Google has made the source code and software stack for Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) available for download on the Android Open-Source Project git servers. This means companies and developers who are working on their own devices based on the new version of Android can officially get to work.

"This is actually the source code for version 4.0.1 of Android, which is the specific version that will ship on the Galaxy Nexus, the first Android 4.0 device," said Android Open-Source Project software engineer Jean-Baptiste Queru said on Monday. "In the source tree, you will find a device build target named 'full_maguro' that you can use to build a system image for Galaxy Nexus. Build configurations for other devices will come later."

This release also includes the full history of the Android source code tree, and therefore includes the source code for the Honeycomb tablet-only builds.

Honeycomb deviated from Google's culture of releasing an open source version of Android's code and stack, and then releasing the "with Google" version, and was never really released as a standalone open source image.

Queru said "Since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want everyone to focus on Ice Cream Sandwich. So, we haven't created any tags that correspond to the Honeycomb releases (even though the
changes are present in the history.)"

OK, I am sure there is a few people who have no idea what this means, but basically Source Code is needed to properly create ROM's for Android.

If you have a ROM for Android 2.x then they were probably build on Source Code, like Cyanmodgen. Mostly phones are built on this version, but some crappy tablets are as well. Like the ViewSonic G Tablet.

For Android 3.0 Honeycomb they never released source code, so everything was more hack'ish. If you have a Asus, Acer, Motorola, Toshiba, or Samsung tablet it is probably built on this version. This version is very smooth.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is built on Android 3.0 for tablets but is designed for both tablets and phones. So it replaces both Android 2.0 and 3.0. If you have not seen the new features in Android 4.0 hit up youtube and there is a bunch of videos including any vids for Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

I honestly don't see the hype behind this.

Is this impressive for people that aren't technical who think they are technical because they have a smart phone?

Ha jking or am I? :dunno:

I'd like to tinker with Android 4.0 but... you will need 16GB of memory to compile it.:smh:

damn times have changed. remember when you could compile
linux source code with a 350mhz cpu and 512mb ram, sometimes
lower.

EDIT

just read the article. if you don't have the ram make sure you have plenty disk space
and something else to do. the large ram is to hold the all the code and binaries in memory
so it goes faster. swap while slower will work.
