(CBS) At an age when many retired NFL players have traded their pads for a paunch and a place on the sofa, Herschel Walker is rocking a fighter's physique.

And that's no exaggeration. The muscular 48-year-old athlete - the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and one of the greatest pro running backs ever - is just getting started on a new career as a combatant in mixed martial arts.

"I've done a lot of hard things in my life, but this is one of the hardest," Walker said about his current workout regimen in an interview with StrikeForce, the mixed martial arts organization. "You're working every muscle in your body, you're sweating, you're going all out all the time."

Walker, who stands 6'1" and weighs 225, is the picture of health. So much so that he obliged the recent request to pose nude for ESPN magazine.

But he didn't get that way by following the usual rules about diet and fitness.

He wakes up at 5:30 a.m. and does 750 to 1,500 push-ups and about 2,000 sit-ups, according to CNN.

What does he eat? Not much. According to CNN, he has one meal late in the day. And you can forget about steak and potatoes. He's a vegetarian.

"I'm from old school," he told the network. "I grew up in south Georgia. They didn't worry about cholesterol or protein. They went out and worked and lived a long time, so I don't put a lot of worries in my mind. I just get it done."

In his first fight, Walker did just that. He took out fighter Greg Nagy with three strikes in the third round, according to the Strikeforce website.
 
i was doing 600 pushups a day...i could get into the situps...

but all on one meal?

that's insane.
 
Dude's a beast to be competing in a game made for men half his age. More power to him but he can't be eating one meal a day and maintaining 225 lbs with his workout regiment.

One Meal A Day

1 Eat one meal a day or one meal every other day, and it will prolong your life. Do not think that you will starve. On the contrary. you will be treating yourself to life, and a life filled with sickless days. You can hardly get sick eating this way. I know because I have this experience. If you eat the proper food -- which I have given to you from Allah (in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad to Whom be praise forever) in this book-- you will hardly ever have a headache.

2 In eating once a day or once every other day, you must not eat between meals. And, you should try to eat at the same hour tomorrow as you eat today. Do not change your meal hours if you can help it. That causes your stomach to react to various hours of the day for a meal, and will set up gas on the stomach. Do not even drink juices, milk, or soft drinks between meals.

3 And, do not eat candies or fruits between meals. You are welcome to drink water, but I know you will not want too much water between meals since your stomach will not call for it. You may drink coffee between meals, but do not fill your cup with half sugar and half cream and pour coffee on top of that. (smile) This (that I am trying to teach you) is the way that He (Almighty Allah) has taught me for you. I have given to you in this book the type of food that you should eat as Allah has given it to me.

4 Again I say, many vegetables are good to eat; also many fruits. But the vegetables you have been warned against eating such as collard greens, turnip salads, black -eyed peas, field peas, lima beans, butter beans and soy beans - Should not be eaten. Be sure that you do not eat the large size navy bean, eat the small size navy bean.

5 Surely Sugar diabetes can be controlled and driven out with your abstinence from eating sugar and Starchy foods. And, with your corrected way of eating once a day or once every other day (if started in time), you will become negative of Sugar in your blood. If you are a victim of sugar diabetes, you should not eat white or sweet potatoes. And even if you are not a victim of diabetes, you should not eat too much of any starchy food (such as potatoes), and positively no sweet potatoes. You Should be careful of eating this type of food.

Eat one good meal of food a day for good health. One meal a day or every two days could spell the end of much medicine, doctor bills and the building of hospitals if we would eat the proper food and eat it only when it is necessary to eat it.

There are a lot of people who think their appetite is their god; but we, by nature, have been made to control ourselves if we want to. I have much self-experience in the way of eating. I am often experimenting as I teach you, so that I will know what happens if you go contrary to the Teachings of “How To Eat To Live.” Eat one meal a day and eat the proper food in that meal, and do not eat between meals (a little of this and a little of that). I repeat, you will not be sick (only once in a great long time).

Every meal that we put in our bodies has some poison in it. And some of our food, as I have said in this book, takes 36 hours to digest. If we do not wait until our previous meal has been digested and add a new meal to the previous meal, we have new poison in its full strength to aid the dying poison of the previous meal or to help it to revive in strength; and we will continue to be sick.

This, I have experienced. I suffered sickness a lot of times through experimenting, so that you will not come and give me the wrong answer to the Teachings of “How To Eat To Live.” I have self-experimented. I will know whether you are telling me the truth or not. But, I will put my life on it; that if you make a habit of eating one meal every day or every two days and of eating the right food, you will not be sick (only one day out of the year or out of every two years); and some of the complaints that you have now will completely disappear.

By eating one meal a day, some chronic diseases will vanish in a few years as they fail to get the poison that will keep them alive. Sometimes, they vanish within a few months, if you eat the right foods and eat only one meal a day or every two days. Try it for yourselves.
 
Salad and soup :hmm: . Dude should be wasting away. Dude has to take a protein shake, bar or something. Dude looks like he eats meat.
 
I ate one meal a day for a few years and was in the best shape of my life... leaned out and had MORE energy than when I ate 3-5 meals. I play basketball several times per week for 3-5 hrs in a fasted state with no issues whatsoever. i wasn't shredded like Herschel, but I was 8-10%BF at about 200lbs. There was an adjustment period of maybe 7-12 days, but after that it was smooth sailing. Eating 5-6 times a day really doesnt make since... I believe that must have been started by supplement companies. Remember when you only needed 3 meals? In 2020 it will be 8 meals :smh: And you wonder why people are so overweight.

I fell off the wagon during the holidays but I'm in the process of getting back on the program:cool:

Yeah,thats crazy and to maintain 200+ pounds on a 6'1 frame.He would be much skinnier,unless he eats a hell of alot of bread but no protein soooo.

Yeah man. How is he maintaining all that muscle on such a diet.....and combine that with all the training he is doing.....he burns a lot of calories...he has to take supplements or something if he is only eating one meal per day :confused:

before November last year i was doing 30 pushups every 6 minutes for an hour in the morning and again at night.

and i learned HOW to d it right here on BGOL.

so again, just cause YOU can't do something doesnt mean it can't be done.

Am younger but with his regimen, I do not see it as being difficult @ all as have been eating 1 meal/day for years, @ times, none when too preoccupied & busy; ate only 1 meal today & am full.
HW's been doin the damn thing without them weights since & possibly b4 h.s. if am not mistaken;
Was talking about this brother in the summertime with this bboy who had himself, his brother in Fl & a few others focusing & building themselves up based on what this man has been doing;

I can have energy all day as well off one meal if i get a good 7-8 hours of sleep. People in other parts of the world that live longer than Americans dont follow Americas 1200-2000 calorie, 70+ gram of protein, etc a day regime and they live longer and are healthier than us..... but the shit he's talking about is unbelievable IMO. Aint no way in the hell he's that big and maintaining his muscles off one meal a day (soup, bread, salad), and doing all those activities off 4 hours of sleep.

Like I said...I know everyones body is different & the human body is capable of adapting....but after looking at him im finding his story hard to believe.


btw...i never heard of a vegetarian that sold meats to people. you wont eat it..but youl sell it to others. :confused:

its not impossible to do, and i appreciate that someone had to put me up on game as well.

i got so good at it that i did them with my feet elevate 17 inches in the air.

it IS possible to do when you know how to do it.

I aint calling you a liar about the workout cause out to sea in the navy we used to do 30 every 10 minutes on watch, but this is BGOL and "they are coming" if you aint got no pics with ole girl
 
yo i used to only eat one meal a day for a couple months and do an hour or so of meditation everyday...i have to say best i ever felt in my life yo...i fell off a bit in the sense that i dont do it everyday anymore but im thinking about going back to that...if you meditate any or are into the esoteric you will develop a lot spiritually by fasting
 
Herschel Walker know what he is talking about.Back in 96 i heard janet jackson say she didn't eat nothing but 1,000 calories a day.I said know damn way!

So i say fuck i will give it a try.I ate 1,000 calories ,1 meal and drink mad water.When i started my wt was 6'1 350lbs.In 7 months my wt went down to 235 lbs,but i also walk for 6 miles a day.Look at it like this.The more you eat the more you gain.Unless you work out to burn the fat.The less you eat and the more your work out the more you will burn.I know cat who is 6'3 and his wt was about 265.From april to june the only thing he do is drink fruit juice and eat peanut butter and crackers.He dont work out at all.His wt went from
265 to 185.The cat looks like new person.Hell i'm about to do my 1,000 1,000 calories a day.My wt is 250lb by july i should be 180 lbs.You cats can do what you want,but i will stick what has work for me.By the way that cracker howard stern eats nothing but brown rice each day.

It will take 7 days for you body to get over the shock.Once it does trust me .You will feel better and less headache.I also dont drink milk and eat less dairy products.

But then you can have 3-5 meals a day but they must be small meals like a 1/4 of a sandwich, fruit salad, etc.

Ive been a ovo-vegetarian for a while now. I usually soak my beans for a while to loosen the skin and release the gas-generator (oligosaccharide) before I cook and eat em. Beans cause gas because of the sugar oligosaccharide..which our bodies have trouble breaking down...and also because of the fiber thats locked inside. I usually soak for 4 hours in the fridge.....rinse....then soak again overnight. Soaking also cuts the cooking time by more than a half.

I usually soak my beans in plain water and just drink lots of water after i eat the beans to help push the fiber through. I very rarely get gas with my method.

I soak damn near every bean and nut/seed that i eat in order to unlock the nutrients and enzyme inhibitors. Gotta fool the seed into thinking its time to grow/sprout....if you dont...it wil keep all the goodies locked inside. I plan to make a thread about soaking beans and seeds/nuts soon for the health forum.

Black soy beans have the most protein out of all beans....but after seeing the large amounts of soybean oil used in most foods sold in the supermarket..I got extremely suspicious & kinda layed off em for a while. I eat more white beans, Lentils, Split peas etc i.e. beans that are next on the list after soy beans for beans highest in protein. If you wanna stick with soy beans...get the fermented soy beans. Fermented soy is the kind of soy thats consumed in most foreign countries like China, Japan etc. Because of the sudden "soy popularity"....most of the soy product producers in the US, even the organic ones, put revenue before the quality of their products. keep that in mind.

well like i said i was meditating everyday while doing this....the main reason i started in the first place was because you develop quicker spiritually by fasting...i reached a plateau in my meditation practice and decided that doing it everyday wasnt needed anymore...now i just do it once or twice a week
