Rule 1. Avoid buying soft bottom casuals.
Rule 2. Buy hard bottoms, and take them to the shoemaker (before wearing them), and get heel and toe plates (taps) installed. Replace the taps before they are worn down.
Rule 3. If you must buy soft bottoms, don't spend alot of money because they are throw aways. After two years they are most likely out of style and for the cost of getting a new heel/sole, you can get a new shoe.
I have casual hard bottoms, and dressy/suit hardbottoms.
Personal tip...
On really casual days... I'm in a pair of low top timbs (contructs). You can get them at the outlets in Black and Nubuck for $35 if you catch a sale. I buy them 3 or 4 at a time so I can always have a crispy fresh pair.
