::eek:

I saw Taliek Brown - former UCONN PG - working on coming off of screens and pulling up for J's. Dude, I saw dude crossover so fast one time, until the defender didn't react until dude was actually letting the jumper go. He was moving THAT fast. The dude he crossed over on wasn't as talented as he was, but he was very quick. Dude just moved faster than dude's brain could compute.

Though it's probably too late to see it now because of his age...

...but I've always wanted to see Kobe's athleticism up close and personal. I always thought, relative to guys like, 'bron, Jordan, VC, D. Wade and others, that he wasn't a GREAT athlete. Now that's not to say I'm suggesting he isn't a GREAT athlete. I don't think Kobe's athleticism ever took anyone's breath away.

However, it would be interesting to know if I'd feel the same way if I got a chance to see him in person.

Ha!

I watched this dude who was was an All-SEC defensive player just straight put the clamps down on an entire half of the court. Dude positioned himself to where, no matter where the ball went on his side of the court, he'd be in position to guard or help. I saw dudes out there who I respected catch hell from one dude doing nothing more than sliding his feet, and keeping his hands up on defense.

Oh ... he did not log one minute in the NBA.

Is like watching the 100meter relay on the track. Sure the top 10 fastest men in the world are fast...no denying it. But lets see if they can run a 9.75 doing KICKOFF RETURNS during an actual game

:hmm:

u missed with that one. 10 fastest 100 meter runners in the world are pro athletes in their own right..

i know what u were trying for though... :smh:

I've seen these exact scenarios happen many times too. "scrub" niggas from the NBA would come home and torch the whole community in a game of pick up. This is exactly one of the reasons why I dislike that every couch potato in the US who never made it past the bench of their high school JV team thinks they can be a NBA coach and knows whats best and this and that....like shut the fuck up and just watch the game and go back to ya shitty desk job in the morning.
