HBO: Insecure -- Season 5 Official Discussion Thread (Final Season)

It was introduced to us with balance.

Now it's like fuck y'all, this a woman's show.

It's always been a woman's show, we just got caught up in it. The creator is a woman, most of the writers are women, the music and fashion are geared towards black women. Insecure's sizable (and vocal) male audience is probably a surprise to everyone involved.

By your logic, than Power is a woman's show. And we shouldn't complain about it cause it's made by and geared toward women.

Ok cool.

You don't have to use my logic, just read this quote from a 2017 Rolling Stone article:

https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-...is-not-made-for-dudes-or-white-people-196932/

In creating and writing the show, this is not for dudes. It’s not for white people. It’s the show that I imagined for my family and friends. That’s what I think of when I’m writing the scenes.”

See now you about have me like "fuck a Issa Rae"

So to clarify: You make a show for women, but it is also relatable to men. So your Demographic has expanded past expectations.

So what do you do? You say fuck the male audience cause this show wasn't supposed to be for you. And you get rid of the only character who is not only male, but can verify the main character as being a piece of shit person. So with Lawrence gone Issa sins are out of sight out of mind huh?

That one quote you just put up has changed my mind about this show. And I may even stop watching it. You know since it ain't for me and all.

I understand the complaints about dude character being gone but it’s still early...let’s see where this season goes

Nah it wasn't like we are hoping he shows up later or something. She said before the season started Lawrence wasn't coming back.

Honestly probably hating on the low cause mostly all the stuff I remember from the season was a Lawrence scene.

nah I wasn’t implying that...just that they may introduce/develop new characters (I have a feeling the dude that beat up the fat guy in the car might become a prominent character) or add more dimensions to existing ones (daniel)

Bruh, it's just a TV show. If you don't wanna watch.... :dunno:

I think she's saying it's cool that dudes watch, but she's not going to compromise her vision just to accommodate us. In her mind, the show revolves around Issa and Molly's friendship, not a battle of the sexes sitcom. I don't have the demographics, but it's safe to say the viewers are mostly women. And yet dudes are basically saying, 'Issa, you need to center the show around us and what we want to see.' I don't know why #LawrenceHive didn't create a petition for a spin-off cause that's what they truly want.

On Insecure, the women are way more flawed than the men but some cats are still up in arms. Why don't they bring that same energy to TV shows that treat black men as an afterthought or barely a thought at all?

Hollywood is starting to become run by gays and black women. In fact Blackish is the only show I know ran by a black man.

So yeah Black women's portrayal of us is more important than ever.

So, I just caught up to Ep 3. And, the message is clearly that if you want to hang in this group, you better be about eating the pussai

I'm just not a fan of Daniel... like his shit doesn't make any fucking sense.

You get an opportunity to finally get a track heard by a successful artist...

Your boy who not only put you on but also works with dude made a suggestion based on his experience working with this artist...

And you decide to say Fuck all that.... "Artistic integrity" ... I'm going to do it my way.

and then you get mad when Issa justifiably calls you out on it.. DUCK TALES..

The loss of Lawrence this Season really became apparent this episode.... Besides Issa none of the other characters feel like fully formed people. It wasn't noticeable when the show looked to be about the effects on two people who were in a long term relationship that didn't work. When the show was split between Issa and Lawrence trying to define who they were in Love and Life without the other.

But without Lawrence it has straight up become a cheap knock off of Girlfriends.

Even down to Molly becoming the Joan like Black Female Lawyer.. who isn't appreciated at work. 3 Seasons in and I still don't know Shit about Molly.... outside of her love for her Mother.

Ugh on this ep

Can’t have a chic in my bed and we ain’t fuckin, nope don’t care.

Issa just doin shit to do it, job shit

That bitch stealin clothes lol

Sade at the end, best part.

I guess Daniel is supposed to be Lawrence’s replacement.... and I just can’t understand his character.

He lets Issa stay rent free and he can’t fuck
He backstabs the guy that brings him an artist and attention

Sidenote: How the fuck does Daniel afford to live in a house like that in LA and he hasn’t been put on yet?

Yea Daniel is frustrating. Issa said it best. Get on then do you. Neptunes didn't start off doing shit like Happy. They gathered a following slowly and THEN they could experiment all they want.

House like that? It looked like a small one bedroom apartment to me. When Issa was cleaning up it was a lil small apartment kitchen she was cleaning

Even those are expensive.... plus he had a music studio in there. It couldn’t be an apartment, because there was no number on the door.

Yeah I was also trying to figure out how the man makes money.

To me it always appeared that Daniel was supposed to be like Brothaman from Martin.. He would make an appearance every once in awhile, but he was never meant to have any significant time given to him.

Daniel is just a Blank character...

Molly- tripping. You just started working there. Wait a minute. this ain't your old firm even if things were different wait and see which is better before you judge.
Issa - knows damn well she should work for beat street or whatever but too shook to just go on ahead and apply and leave we got yall. what daniel said was true, she got a job but she don't really care about the stuff she's doing cause they don't let her do stuff. just be the face of diversity.

Daniel is the biggest loser.
Issa was absolute right.
Khalil is in there. Khalil produces for the artist you been trying to meet. Khalil has placements. Khalil is in the game. Khalil listens to your track says yo this is dope but specifically if ti's for Spider this is what HE LIKES. Daniel is supposed to say OH SHIT THANKS MAN. Then adjust his track accordingly because he's trying to sell it to Spider.
Instead he's on some this is "my music" and that's now how any of this works. It only works like that after you've made a huge name for yourself or if you're making the music for your damn self.

Daniel needs to either get a fucking grip and not throw away a golden opportunity which is what that whole shit is with Khalil.. I mean he put you in the room in the studio with the dude you play the track and spider likes it from then on you and spider build a relationship and then go from there.

or you do what he did and burn a bridge with khalil off top who won't ever do you no favors again smfh

Remember the club scene in episode 2 between Daniel and the two chicks? He makes a passing comment about not selling weed anymore. I'm guessing that's how he supplemented his income as a soundcloud producer.

When Daniel made that comment it didn’t make sense to me because weeds been legal in Cali...

People go to the store for that shit anyway, he couldn’t have been makin no real money off weed to supplement a house in downtown LA

he could have before it became legal we don't know how long he been living there.
He def made enough to have his house that car and pay for that studio time. and all that equipment he has so he did SOMETHING.
and he is plugged with hella unsavory characters

Not gonna talk about episode 4 until Sunday night but MAN I need to know where all their songs are coming from. This year has a dope selection.

There is still money in the weed game here. The dispensaries tax weed too much and the quality is lower than good street weed.
So i've heard.

Daniel really symbolizes the male ego. In his heart, he thinks he is better than Khalil and should be giving Khalil advice regardless of their levels of success. Even though Issa is helpful with her support and guidance, he needs homies who will give him a reality check.
"Your beats are nice, but you ain't as hot as Khalil. People like his beats better. You should take his advice."
