Google Pulls Huawei's Android License After Trump Blacklist

Following a blacklist order last week from US President Trump, Google is reportedly ceasing business with Huawei entirely. According to the report, future Huawei devices won’t have access to any Google services, including the Play Store.

Reuters cites a source close to the matter which claims that Google will “immediately” cease business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and/or software products. This means that the Google Play Store, Play Services, and collaboration within the Android operating system itself will no longer be available to Huawei.

Apparently, specific details are still being discussed by Google internally, but this effective ban would limit Huawei solely to using the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). For future Huawei devices, the Play Store wouldn’t be supported, and Google’s own apps such as Gmail or Chrome won’t be available either.

Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses… Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app.

Huawei will continue to have access to the version of the Android operating system available through the open source license that is freely open to anyone who wishes to use it. But Google will stop providing any technical support and collaboration for Android and Google services to Huawei going forward, the source said.

Google apps and the Play Store may end up disappearing from Huawei devices

From the looks of it, current Huawei devices won’t be immediately affected by this change. The Play Store and Google’s applications will still work on those devices. However, future releases even sold outside of China won’t include any of Google’s apps or services.

Eventually, though, this could affect devices that have already been sold, as future Android updates – such as the promised Q updates – could see trouble with Play Store access. Notably, it would also imply that Huawei won’t end up releasing another Wear OS device.

In any case, losing Google’s various services as well as its support in Android is going to be a major blow to Huawei’s smartphone business. The company has previously mentioned that it has an operating system in the works that could replace Android on its devices, but even that would be a major drawback for customers. After all, it was called a “worst-case scenario,” and now it looks like it’s come true…

Jump on the "White Nationalist" bandwagon if you want to but you might need to pull out your copy of Sun Tzu "Art of War " and read it again.

Trump is fucking up, and google is only doing this to comply with operating in business as an American corporation obligations.

Chinese corps and others will fuck around and make a viable global competitor to Google and then what?o_O:hmm:

Point being China is adversarial in business with the U.S. but both countries are tied at the hip economically, but bite the hand that feeds you and you will be hungry!

Shits not thought out well or in the best interests of the future.

China was already shitting on Google with their internet restrictions. The biggest search engine in the world couldn't even penetrate the Chinese market. That's Chinese government mandates doing that. Chinese says fuck you getting into our market, but wants to flood everyone elses. Trump's a dummy with the tariff shit, but like I said in another thread about the trade war, he might just make China adjust based on how unpredictable and wild he is. It sounds crazy, but China needs the US market too.

Huawei confirms it has built its own operating system just in case US tensions disrupt use of Google’s Android
  • A previous US ban on Chinese telecoms equipment maker ZTE from using American products and services served as a reality check for China’s technology ambitions
  • Huawei says it would only use its own OS in “extenuating circumstances”

Huawei Technologies, the largest smartphone vendor in China, said it has developed its own operating systems (OS) for both smartphones and computers, which can be used on its devices in the event that current systems provided by US technology giants are no longer available.

The Chinese company has developed a proprietary OS as tensions between the company and the US government could impact the availability of US-made operating systems used on Huawei devices, Huawei’s mobile chief Richard Yu Chengdong, said in an interview with German publication Die Welt.

Yu’s comments confirm an
earlier report
by the South China Morning Post in April 2018, which revealed the existence of a years-long project to build an alternative to Google’s Android OS. Huawei started building its own operating system after a US investigation into Huawei and ZTE Corp in 2012, a person familiar with the matter said in the report.

“We have prepared our own operating system, if it turns out we can no longer use these systems [Android], we will be ready and have our plan B,” Yu said in the interview.

A previous US ban on Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE from using American products and services served as a reality check for China’s technology ambitions. Google’s Android and Apple’s proprietary iOS have a stranglehold on smartphone operating systems, accounting for 99.9 per cent of the global market, according to Gartner estimates last year.

“Huawei does have backup systems but only for use in extenuating circumstances. We don't expect to use them, and to be honest, we don't want to use them,” said a Huawei spokesperson on Thursday. “We fully support our partners' operating systems – we love using them and our customers love using them. Android and Windows will always remain our first choices.”

Although there has been a long line of developers and operating systems seeking to break the duopoly – Microsoft with its Windows Mobile OS, Samsung Electronics with its Tizen system and Nokia’s Symbian platform – Android and Apple’s iOS still have a virtual duopoly today.

Having an alternative OS has likely taken on added urgency though for Huawei amid escalating trade tensions between the US and China. Huawei, the world’s biggest telecommunications network equipment supplier, is also facing a string of charges from the US, including that the company stole trade secrets, violated economic sanctions and concealed its Iran business dealings via an unofficial subsidiary.

Huawei has vehemently denied the US charges.

Huawei confirms it will sue US government in bid to overturn ban on its gear
Huawei could face more severe repercussions than rival ZTE if it is found guilty of violating sanctions on Iran, industry watchers have said, because the US political climate has become more negative and wary of China’s technological and economic ambitions in the past year.

The export ban which blocked US vendors from selling components to ZTE forced the Shenzhen-based company to shut down its entire operation for nearly four months last year as most of its products, including smartphones, are based on key technologies supplied by US vendors.

Huawei, currently the largest smartphone brand in China and engaged in a fierce battle with Cupertino, California-based Apple for second spot in terms of global smartphone shipments, equips all its smartphones with the popular Android system, owned by Google, and its laptop products with Windows OS, owned by Microsoft.

Meanwhile Huawei on March 7 announced it has filed a lawsuit against the US government in a bid to overturn the US federal ban on supplying its gear to federal agencies under the country’s National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA).

its pretty fuckin ironic the minute this company outsells iphones..

all hell breaks loose...

The iPhone has never outsold Huawei though. They have been the #2 worldwide phone company for a long time. Outside of the US, iPhones aren't even close to being #1.

As the govt did with ZTE, they will ease restrictions and all will be well eventually.

I wish them good luck with that.

I'd be willing to wager that they won't do anything but complain until Google allows them to use Android again.
Yeah, it could go either way, but I doubt China has an answer for worldwide usable OS right now. It took years for Google's operating system to rival Apple. Microsoft said fuck it, Blackberry said fuck and an operating system is not some simple let's find a quick alternative solution.. Everything is linked in that ecosystem from email to the cloud, whether you use Android or Apple. People aren't just going to replace that just because their phone doesn't have it.

Some years ago, there were reports that the NSA intercepts 100% of the telecommunications worldwide;
Is it possible that the rise of Huawei threatens this ability?

The US used to borrow $4billion a day from China... In fact, it is this sobering fact that ended
equally combative talk from Obama... If the US thinks it can fuck China, remember that the
Chinks have the means to seriously hurt the US dollar- they have not done it because they
would hurt themselves in the process as well

A lot of factors go into that. Their protectionist rules, large population and general Chinese loyalty to their govt is strong so they can have Chinese only market everything and it works. The US got lulled into thinking China just produces the rinky dink Walmart shit, but now they are coming for the bigger industries like auto and we are realizing how long we fucked up for. We're are service economy now and shit like auto manufacturing isn't safe anymore so it's panic time.

They are in so many different prospects, China has been a problem for a while, Americans are just now becoming aware of it... But the damage may be too much to recover from....

I think we're too late, they've infiltrated every aspect of our lives with their hardware.

I don't see how we fix the issue besides bringing back the majority of electronic manufacturing.
