Things to consider with "boutique rounds"
Everybody has .308, .223 and .556. You can easily borrow from a neighbor or discover in a SHTF scenario if necessary.
- How accessible is the ammo is always key?
- Expense of ammo?
- If the proverbial SHTF how likely are you to scrounge around and find .458 SOCOM if your ammo supply is depleted?
- Does this round serve as a specific tool for a specific mission?
If you like the gun buy it but not as a go to fighting tool!

Anybody here have any combat trigger time with the SCAR 17? I think some spec ops units use it?
This video below gave me pause about buying one. Its Seals speaking about their combat experience and use with it.
Has anyone experienced any of the problems they mentioned?
I was considering FN scar 17s or Noveske N6:

1st of all most "Operators" are not trying to clear a house with a 7.62 battle rifle. The concussion in an enclosed space will be deafening. Not to mention that in a little mud hut, it would bring down the walls. 2nd, the thumb getting caught is operator error for not training with a new platform properly. Many newer rifles like the CZ Bren use reciprocating charging handles and with proper training, there are no issues. 3rd, the "numerous" failures that they say are documented....what are they????? It's too big? Come'on man!!!! The rifle doesn't weigh significantly more than any other 7.62 battle rifle. It was built to be robust and can take the abuse of battlefield conditions and still function. Oh, I had some failure to feed or double feed issues. The platform prefers a heavy grain bullet with plenty of powder to drive and cycle the carrier. A simple adjustment of the gas port and it will cycle light loads. And, the "guy's in the field don't like them" is bull. If that was the case, then why are Spec Ops units buying more of them? These units can procure their own weapons and are still choosing the SCAR and HK's. I have over 8k rounds thru my personal weapon with none of the failure that these guys are hinting at. I fired the first 1k with the rifle right out of the box uncleaned.
I didn't notice that shit til u said somethingI didn't even notice it was a flip-flop and not a holster...LOL!

No live combat as I am retired. But I have trained with active guys and contractors that are or have been in the field with this rifle and none have reported any serious issues other than the rifle is a beast on optics and it takes some trigger time to adapt to the platform when coming solely from M-4 and AR type rifles. My personal rifle, I have fired at an indoor range and in a shoot house with double hearing protection, it is LOUD. I only shoot indoors suppressed.Hey BROTHER,
Thanks, for that quick and concise review. It was helpful.
Is your trigger time behind the Scar 17 all range and training classes or is any combat time involved?
I have seen a couple videos with spec op guys stating they were using the Scar 17 in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wondered about the clearing homes and buildings with the .308 and how letting it off was inside buildings?

I am running a Steiner M536 on my rifle right now. I moved my Elcan to the SR25. I also have a Nightforce that I run when I want to stretch out past 600. I ran a Primary Arms ACSS 4x16 for a while, but it eventually failed. Tried the Trijicon Accupower but did not like it. Also broke a Nikon and an old Eotech 516 (It was already banged up and got it replaced and didn't test it after that). Basically, you want a good quality scope with a good warranty. The mounts can have some effects on the optics. However, I have seen some cheap mounts outperform some name brand. IMy personal preference would be ADM or LaRue mounts.Brother,
I forgot to ask about the optics issue? I have heard the Scar will kill your optics? What have you experienced?
Do recommend the red dot over a 1 x 4 Elcan?
How much do you think the proper or improper mount factors into this?
What kind of glass are you running?

I have some trigger time on quite a few HK's including the 416 and the G36 but I do not have any of their rifles in my personal collection since I sold my SL8 years ago.
Yep and it is really manageable...good for some social work!
And examples such as....Very nice, my only critique would be the choice of lights. Both the Mag lite and the Nstar weapons mounted. There are many better low cost, high lumen lights, to illuminate things that go bump in the night.
BROTHER,
"I am running a Steiner M536 on my rifle right now."
That's a nice piece of glass! Do you have any feed back on the glass?
Great Scope! Lots of light transmission and very clear glass. Built like a beast. Accidently dropped from about 8 feet and still held zero, just scuffed it up a bit.
"I moved my Elcan to the SR25. "
Knights makes a great rifle. I really want a SR-25 but is on the ban list hear in CALI. When I move out of state this is my 1st purchase. The SR-15 is also on the ban list.
But the way around the Sr-15 ban is kats purchase a SR-30 lower and add a SR-15 upper. I got 2 with a 14.5 and 16 upper, I run aimpoit T2 on both
Love the SR, but I shoot my Sig more. The wife shoots the SR when we go out together ( she wanted the Elcan).
"I also have a Nightforce that I run when I want to stretch out past 600."
Damn, that's great to have a place readily accessible to go out to 600+. And you shooting supressed, BROTHER you got it made.
I have to drive almost 2 hours for a range capable of that distance.
We have friens=ds with some property that we shoot with. We are moving north next year and may not have that luxury anymore
"Eotech 516 (It was already banged up and got it replaced and didn't test it after that). "
I have never owned an Eotech. I have heard mixed things from user.
Eotech got a bad rap with the recall for temp failures that only happened in extreme heat. I have had several and still own 2. I think they are great quality and would not hesitate to buy one.
"Basically, you want a good quality scope with a good warranty."
Agreed
"The mounts can have some effects on the optics. However, I have seen some cheap mounts outperform some name brand. "
I have experienced that a few times
"My personal preference would be ADM or LaRue mounts."
I use Larue and JP on most of my rifles.
ADM makes a great mount also.

What do you think about the 416?
I have no HK rifles only a few pistols and shotguns.
The 416 is a sweet rifle, but not for me. I have a couple of AR platforms that I would choose over it but that is my subjective opinion.
BROTHER,
Do you ever go out beyond 600+? Do you ever get into the 800 - 1000+ yards range?
What do you have as a long distance solution or recommend (.338 Lapua, .300 WinMag, 6.5 Grendel or Creedmor)?
I recently bought a .300 WinMag but have not put any glass on it yet or even shot it.
I think they are joking with the flip flop, but that is a silencerco osprey suppressor on a FNX45. The suppressor is supposed to fit in some holsters though. Its not round and shaped like a slide.Highly impratical rigg! Purely for hollywood movies and "rap" videos that are not trying to be factually correct.

Guess what I got...
And examples such as....
Not as often as I would like but I have taken my Scar out to 1K with the help of a spotter (Pretty good holdover and a crosswind). I have a bolt action SPR that is money at 1k if I do my part. I have shot .338, 30.06, WinMag and 6.5 Creed out to that range. If I had my choice it would be either a .338 or a CheyTac but they are expensive to shoot. I am hoping the wife takes my hints and gets me an HCAR for Christmas. I love 30.06!. 6.5 Creed can hit 1k but I have only attempted it twice. I have shot a 6-8 inch group at 800 but we did not have time properly sight the rifle in before shooting. Hit steel at 1K but I am sure I could get better results with some time on the range. I have not shot the Grendel past 2oo but I am sure it would be great at 6-800. Not so sure at how it would be past that. You can't go wrong with any of the big rounds, but they get expensive to shoot so practice can be limited if you are on a budget. I have a ex-Marine that reloads WinMag for me and does a custom 168g 308 round for my SPR.
