The "He looks like a Gorilla....(King Kong/Fay Raye)"..It's offensive comments have started.....by a black woman..don't know her name...missed that part of the onset interview.....what's your out take on this?...me...I'm thinking people are being racially paranoid bout this one...:hmm:

Light I saw this cover in the market and thought nothing of it quite frankly. Some real wasted and misdirected energies out there.

C/S ... I just saw the magazine cover on my way home and thought it was funny and wondered if they had fun doing the shoot ... that was it:dunno:

it seems to me that there a lot of people got a big stick up their ass about the racial stuff...some legitimately...but when I saw the cover on the newscast...it didnt bother me at all....I just thought that Vogue never put too many blacks on their cover and now a black is on one of their covers...and in, to me, an artistic way....and I bet that if I started this thread on the main board...all the hiphop head/militants/youngins would be alll over this pic racially....

Exactly LS!

Well Light I would challenge that if anyone looks at Lebron James and says he looks like King Kong and Giselle as lilly white Faye Ray that is their own self hate and bs coming to the surface. Whenever black people look at another black person and start that looks like a gorilla and monkey bullshit their opinions are scratched off my list immediately. :hmm:

You are probably right ... but those are people that may already view everyone who isn't Black as a racist so any and everything that is done about a Black person they will twist it around to make it racial ya know what I mean???

well...here i go again...going against the grain

i will further support my argument later if i ever get around to going thru some of my stuff from undergrad BUT...

when i saw the cover i chuckled sarcastically at that animalistic pose they had him in and how she was the exact opposite

according to him he said he was just expressing emotion and he took a couple of different shots and this was the best one...uh huh sure :hmm:

unfortunately...i have a headache right now so i don't feel up to getting too deep but in an advertising class we covered many techniques, biases and so on soooo here is something just off of looking at the cover

IF the cover shot was purely off of showing the best physique then y is most of Mr. James physique covered?
It's covered by:
-words
-his clothing
-his stance
- & Giselle
-you see no biceps (barely), no calve muscles...nothing like that

WHEREAS GISELLE
-has a wind machine that was able to press her dress against her body enough for her physique to come thru
-you see her calves, her arms and etc....

this pic also plays on stereotypes of men taking up more space versus women taking up less space

yeah some of yall are gonna say i'm trippin but ehh
-i had to read book and articles about it
-plus watched documentaries about it
-and was at a presentation from an African-American advertising firm and they talked about this

am i saying this cover was maliciously made this way...no, not at all...most of these techniques are sooo passed down that ppl just take them as the standard

I'll bet your moms didn't teach you to be so rude and classless. :smh:

I bet ur dad taught you everything in the world about cross dressing and getting you ready for ur operation so that you could release the female trapped inside "the it's body"......:D..............:hmm:

Ju, I agree...we had a long discussion on the main board about this a week ago, like Blunt said (unfortunately I have to agree, DAMN IT!). Say what you want to say, I don't hate myself obviously but you'd have to be pretty naive and oblivious to see the racial undertones of what the cover depicts.

Lets see, for one, there were a plethora of other photos besides this one that they could have used for the cover, some that were far better in taste and in quality I might add. You might counter argue that the pic is presenting the contrasts of the fashion world and sports world, but the fact that every other male that's graced the cover of Vogue (not that many) have worn a suit or something stylish. So say what you want, they did choose this pic for a reason, and there are covert messages that are spread throughout the media on a daily basis. This won't be the first or the last.

Last thing, it's partly his fault as well because he went through with the decision to do it. :smh:

I think that if you look hard enuff...racial issues can be found in anything whether they are there or not...I've seen ninjas find racial disparagies in the simplest of things that no one else had seen...

Okay, I get it. You're actually not very "bright" (or light). Just a silly, immature kid who REALLY thinks these types of lame, bigoted insults will actually hurt an adult's feelings. Little boy lost.

:smh:

Ju you make some valid points and having taught a class about sex and gender I'm well aware of these overtones and undertones however I dont see saying Lebron looks like a gorilla coming from Vogue editors...I do see other black people saying that and that's my concern.

To me it is just a mag cover of a mag I dont buy. If I was looking to analyze from a media perspective then maybe....but what image in the media is not open to such dissection? There is no such thing as value free media just as value free research does not exist imo.

Lol I know you don't hate yourself grasshopper and likewise I dont consider myself naieve or oblivious. I dont know why they choose the shots they choose and in this case I personally was not going to automatically make the jump that this was a subtle degradation of Lebron or Giselle.

C/S. The fact that we are all ingrained with bias to an extent both concious and subconcious is not really up for argument, but sometimes a picture is just a picture, isn't it? We weren't there and dont know why this pic was chosen, but I'm not going to assume that there was some nefarious racial play here. If anything VOgue took a chance showing a white woman and a black man on the cover like that...and not a black safe looking model- a big tall athletic black man with one of their pale skinny idols. Seems they had much more to lose than to gain. My 2.

harsh.
I didn't think anything of the cover in fact I bought the mag to see the new bathing suits. People will search for something to be angry about. Let them search. Let them be angry. Let them discuss. In the mean time we'll spend our energy on something more constructive and come full force when there really is something to be pissed off about.
