I finally decided to go for disability

Do you know what the pay is like?
I have an idea, but I’ll wait and see what they say if they approve me. The last 10 years I was making around 80 or $100,000 a year so. I was trying not to come to this point, but my health is not cooperating. Plus I need medical insurance to really calm down my health and a little bit of benefits because I want to relax for a year even with my current job I have I can’t keep up with it anymore with my health.

Damn fam, just seeing this. Hope the recovery is going good.
My brother (56) had many issues and just finally got approved.
Relax, less stressing and stay good fam.

Yeah, I’m here. I tried to act like everything was normal afterwards, but it is not normal. I have to do what I need to do right now because I can’t no longer do the 9-5 thing anymore.
one of my home girls had a stroke at the age of 45 and she thought the same way 2 yrs later she is still trying to bounce back slowwwwly
and she was a very active chic at one time and now she didnt realize her whole hook up was off and was trying to drive short trips to the store
and her brain wasnt having that...yes you did the right thing to sit down... cause i knew a few others that didnt and ther are not here any more...
take yo sweet ass time and bounce back aint shit going no where out here...

i just caught this thread also
hopefully everything works out in your favor after the process is complete

The stroke I had in February really fucked me up. I got better, but the left side of my body is really wonky so I have decided to sign up for disability and see how it goes

Don’t know how I misses this.

Sorry to hear that, all the men on Pops side have had strokes so this frightens me.

Care to share mor info, what type of stroke and do u think there’s anything that could’ve been done to lessen or avoid chances.

BTW, men when you hit 50….colonoscopy, cardiac stress test, prostate exam and blood work PLEEEEEEEEEEZ…..

Sistas, take time out to have them breasts rubbed on by a professional….

CARRY ON……..

I made this post so other people can be aware of their bodies especially when you get near 50. I had signs that this was going to happen and I didn’t pay attention to it until the last minute…..it could have been very very bad if I waited any longer. Take care of yourself people.

Respect, Easy. Thanks for updating us and focus on #1 always - yourself.

Credit to your mom and GF as well.

I've known a number of clients, family members, coworkers, and friends of family who have had strokes over the past 25 - 30 years. All to varying degrees of side effects thereafter. Lifestyle changes are key. More rest and recovery, etc. Like you said - you've worked hard for many years and paid into the system ... now it's your time to receive support. You've earned it.

They made me signed up for last March and I didn’t pay it no mind until the end of the summer and I was like Yep I’m going to have to do go through with this. I’m so happy they push me to do this.

Agreed and well said. Sometimes all it takes is that motivation and push from your loved ones.

Helps to get things done / crossed off the list. I remember some years back getting into the habit of writing down important stuff. Just to have a list to check things off of. Whether it was big bill payments for the year / appts I needed to schedule in the future / certain work re-certifications I needed to get completed / booking travel plans or keeping potential time off available (for when family was in town). I found it kept me in check and things didn't sneak up on me. It was easier to have 1 big list instead of little notes on phone or paper calendar (personally).

Ok, I didn't follow along. I thought you were just starting the process.

A couple of years ago, I survived septic shock. It left me with some cognitive issues and neurological damage. I applied last year in March and was approved about this time last year. I didn't have to go see any of there doctors.

Good luck

Sorry you had to go through that, RD.

Glad to hear you got approved for support and are doing better.

Thanks. I’m fortunate I have a good pension but I was digging into my 401k too much. I paid into the system just for such an emergency. I literally had more than 1.5 million in medical bills. Insurance covered most of it but the follow care was expensive

You're welcome.

Yes - those medical bills / follow-up care really do add up quickly. Glad to hear insurance covered most of the former.

Speaking of septic shock ... had an incident a few years back with a client which was scary. Early-60s ... he was presenting as normal, then suddenly became non-communicative. Checked in with him and was gonna check his vitals and gave him a glass of water. He was shaking and knocked the water over on the table then started to fall to the floor after exhibiting what looked to be a seizure. I braced his fall and fortunately he was slowly lowered to the floor without impact. Called paramedics and waited with him and reassured him. They showed up 45 mins later. They were NOT sure what was wrong with him, and posed that it might be septic shock. Tested his vitals / had him on oxygen / gave him IV fluids. Firefighters arrived as well and were unsure. Got him off to the hospital via ambulance.

Turns out it was symptoms / side effects from his 2nd bout with COVID. All I could do when I reassured him was to stay present / remind him he'd be ok / breathe / relax. He maintained off and on eye contact, but still couldn't speak.

This was the summer of 2022 or 2023.

I resigned from my job last week, so hopefully everything goes through with this disability cause I couldn’t do that at work anymore and it wasn’t hard work. I hated to leave but I had to. :( To be honest with you guys I started getting dizzy spells sometimes and I work by myself, so it was best for me to get out of the fire before it burnt me.

I am in the Virginia area waiting to complete the disability thing….if everything goes through I am going back to Atlanta.

Not sure how I missed this, just saw it as a related thread. Hope you’re doing better and your disability application goes thru smoothly.

Hopefully you were able to get it. My mom wasn't able to until she got a lawyer. That was like 13 or 14 years ago though.

I didn’t get a lawyer this time because I definitely have a left side issue. I can’t even walk straight. I have to use a walking cane so hopefully things go through without a lawyer because I hate to drag a lawyer into this. I see the last doctor next week and then they will decide from there.

I had a minor stroke in May last year man. I was playing my usual online video game and all of a sudden I was seeing double. I thought it was due to being tired so I shook my head and closed me eyes for a few and it did not go away. I got up from the computer chair and felt a little wobbly still felt it was due to being tired. Went to lay down to see if it would go away, woke up three hours later when my wife came in and woke me up. I opened my eyes and she was twice the woman I married lol, I had her call 911 and the EMT asked me a few questions he was pissed that I went to lay down, I was really disoriented when answering his questions they took me in the ambulance to the ER. Long story short they found I had had a minor stroke in the left thalmic lacumar infarct. It only affected my vision and balance slightly, I will be on aspirin for the rest of my life and keep on my cholestorol meds (I had stopped taking them). We both dodged bullets man, I have read that there are much more severe outcomes, My cousin had one and it totally devasted his right side of his body he is on disability too. This happened under Biden so not sure if the process to get disability has gotten any more stringent under this moron. Good luck to you fam glad you are on the other side of things....
