Not sure if this is a repost or not but here's the story. The thing is action needs to be taken against Fox. A boycott of the station would be first and if that doesn't bring change then a boycott against the sponsors that advertise their products on Fox.

Fox News calls 'Obama Baby Mama' graphic poor judgment but Fox always seems to be the focal point to poor judgement. Especially when it comes to dealing with non whites.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US cable network Fox News found itself in hot water this week after referring to Barack Obama's wife as "Obama's Baby Mama" and asking if a gesture the Obamas exchanged was a "terrorist fist jab."

A graphic with the words "Outraged Liberals: Stop Picking on Obama's Baby Mama!" displayed Wednesday during a Fox interview about whether Michelle Obama has been unfairly targeted by critics sparked outrage from political commentators and set the blogosphere humming.

"Where do you even start when criticizing Fox's slur? Do you try to explain that 'baby mama' is slang for the unmarried mother of a man's child, and not his wife, or even a girlfriend?" Joan Walsh wrote on Salon.com, which spotted the graphic.

A top Fox official said use of the graphic showed poor judgment.

"A producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using this chyron during the segment," Fox's Senior Vice President of Programming Bill Shine told Politico.com.1

Fox, which Democrats accuse of displaying a right-wing bias in its coverage, earlier this week came under criticism for comments from one of its anchors.

ED Hill lost her show after asking on air if a gesture between Barack and Michelle Obama on the night he claimed the Democratic nomination was a "terrorist fist jab."

"A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist jab? The gesture everyone seems to interpret differently," Hill said ahead of a segment on body language on the June 6 edition of her afternoon news show "America's Pulse."

The knuckle tap exchanged by the Obamas just before she exited the platform where he was to claim the nomination at a packed arena in Minnesota on June 3 generated a flood of ink and air in the US media.

Commentators analyzed the second-long gesture, suggesting it was intimate, hip, African-American, never-before-seen among political power couples, or just plain lacking in decorum.

The Washington Post called it "the fist bump heard 'round the world."

The Boston Globe wrote: "The Obamas are proposing that the fist bump ... is the public-display-of-affection of change, the pucker-up of the future. And this, as much as anything Obama has espoused, is something of a mini-revolution."

Hill appears to be the only one knocked over by the fist bump.

Her show was dropped from Fox's afternoon lineup on June 10, but she was to remain at the network, where she is a ten-year veteran, in an as-yet unspecified capacity, US media said.

This is about the snide remarks Fox always makes when is addressing people that are not favorites of Fox or their interest. They don't play games like this when it comes to whites. It's the 21st century and we still have to deal with 19th century bigotry.

I'm trying to get in touch with Warren Ballentine since he was all over this matter this morning on his radio talk show. At that time he wasn't asking for any type action other than to call Fox News and voice your anger. I feel it needs to be taken further. However since this is an election year this maybe the only action thats deemed safe. You don't want to win the battle and lose the war.

Are you kidding??? They do similar, wise-ass things against the Clintons and other so-called "liberals." These types of right-wing folks always think it's funny to use black (or other) slang from groups they disapprove of (like gays) in a context that makes it look ridiculous. It's typical, and there's nothing you can do about it. Their audience loves that "blacks" (or gays, or liberals, or Hollywood ..etc.) are upset by it. They'll just grin and say you get back what you put out into the culture.

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

Thats ridiculous but why should only Black women be outraged??

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

I know I said black women (it should be all women) but black women are my main concern. What whites do and say about whites are of little interest to me (Blunt!). We however need to be more aware.

As I said earlier you don't see whites playing these games with themselves. Its time they stop playing them with us. Had Obama and his wife been white the statement would never had been heard.

OK here's the update on Ballentine's broadcast. The call did go out for a boycott of Fox and its sponsors. So the only thing that needs to be done at this point is to spread the word about what happened and why we're taking this action.

Actually, we all should be outraged. If being called Baby's Mama is derogatory then wouldn't that make its gender-opposite, Baby's Daddy, the same? Fox was merely directing its comments at a Black woman, Michelle Obama; but, what makes you think had it been addressing a Black male, it would have said anything different? - after all, the Black woman addressed is the wife of a Black U.S. Senator and presidential hopeful.

IMHO, we should never have injected the terms into pop-culture in the first place. Neither term engenders respect or family.

I am in total agreement. I always hated the term.

Your comments are always very insightful, Mo, and I don't say this one is any different. But be advised that this is nothing compared to what is to come. You have to remember what is going on here: a black man is a serious candidate to be the most powerful man on the face of the Earth. If elected, he could, if he wanted to, make entire civilizations disappear in a matter of hours if not minutes. This is in a country that has not quite come to grips with his full status as a human being. Have a little compassion for the ignorant- we do it on this board all the time. White folks just ain't runnin' shit like they used to, and they are absolutely fucking terrified. Let 'em call names, and laugh at the stupid mothafuckas. We have already won by getting this far.

I'm not saying it shouldn't piss you off. But those fucking idiots at Fox cannot hurt Barach and they cannot hurt Michelle- who have proven to be two of mentally toughest human beings you will ever find.

Nope, they can call Michelle a crack whore for all I care, because that's all they can do. Let 'em say that shit to his face, and I can guarantee they will be spittin' out fucking teeth. Barach has already warned them sons a bitches that if they keep up that shit about his wife somebody was gonna get dey ass kicked. They got it, ya'll; they got it. What I tell the young folks I work with is: a son of a bitch can say whatever the fuck he wants to. ONCE YOU WIN, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS POINT TO THE SCOREBOARD!

no double standard....at the end of the day it is poor and wreckless journalism

the ap has very strict guidelines on titles and how to refer to people (among other things)...the ap book of guidelines is the bible of the journalism industry and as a whole is considered the standard way of reporting

they know better:smh:

It's a "black"-oriented slang term, therefore it was used by FOX to refer to a black couple. Whites get slurred by FOX in different ways with different words. It's standard operating procedure for them (and others of their ilk). Did you just wake up?

(Fools around here had no beef with FOX and others when they were slurring Hillary and women in general. Try to be consistent, otherwise your "outrage" is just more noise.)

My only question would be what is the objective of "voicing [our] anger?" Black folks have been angry for a long time. That in and of itself gets us nowhere. No, having Obama elected President... THAT is a tangible outcome (though I fear it will not have the impact on American society that a lot of folks are hoping for).

I do not propose there be no response. If ya'll want some type of unified effort fucking count me in! Let's burn some shit down (that's how I roll, I want to do some shit that HURTS). But, honestly, why should we give a shit what a bunch of stupid rednecks say? Respect? Shit, we are disrepected every single fucking day in the legal and educational systems. No, I am not trying to wax pointlessly philosophical, but what I care about is fucking POWER. Obama represents absolute fucking power, and that's what these white folks are so afraid of. If you show them this hurts, all that happens is that they will keep doing it because what can you do to stop them? You think Murdoch gives a shit? He LOVES this kind of shit, because it's good for ratings.

Anyway, my 2.

I agree with you in particular the impact blacks are expecting should Obama win the election. Obama will have his hands full trying to correct the mistakes made at the White House over the past 12 years. Yes I'm including the last 4 Clinton years too. Obama is not our Moses who will lead us to the promised land.

That anger you spoke of must be channeled in a constructive manner. You don't let that type energy go to waste. To hurt a Murdock will take a unified constructive response. What's needed to grab the attention of a Murdoch? Attact him where he does give a shit, in his pocket. Ratings mean alot and if the ratings drop off so will his sponsors. No sponsors no Fox. The bottom line is all corporate America cares about today. That's the only way you control this type thing. Then we need to be consistent with our approach. Everytime they step out of line we nail them again. Why? Because we're still struggling for our equal rights.

Burning stuff down today doesn't work. It just gives the federal government an excuse to ignore regions that permit that type of activity to occur. Without that money regions suffer and fall behind. After the 1967 riots in Newark, NJ and Detroit, the government turned its back them for about 25 years. Newark has finally started to rebound but Detroit is still suffering and I wonder if Detroit will ever rebound.

As for what these rednecks are saying we need to care. Fox needs to be monitored and attacked when they step out of line. Remarks such as "Obama's Baby Mama" cannot be ignored because they nutrualize if not lessen what's been accomplished. The insult was subliminal most blacks won't see it or think anything of it. The Fox network has worldwide influence and what they say can and does influence millions.

I think Ballentine's objective is to simply establish a pattern showing the media (Fox) that what they say does matter, and that they will be held accountable for the content of their broadcast. Also it will keep black people on point to whats happening to them on social and political levels. Obama (for the most part) has the nomination and we all know we have a tendency to beome complacent. Now is not the time.

Fox needs to be under the microscope, they have as much sensitivity towards non white races as one has for a cockroach.

Well now you are talking about strategy and power, which is MY game, and I'm all for it. They only problem with what you say- and only in practice and NOT in logic- is that I don't see the type of concerted focus among us to pull it off. I was pleasantly surprised at the Jena, LA deal, because I would not have imagined 2007 Negroes capable of such an orderly and effective effort. Shows it IS possible, though.

I certainly hope I am wrong in my sorry opinion of 2008 Negroes, but I see what I see. I do, however, work with a lot of black college students, and can attest to there being some real soldiers out there- kids you can go to battle with when push comes to shove, even if they are a little too caught up in bling right now.

Great thinking, though. Count me in!

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

As an Obama supporter and volunteer, I am by no means defending the political right, but she did call Barack "My baby's daddy". This was an attempt by right wing nut, Michelle Malkin to make the Obamas seem far out of the main stream and in to the threatening to racist whites, Black so called "urban/ghetto" culture. My whole beef is that we as Black folk have embraced, legitimize and ignorance behavior that is clearly beneath us as a people. Slang referring to having children outside of marriage has now been taken as hip and without negative connotations when we are talking among ourselves, but when the racist use it, we get vexed. We all know that the racists don't and will never love us. When will we start loving ourselves.

lol it was working when I posted it....

See how shit is? When you have proof that this issue isn't a big deal, someone deletes it off youtube.

The whole notion that we should always be mad at fox news is losing me. For one, Fox news is the only major news outlet that is being critical on BOTH candidates. Secondly, because they are critical on Obama, Obama people has to find issues that would make Fox news look "racist". Thus, trying to destroy Fox's credibility in order to not have to argue the criticism. I mean what easier way to fuck over someone than make the public believes that Fox news is only out to get Obama because he is black?

In conclusion, stupid ass niggas will go make songs dissing fox news because of their emotional connection with Obama.

BTW, please do not get me wrong, Fox news has had some questionable people *like Mark Fuhman bitch ass*, however, they tend to argue all sides to be fair. This is why Fox news still have a large audience. Thus, why people wants to discredit it.

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

Faux does not argue all sides. Where is their reporting of Sarah Palin's addressing to the Alaskan Independence Party? They were all over Rev. Wright's 5 minute except of an hour long speech. How about Faux Snooze political analysis Karl Rove refusing to answer congressional subpoenas. They never questioned that. During Clinton's administration, Faux questioned why won't Clinton let all of his staff go before congress to answer questions. Does he have something to hide, was the not so subtle innuendo. All of Clinton's staff's subpoenas were answered and they all testified. Shall I go on? Faux is a front for the republican party. Never has a major television news network division been in the pocket of one political party. They are neither fair nor balanced. This is typical of actinanass's self medicated excuse making.

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

michelle obama called Barack her "baby daddy" long before Fox News called her anything, somebody posted the audio about 3 replies above...

Fox News is just a victim (this time) of how ignorant folks are to what is going on around them...I remember in college when this little "baby daddy" thing caused a little controversy, so when I heard Fox call her his "baby momma", I got the little crass joke, but I didn't see it as racist or negative...

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

They should have known to call her 'wifey'

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

What people fail to realize is Fox never really gives you objective news. Fox gives you it's views! Being a supporter of the far right most of what Fox says has an underlying purpose.

Regardless of Barack Obama's usage of the term "baby mama" you know Fox usage of the term had more of a slanderous intent. Most blacks accept being called niggas but what happens when a white person calls them a nigga? Fox has never been fair towards blacks or democrats. Hell Fox even had Palin winning last Thursday nights debate againt Biden. I'm curious what debate they watched that night. They saw something NONE of the other networks picked up upon.

We ignore too many subtle negatives it's time we said enough. These negatives are never used when whites refer to their own. They should not be allowed to use them when addressing us either.

dude, cnn and msnbc is known for backing up dirty democrats. Its all part of the game. Thus, I wouldn't be so mad at Fox News if other media outlets been doing it since the dawn of media. Fox news reacts to what other media outlets tend to "forget" to put out. This is how Fox news is an objective news source. If CNN, and MSNBC wasn't so bias over this election, or any other stories, we wouldn't have Fox news to gripe about. Thus, making your argument mute.

I don't think the statement *talking about baby mama* was negative. Hell, I know more white women calling themselves someone baby mama than actual black women. That statement is now a part of American culture.

About fox news, you have to take them for what they are. They are leaning to the right in most instances, however, they are objective due to how far left the other media sources has become. In fact, most of everyone in here only gripes about Fox news is because they are FAR LEFT. One thing about far left and far right, they tend to want to hear their points more than criticism. Meaning, you tend to think "since you not with me, you are this...". Which isn't the case all the time. My point is this, maybe since people views on this board is considered to be far left, perhaps everyone is overreacting to this story because of their political views? Just a question...

How can CNN be consider bias toward Obama? Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs and Now Bill Bennett? Their so called political analysis that support Obama are Paul Begala, who was a Clinton supporter before Obama eliminated her from the race, James Carvill another Clinton backer are reluctant Obama supports by default at best. CNN backs the Clintons heavily. Thus, why YOU are mad at them. Thus, proven my point that Fox has a right to do what they do. Same for MSNBC.

The staunch truth of this nation is that majority of the population of this country leans to the right. This is why Fox news is the highest rated cable news network in our country. BTW, black people watch it too.

BTW, because you are CHEAP/BROKE enough not to have MSNBC does not mean its not widely available. I guess the Obama campaign ain't paying enough......

Another thing, what cable company you have? I mean damn, I know charter and time warner *in the dfw area* carries ALL the major news outlets. It might be time for a switch Mr. Marx. OH WAIT, let me guess, your against capitalism too right?

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

I ended up writing an email to faux news for this one, mofos dealing in bushit connected and funded by the fact that this country is plunging into depression, deliberately leading to the fleecing of America. The depletion of the middle class, the worst mistake voters made, voting baby g.w.bush into office. We could have been mislead into trusting in the assumption of the American way, my good people have been brain washed and bamboozled, people vote and choose correctly, this could be our last chance...

You are one huge Faux Snooze, republican talking point. You mean those that watch cable news television lean right. As far as the made up talking point by Faux Snooze and the republicans that CNN is bias toward the Clintons, why was Bill lambasted by the media (wage the dog) while GW has still not been held to task for his incompetence. Example check out the hypocritical line this article takes. First he says the media was bias toward Hillary because they didn't take the same tact on the so called Norman Hsu scandal, but then they say that they are pro Obama. In retrospect, which is it?

The Swamp

by Glenn Thrush

The Clinton press folks have been saying for months that they receive far harsher scrutiny than Barack Obama, and Howie Kurtz has his suitably sweeping take on that in today's Washington Post. The piece hits all the points you'd expect -- her dip in the polls, for instance, was widely portrayed as a plunge, which it ain't.

Kurtz makes a convincing argument for the existence of a double-standard in the coverage (rooted in gender?). Clinton gets attacked for attacking, he suggests, while Obama got a free pass during 10 months of relentless, if decorous negativity.

Valid points, all. Kurtz glosses over the self-fulfilling prophecy angle , hammered by TNR’s Michael Crowley, who claims Clinton’s decades-old paranoia about the press creates animus that boomerangs on the candidate. (The flip side, of course, is that Obama’s press people cleverly play good cop with reporters to accentuate the contrast.)

The thing that really stuck out in Kurtz’s column was this utterly amazing assertion by Time.com’s Meta-Man Mark Halperin: "Your typical reporter has a thinly disguised preference that Barack Obama be the nominee. The narrative of him beating her is better than her beating him, in part because she's a Clinton and in part because he's a young African American. . . . There's no one rooting for her to come back."

Really? Who’s the "typical reporter?" As a card-carrying Typical who spends more time with Hillary Rodham Clinton than his family, I have never heard a print or broadcast reporter in the trenches express a preference for Obama, overt, thinly or thickly disguised or otherwise. (Anybody else notice that the rules for quoting anonymous reporters are even looser than the rules for blind-quoting political operatives?)

The assertion that "There's no one rooting for her to come back" is simply off-base. When Newsday wrote about the Hillary-Rudy fade earlier this month, a couple of NYC-based reporters called us to joke about how "screwed" the city media would be if Hillary and Rudy tanked. To his credit, Halperin focuses on "storyline" and not any baked-in anti-Hillary media bias.

In the summer, when fewer people were paying attention, the zeitgeist was all about a Clinton blow-out and it was nearly impossible to dent her armor no matter how damaging the revelation (Exhibit A: The non-existent impact of the Norman Hsu scandal). Now, the pack is devouring the red meat of "Is This the End?" So, the seminal question is more political than journalistic: Can Hillary create a new storyline? If we’re writing about "The Comeback Kid II" in two weeks, chances are she wins.

UPDATE: Ben Smith weighs in with an interesting point : that Chicago-land stories on Obama 's odd real estate dealings, which the Clintons say has been underplayed, have been too LOCAL to appeal to the national pack and therefore don't "have the same array of Beltway forces driving it." Counter question: Was Whitewater any less parochial?

Re: Fox News calls Michelle, "Obama's Baby Mama' Every black woman should be outraged

I mean majority of America leans right naturally. You wanna test this theory?

This is what you do.

Go to the main board, and ask everyone what they think about gay marriage. Ok..........after that, ask them what would they do if their family members decide to become gay and marry their lover...

Better yet, watch how people *on here, and in society in a whole* will react if their taxes went up substantially.

BTW, being conservative can mean more than just political. Technically, since I'm black *I have a myspace to prove it....plus witnesses on here*, and majority of black America supports democrats, would I be considered a progressive for thinking outside of OUR social norms? Point being, if majority of our people supports the same party, and is close minded to other point of views, would that make majority of black America conservative? If so, I could make the case that we *black America* is no different from white America in this instance. Then, that would prove my point that we can be as racist as the white man. Oh no!!! I forgot!!!!! We do not have the "power" to be racist right?
