Hey BGOL what is the difference between Atheist and Agnostic?

I have done the research but I have not come to simple definition or meaning of Agnostic. I know the definition of Atheist but not Agnostic. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Agnostic,youre open to the idea of a superior being,even though you have no evidence to support such claim,although not so much in from theological/religious perspective.

Atheist, anti theist/you do not believe in a superior being,there is no evidence to support such beliefs.

atheist don't believe god exist

agnostic does believes the existence of god can not be proved

Like 30-40 G's cocksucker beat it!

No really lol but what Skatta said.

Sent from ya girl crib!

The crux of your argument is based on the premise that there is a segment of atheists who believe in a god, which is a contradiction in terms. If one believes or reasons in an all-powerful being, he/she is a theist or deist.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/theism
theism
1. the belief in one God as the creator and ruler of the universe, without rejection of revelation.
2. belief in the existence of a god or gods.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/deism
deism
1. belief in the existence of a God on the evidence of reason and nature only, with rejection of supernatural revelation.
2. belief in a God who created the world but has since remained indifferent to it.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/atheism
atheism
1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

Then you try to support that contradiction with the false assumption that people use the term "god" or "goddess" in a very narrow way. How people use the term "god" or "goddess" is irrelevant in proving whether Einstein is atheist or not.

Again, it's a contradiction in terms to say that any segment of atheists are agnostic. One cannot purport that god doesn't exist AND that the existence of god is unknowable.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/agnostic
agnostic
a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

Agnostic: Belief there may be a higher power but this knowledge is unknowable.

Atheist: There is no evidence to support a belief in a God or higher being until proven otherwise.

Agnostic: i believe in a higher power or being, but the current religions are bullshit and can't be the path to god. I will keep an open mind to seek this path on my journey since the journey will lead me to the catalyst (lack of a better description)
Atheist: your god and religions are bullshit. As there is no proof nothingness so is your spiritual being. There is no empirical or measurable evidence of it since it deals in your faith... Which is the same thing we tell kids and Santa.
Theist: i have faith in the one true god; my god or gods, and believe in god as god believes in me. There is a world which we are not made privy to because its for god to show us if we follow the rules.

A = No
GNOSTIC = KNOWLEDGE

Agnostics have no knowledge of God.

A = No
THEIST = GOD

Atheist don't believe God exist.

Most definitions are wrong here. Atheists reject the god claims. That is it. Agnostics are just confused. Lol. Agnostics are uncertain about the God claims.

You are not agnostic. You are a theist who rejects religious tenets for whatever reason.

This dude starting threads with questions that could be answered by a dictionary.:smh:

Which is why I wanted to ask this question here. The definition given by a dictionary is not complete. Some people here have shown miniscule differences of the meanings, yet I find the answers that people are answering profound and informative.

Agnostics are just confused.

Most of us Agnostics would argue just the opposite. Theist & Atheist seem to feel this need to claim a position that that they can't possibly prove at our current level of understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Us Agnostics simply acknowledge that we have not learned enough, so we continue the search for answers! There is nothing 'confused' about Agnostics! We do not believe in the fairy-tail of the invisible man in the sky AND we recognize that there is 'order' all around us and that thing are not random.

The function of a scientist is the exact same as an Agnostic (and most scientist ARE Agnostic).

My 2 cents

The top scientists are atheists.

Atheism is a rejection of the god claims. That is it.

Agnostic do not necessarily take a stance on the god claims. They are basically saying they don't know which almost validates the claims of the religious, and in the world of religious belief anything goes. They can make any claim that is so absurd which is oftentimes done. The religious claims of Judeo-Christian Islamic beliefs are absurd but they don't seem so absurd if you have grown up in a culture that promotes them. Agnostics take no stand in the absurdity. They say...
Maybe they exist. Maybe they don't. I don't know."

An atheist can not assert that they know the nature of the cosmos. We don't but knowing existence and making a god claim are totally different.

An atheist doesn't have to be logical or come to their conclusion through logic. They can be one for purely emotional reasons, but then again... Atheism is just a rejection of the god claims.

Also, we people are speaking about gods and stuff they are usually talking about a particular religion, and as I said, atheism is just a rejection of the god claims.

If you get that in your head then you can understand.

Even religious people are atheists to some degree. They reject the god claims of many religions except for theirs. Atheists just go one step further.

Agnostics allow for everything to go. Everyone's claim is valid in the eyes of an agnostic because they don't know.

Sometimes i hate when we have to put labels on rational thinking people to me there is not much difference at all between the two since when either one of these words are mentioned they are always paired with religion or god.

Every rational person is basically agnostic and will lead an agnostic life until he/she dies just because you are atheist about a few subjects don't mean you stop being agnostic in your pursuance of knowledge.

I would hope most scientist are agnostic as this is what drives rational people to keep questioning things and seeking the answers that some claim to have the answer to and others dismiss.

If we keep up with these ill worded labels we will look no better than most religious denominations with there bazillion different factions and sects, there is so much more to being a freethinker than religion

You are correct most scientist are agnostic and most people are as well.

Agnostic's say know one can know, It's a generalisation. That mean's a man such as Moses would be dismissed in our times because though he worked miracles, it was only seen by some not the whole world at that time. Then there are those who would try to explain the works that he did away through science.

There are those simply in the know and those that are not. Atheist are the one's running around especially on this site perturbed. It reminds me of Jesus speaking to Paul on the road to Damascus. Many atheist travel that same road metaphorically speaking. Jesus saying to SAUL, Saul Saul, why do you kick against the prick.

You Atheist and Agnostics argue, because deep down you know the answers you have are not adequate but cannot deal with having to humble yourselves to a more daunting revelation. So now your kicking and your foot is bleeding. By the way when the bible speaks of feet, it represents your doctrinal stance and the direction that stance leads you in. It's why Moses was first told to remove his sandals?

Me- Agnostic.

Maybe there is something, maybe not, maybe something beyond my comprehension. Don't go to church, don't subscribe to any religion, cause that isn't my thing, but hey-

As Tommy Lee Jones said in Men in Black;

1500 years ago, everyone KNEW that the Earth was the center of the universe.

500 years ago, everyone KNEW that the Earth was flat, and

15 minutes ago, you (talking to Will Smith) KNEW Man was alone in the Universe.

Just imagine what we'll KNOW tomorrow.

My friend- Athiest-

There is NO GOD and anyone who thinks there is, is an idiot. There is no proof, therefore there is no GOD.

That is how I see the difference

Agnostics allow for everything to go. Everyone's claim is valid in the eyes of an agnostic because they don't know.

Actually no one's claim is valid in the agnostics view because the claim can't be proved.

Atheist know there is no God. Religions know there is a God.

Agnostics know that it can neither be proved that there is a God or that there is not a god.

Agnostics don't have a claim. They take no stance except for that they don't know. Under this position anything can be valid. From the agnostics point of view, my claim that there is a yellow elephant in my backyard that I pray to is valid. The agnostic doesn't know that the yellow elephant exists. The agnostic doesn't require proof of my claims. The agnostic doesn't make any challenge thereby giving credence to my claim no matter how absurd it is. All that is required of me is to get numbers and the agnostic retreats even further.

Atheists don't accept the "god" claims. "god" claims come from a particular perspective. When someone in this nation talks about "god" whether they came to be religious or "spiritual" they are making the claim based on the Judeo-Christian Islamic god. They are not talking about Mithra, Caesar, some totem or whatever else. They are making a specific claim. The atheist rejects those claims. Atheists require proof of the claims.

There are actual "gods" that have existed. Whether that "god" is effective or possesses some ability outside the natural world is pointless. During their time, people thought this person or persons were gods and they were worshiped as such.

Religions claim their god, goddesses or gods exists. There are thousands of religions with varying claims and all purport theirs to be the truth.

In this culture, this concept of a "god" allows for anything to go. They can make any claim and when one claim is disproved they just move the goal post.
