Hidden cameras reveal dark side of solar power

this came up in my feed recently. i'm still on the fence. mostly because i really want to move and because of the horror stories.

I don't understand why anyone would be interested in this after running the numbers. That dude said the system would cost $320 a month for 20 years! Who the fuck uses that much power in their house?!? As soon as I heard that the conversation is over.
I live in NJ. We have power outages. Most of the time 5 minutes a month. A few hours like twice a year. 2-3 years ago the power was off for 4 days. So, power generation is a must.

So, the equation becomes generator where you have the initial cost then maintenance. Or do I get solar and powerwalls where there is a greater cost but I’m chipping into that cost everyday?

We could’ve gotten a generac generator. Let’s say it was $20k. Cool. $20 k I’m done.

I ordered my powerwalls 2-3 years ago that were finally installed today. Cost me $15k. Now it would be more like $22-25k. However, even if my solar and powerwalls only save me $2-6 per day or $1-2k per year, how long before I make that money back. How many months with no electric bill? Does a generator do that? Of course not.

It’s kind of like my law practice. I may not win in the end but I had to give myself a chance to win. I don’t see a chance of winning with a generator.

Interesting. I had no idea New Jersey had those kind of power issues.

Yeh, i'm in Burlington. Tress and power lines along the rear border or our properties. Wind blows too hard and power goes. We do have pseg in the town. They come around on occasion to check and trim trees that can be a problem, but its often reactive.

The Tesla app shows us all of the power loss events and their duration. From January 2022 to the present, there have been 18 backup power events for a total of 10 hours. The longest was 3 hours. Most of the time, it appears to be maintenance on an almost monthly basis for 5 minutes.

Seeing how the powerwalls were fully installed today, I'll let you guys know how it goes. I'm expecting to have a surplus of electricity from mid-March through mid-October.

First full day with solar and 3 powerwalls after adding 2 powerwalls. Normal day. Also ran A/C for ½ hour. Ran washing machine, dishwasher, and clothes dryer. Not only did I not use the power grid for anything today ($0). I sold some Kwh back to the energy company $1-2.

Like I said previously, fuck Elon but damn if he doesn't save me money.

Solar and powerwalls are no brainers especially if you live in the South.

Can power house. Charge Tesla cars 30 miles, run 3-4 loads of laundry and dishwasher for $0.00. Still have 6-8 hours of power left.

my aunt & uncle in Jacksonville decided against gettin solar panels and got a backup generator installed instead.
it cost them $12k,....i saw it put in action last week when they had a storm. power went off on their whole neighborhood, and it kicked in 3 seconds after the power went out.
The generator is powered by both gas and battery.

How were the noise levels??

Not sure what yall have in ur states but Im in Cali so solar is hella beneficial. Cali has a government kickback that you get after 18 months of of having your system. I think its about 40% of your system. Heres a quickbreak down

My household AVERAGE $240-$260 a month for electricity. Thats on regular months. In the June-Sept months...we go to about $400-550.

We got panels during NEM 3.0 where Edison (Socal energy provider) gives us back %100 of credits (overage) what we send to the grid. In April 2023, they dropped it down to a 25% return so I got grandfathered in for the 100%.

Now when I get my kickback, itll be $16k

My current fixed payment is $180 a month and my system is built to have 120% coverage for 20% over in case our usage increases with an electric car or some ish.

So the way the kick back works is. after 18 months.....we get 16k. If we KEEP that then our payment goes from a fixed rate of $180 a month to a fixed rate of $240. If we take that 16k and put it back into the panels, then our payment stays at $180. You can take half, all, none, some, etc. But your payment will increase depending on how much you keep for urself.

and since we are constantly sending back at least 20% but to our electric company a month (give or take on usage)...we get a kick back at the end of the year with a 100% return

I shopped around and got all type of numbers. But ultimately came down to I didnt want no adjustable rates and I wanted a kickback and not too many companies do that. The one I went with has a 30 year warranty on everything when most companies are only 25 years on panels and 10-15 years on ur roof.
