I am checking out Kickstarter.com, trying to get my projected funded.

Kickstarter vs Indigogo vs StartSomeGood

StartSomeGood
- all contributions refunded if goal is not met, none kept by project (Fixed Funding)
- charges when goal is met (delayed contributions)
- does not offer tax deductions
- uses paypal
- smallest audience

Kickstarter
- there is a screening process
- largest audience
- uses Amazon payments which have an additional charge of 5%.
- charges when goal is met (delayed contributions)
- all contributions refunded if goal is not met, none kept by project (Fixed Funding)
- offers tax deductions for 501(c)(3) contributions

Indiegogo
- no screening process
- larger audience
- uses Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress
- uses paypal
- charges 9%, if goal is met a rebate of 4% is given, bring your net to 5%
- 3% processing fees, lower if proof of non-profit status is given
- contributions are withdrawn immediately via ACH from contributors
- for international payments via credit card there is a $25 wire transfer fee

From the above and considering the risk element inherent in a first project, I would recommend that you use Indigogo.

With Indiegogo, if you fall short on goal you would still be able to keep the contributions and you would have lessons learnt for the next project.

The downside is that you would not be able to utilize the larger audience of Kickstarter.
The larger audience would mean a larger discovery pool of contributors.
However both platform require work to engage an audience larger than existing family and friends of the project.

Is it people that you know that fund the project? Or are there unknown contributors that look at all the projects?

A mix of both.

You bring your family and friends, their friends and other people on there notice and hopefully the other people jump in.

It's still a lot of work on you to use social media etc to ge the word out there.

I like Indigogo because you get to keep what you raised as opposed to kickstarter where if you don't meet goal, you get nothing.

prosper.com will do business (and private) loans in amounts smaller than what banks will give.

Loans are funded by private investors.

Interest rates based on credit.

Also a place to invest if you have the funds.

Fuck Kickstarter, I am getting the run around on Amazon Payments which is blocking my access. They keep issuing some canned response...They never had problem taking my money when I bought shit from Amazon.

I guess the elites are trying hard to repress the truth from the people.

Great thread.

I'm looking to raise about $15,000 for a documentary on a non-profit I'm working with. We've been sending "inner city" kids here in Oakland to college all expenses paid since 1996. Money is drying up, so I want to follow up with all of the kids who have graduated college, have them tell their stories. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like you need help putting together a strategy with someone knowledgeable in alumni fund raising.

Do your campaign on indigogo.

Leave kickstarter for more advanced fundraising

If you don't uave funding you need to be a great salesman. No one is giving you anything. Remember when someone does give you funding they are looking at making a profit also. Their share of the profits may be a lot larger than yours

Great thread. I was always told to go to the chamber of comerece

I know there has to be some better places for finding investors. Especially for a green company owned my a woman minority such as mine:D

Community organization with people who care about the whole. Come together and conglomerate. Everyone bring theirs to the table, and agree to work for the betterment of the whole. Black women included. :hmm:
