Help with DIVORCE brothas!!!!!

i tried to go thru an attorney here in new york , he charged me $3500!! for an uncontested divorce, shorty and i are mad cool But we decided to officially end it , no kids , no property ,no bank accounts nilch!! i need to find a cheap and and easier way than thru a a lawyer, some people charging $700 on villagevoice and craigslist but i dont know how effective or how long that is , we got married in new york, 10yrs ago, shit dissoleved quick but we never legally divorced now she wants to marry next dude and i gotta do it quick, HELP ME FELLAS!! i know new york recently just passed a no fault divorce but it doesn't go into effect for a few more months

Well you are mos def getting ripped if its uncontested. What you paid was a "retainer" fee. Do you have any property together house, kids maybe? If not then it should be around 700 or less.

I've noticed black folks do that Shit so Damn much. Whenever you split with someone you need to divorce asap. The other person is a liability attached to your name. If they fuck up their credit and refuse to pay in some cases the debtors can come after you. Say she kills some while driving, a lawsuit against her estate can include you, no matter how long you've been apart.

When my ex left I went straight to the lawyer and filed.

If your brother is comfortable he can go the pro se route, since his matter seems fairly cut n dry, but NYC attorney fees are fucking emblematic of the area...the former firm I worked reached the 1k billable hr rate for their Sr. Partners...no hate though The statutory fees for a divorce in NYS are under 700, the other costs are pure profit for the attorney, and for your phams case, his attorney will most likely edit a template form, and send you a bill and smile...yeah I am cynical when it comes to attorneys,...Hopefully can Jagu provide you a reasonable rate, and mitigate some of the costs.
