How America's Top Colleges Avoid Real Diversity

It is simply focus and priorities. A good Nigerian friend of mine has a son who was all-state his Junior year in baseball. His son's grades slipped below an A average he didn't let him play his senior year.

This is the primary Reason why Africans beat everyone in the country. African Americans don't have that type of culture, the culture was lost during slavery. There are pockets of African Americans who are like this, just not enough.

So this article has gone off subject like I suspected it would. People are focusing on the Africans vs African Americans debate...

I think the worrysome ideas are:

1. African Americans are getting left by the wayside, these ivy league schools realize the problem is deep, so they ignore it when they accept first generation Africans...
2. African Americans must demand more of their government. Obama is a prime example of an black person (that did not descend from slaves) who has benefited from his blackness in America
3. The educational disparity is terrible for African Americans, we should be on red alert about this because as America falls behind educationally, African Americans are at the back of the pile...

The American system is the enemy--NOT Africans

1) Brother incog, African-Americans(AA) are not being left by the wayside. A majority of them simply don't measure up to the requirements of going to a PRIVATE institution. The article notes that " 'When we compare immigrant blacks to African Americans from similar family socioeconomic backgrounds, we find no significant differences between them in their chances of attending college', says Pamela Bennett." This quotation is an example of many AA's inability to attend PRIVATE institutions, because it is an issue of ECONOMICS. Furthermore, there are AA's who are lower income that do attend these private institutions, because of their RESILIENCE, INTELLIGENCE, and DESIRE to succeed. The story of "Teresa Wiltz, senior editor of black politics and culture website The Root, [who] graduated from Dartmouth in the 1980s" proves that lower income students are capable of ACHIEVING and attending private institutions. The article notes that "She says that a lot of her black peers did benefit from programs helping low-income minorities, but the African immigrants with whom she went to school were very affluent," which goes back to the issue of ECONOMICS

These elite institutions are by and large status quo and reaffirm the global power structure as well as beingPRIVATE, and as such have their own REQUIREMENTS of who they let in.

If there are AA's who aren't able to afford private schools, or aren't able to attend because they don't fulfill the academic standards have EVERY opportunity to attend PUBLIC institutions and thrive there. There are scholarships, grants, federal student aid as well as in-state tuition that are available and allows AA students to attend colleges and universities.

2) You are correct AA's should demand more of their government. There is an argument being made for the reformation of PUBLIC SCHOOLS from K-12 that may also be made for colleges and universities. Yes Barack Obama benefited from his blackness in America, but he has the RIGHT to benefit from his blackness, because the civil rights movement fought to make conditions fair for ALL BLACK PEOPLE.

3) Yes the educational disparity sucks for AA's, but we need more black people to be devoted to our achievement in this country. We need more black people to inspire our youth that education is the KEY to success. "It takes a village..."

So do you think Mexicans are different from the native Americans who were in this land prior to the Europeans' arrival? If you take a second to think about it, you will arrive at the right answer. So yes, they do have "reservations" here.

Do I really sound like a white man telling someone to get over slavery? Ok here's a better idea, let's all go back in time and free all of the slaves and truly abolish slavery before it gets out of hand. The fact of the matter is, nothing can be done about it. The Moors took over Spain for hundreds of years. You see the Spaniards took it back from them and do quite nicely now. This is an example of not harboring on the past and moving forward.

The Moor example was a gross distortion. The Moors didn't rob the Spaniards of their culture, language, their essence, commit genocide or enslave damn near the whole population. I think you'll realize that was pretty stupid to say.

your point about being a part of the nation's success is correct. we are a vital part of the establishing of this nation, but we get sick of you foreigners saying shit like we are "lucky" to be here like we didnt earn the birthright.

Yes African Americans are the luckiest black people on this planet, and it does have to do with their struggle and contribution to this land, but it also has to do with the contributions of Marcus Garvey and other foreign blacks that contributed to the struggle here in America. There is a rich history and struggle in this land that many African Americans should be proud of, and we should continue to promulgate and use this history as inspiration going forward. We blacks need to use our struggle as FUEL to ACHIEVE in this land.

Those motherfuckers became billionaires from slave labor. 400 years later and their descendants control the financial system, the top jobs, top schools, etc. We'll get over it when we get our reparations.

Co-sign. the Native Americans, the Japanese interned in concentration camps in the US during WW2, and the Jews who didn't live in the US during WW2 were given or were aided in receiving REPARATIONS. Black people in the US and the diaspora have yet to receive any form of reparations for their free labor.

U right. But the fact remains, we cannot change the past. So there's no point in crying about it. Can I use the Jews as an example? Even though they cry about it, they have definitely moved forward. When you have young black minds (BGOL) professing that higher education is a scam, you know the chains haven't been untied completely.

Nah the Jews aren't a good example either. It wasn't as bad AND they got reparations. Furthermore, the blacks persecuted in Germany got nothing. I'm one of the "striver" types so I'm with you on fighting regardless, but the black experience is very unique and tragic.
