Halo was the game that made the original Xbox; it was the one thing the PlayStation 3 still lacks - the game that defines the playing experience. While there are a lot of good games out for the Xbox 360, including Halo 2, it will be Halo 3 that will possibly go the farthest to define the power of that platform. Halo 3 is one of two games enabling Microsoft to push the limits; the other is Shadowrun, which will directly connect PC gamers to Xbox 360 gamers.

Both of these games are, if you will excuse the term, game changers. Halo 3 is the first massive multi-player on-line game for the console and Shadowrun the first to connect PC gamers and console gamers together for online play (though it is limited to a max of 16 in-game players at a time).

Changing Game

Designed from the start is voice capability. While not new to console gamers, most of us who play MMOGs on the PC side have had to use teamspeak, or some other out of game technology, to use voice. Getting an entire team on TeamSpeak is rarely possible.

Voice adds a great deal to combat in that you don’t have to stop to chat and it is much easier to give commands or warnings verbally then it is to type them on a keyboard. One interesting side note is that on a panel I had last year on gaming, the reason game developers didn’t put voice into MMOGs was because of the number of men who liked to play female characters and felt the male voice spoiled the experience.

Having played with TeamSpeak and a few guys, I can tell you it is rather disconcerting to suddenly find out the girl you have been playing beside isn’t a girl after all. It will be interesting to see whether the guys playing girls get the tools necessary to either make them sound feminine, choose to play as males or simply make believe they have deep, sexy voices. Personally, I’m hoping for the middle choice. :)

For a console MMOG, the huge advantage is that you can push the hardware to its limits. This is a problem with PCs where you have to assume the lowest common hardware base, which may be a modem and a Pentium 3 with old graphics. With Halo 3 the game developers can rely on the fact that gamers are on broadband, have Xbox 360s and all have the same controllers. This means we should see things in this game we rarely see on PCs, short of the new DirectX 10 Vista stuff that we are still waiting for.

This should give us powerful visuals and much quicker, console-like game play, which will be a new experience for MMOG players. The fact that everyone should be on broadband should reduce network lag but I’ll bet, when there are a lot of folks shooting in close proximity at the same time, lag will be nearly impossible not to feel.

Still, both games appear first rate based on early reviews and they provide a level of play the other consoles, and most PCs, can’t deliver right now.

Can Sony and Nintendo Keep Up?

Nintendo is playing to the beat of a different drummer right now and I don’t see these latest efforts from Microsoft having much impact. Nintendo is more physical and tends to play to a younger crowd. Nintendo also has a very attractive price point so they should be able to sleep easy while continuing to enjoy an impressive sales ramp.

Sony is in trouble if these games take off. They don’t even do multi-player that well yet, MMOGs are well out of their reach and they have effectively blocked every attempt their PC unit has made to work with their game platform. This creates the very real possibility that Sony PC users will be more likely to choose an Xbox 360 over Playstation 3 if they want to experience cross-platform play.

This is the same with the Media Center - the Xbox will extend a Sony Media Center but a Playstation will just treat it as another PC with limited capabilities. This seems like they put interdivisional rivalry in front of competitiveness and that’s just silly. And, if Shadowrun is good, and it looks like it is very good, that’s also going to hurt Sony a lot.

Next Steps

There are a number of Xbox derivative products that are likely coming. Xbox has no mobile solution yet, which is a likely future product. In addition to the PC, vendors have been asking for a seat at the Xbox table and with the advancements in emulators and virtual machines, coupled with some impressive performance capabilities from next generation PC platforms, this is increasingly possible. They could also do a stripped down Xbox, which would have the multimedia capabilities but not play games, or license the interface to someone else who could bring one of those qualities out.

The advantages a software company has are flexibility and hardware partners. With these new games and the most recent Instant Messaging announcement, they are in fact showcasing that flexibility. Next, prepare for them to start using their other advantage over the next 18 long months.

Halo 3 can certainly put the 360 way ahead of the PS3 but if this game isn't mind blowing then it can also hurt the system.

Halo 3 had better be a completely new experience and not just the last chapter on the series.

what does this prove, again?
It proves that Sony fanboys don't read or seem to know shit about the consoles they religiously drop money on. Microsoft and Nintendo are both giving the consumer what they want and need and actually listening! Meanwhile, arrogant assed Sony who knows they will sell consoles on just the name "Playstation" has royally fucked themselves this time around. Most gamers are gettin smarter these days and actually learning somethings about the gaming hardcore and development news before just blindly buying into hype. Meanwhile the few mindless drones still walking around buy into the hype without any research or working knowledge of what the hell they're buying.

I dont even trip on these types of threads anymore like I used too. its funny because while the bots have been continuing to post these threads about how ps3 is this or that, I have been thoroughly enjoying my ps3 and therefore too busy to even notice.

everyone who wanted a 360 already has one , Halo 3 will not make anyone go out and buy a 360.
everyone else is just waiting for a PS3 price drop
Lair may speed things up

WTF are you talking about? Lair:lol: every one knows that their are 2 games the sell systems. Halo and GTA. If Microsoft release Halo in September and GTA gets released in October what system do you think most gamers are going to pick up?

there you go , living in the past. you need to think about the future and the NEW innovative games a NEXT gen console is suppose to have. Halo kept the xbox barely alive last gen and GTA did its thing last gen but people are looking for something new.

dude..lair is going to rock, i thought it would flop but they've put a lot into that and heavenly sword ... most people who have a ps2 are waiting for the price to drop and bill gates even said "if sony made bricks people will buy it" so that lets you know people will buy the system..

both systems have their flaws.. i dare not talk about how you have to pay for live to play multiplayer  luckily like i stated i got that 3 month trial thingy

psn has yet to launch the home beta , games are starting to roll in and ..only a fool would think the ps3 is done but i'm tired of beating that horse
the price drop will be here when the time is right and sony is laying low like they did with the ps2 when it was supposed to be a flop..

when exactly was Nintendo giving the consumers exactly what they wanted??? Was it during the late 90's? Remember when games were going cd rom what company again refused to go that route and end up hurting their sales???? While they were still releasing games on cartridges, Sony was able to take advantage of Nintendo ignorance to advance with times.

During their game cube days this was the same company that hurt their system with third party developers and actually said "that games are not interested in playing games online" read EGM this is what they said.

Where was Nintendo doing their research???? Why did they refuse to appeal to the online market or the young adults by offering online services. They had the games "Mario Party Mario Racing and Animal Crossing" those games would have been great online or why was Nintendo refuse to go the route with mature games?? Gamers are no longer just 10 11 or 5.

Fanboys??? if it wasn't for Nintendo fans boys they would have been bury next to Sega.

and as someone said I don't give a fuck if it's XBOX SONY or Nintendo I will support whatever gives me the best games.

"We've sold 10.4 million, but the stat you may not have heard is that over half of those sales are from people that didn't own an Xbox 1... So there're lots of new people coming in, which kind of surprises you. What we're actually finding is that our customer set is broadening, which we think is important."

A video Game system should not cost more than $500. A cell phone should not cost more than $400 tops. When you bring a system to market that is $600.........and it comes to the table with no killer Ap exclusive, u just commited suicide.

No one gives a good god damn about Blue Ray Vs HD-DVD, we want to play good games, thats it thats all.

Gears of war, as a game had more Sales $$$ than the ps3 system. Id love to see the numbers that MAss Effect will produce when It drops. Id say look for Zelda'ish type sales.

Bottom line, there is no PS3 exclusive that warrants a $600 purchase. Plus the game pads dont even have Rumble/shock (at the moment) WTF????

I don't know that Halo 3 will put the 360 ahead of PS3 any more than it already is. Last generation, there weren't that many people who owned both a PS2 and and XBOX; they were two different audiences completely. The gap this generation is not as wide, but I still feel like people who are going to get Halo 3 either already have a 360 or never planned on getting a PS3. I don't know what stats they have to prove that the majority of 360 owners are people who didn't own an XBOX. I find that hard to believe. Cmon, more than half of 360 owners didn't have an XBOX. So if that is true, then it also means that most of your original fan base has yet to hop on board. I still want to know if the 10 mil sales figure is just XBOX owners re-upping or not, because that is a huge factor in the long run. PS3 is doing much better than most care to admit and it will only get better when games like MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Lair, and Killzone drop. Of course the 360 has highly anticipated titles coming this year too, but lets not act like Halo runs the game industry. Even more, PS2 owners who now have a 360 are not guaranteed to buy Halo when it comes out, I know I'm not. If and when the time comes and I'm proved wrong, then so be it.

I came into this thread just to say this, but I'm glad someone beat me to it. Get the fuck outta here with the 360/PS3 debates.

PS3 = better hardware

360 = better library

just like the last generation of consoles, except swapped.

Thats my opinion. If you dont agree, thats cool. I'm not forcing anyone to believe me. I don't have stock in either company.

IF thats not a nail on the head if I ever saw it.

eh......i just want halo 3. and you can claim what you want, but like someone says, its all bout games homie. the GAMES. i got an xbox solely for halo 3. and i'm sorry but its going to sell an amazing amount of copies. its being anticipated like the next star wars or something of the sort. as for ps3, when that new ffVII comes out thats supposed to basically be in the style of advent children, you can bet people are going to buy that system too. why? strictly for the title. if a game is well made, regardless of what system its on, the game will sell as well as the system. end of story.

FALSE

"Since its initial release, Halo 2 had been the most popular video game on Xbox Live, holding that rank until the release of Gears of War nearly two years later. for the Xbox 360 .By June 20, 2006, more than 500 million games of Halo 2 had been played and more than 710 million hours have been spent playing it on Xbox Live; by October 30, 2006, this number rose to four billion."

"The game sold 2.4 million copies and earned up to US$125 million in its first 24 hours on store shelves, thus out-grossing the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as highest grossing release in entertainment history."
