Featured Instrumentation in Black Music..did rap kill the guitar/bass solo?

Wyclef brought Santana back years ago. Santana's extra long guitar solos killed it for everybody, even David Lee Roth got back with Van Halen in direct response. Neville Bros came back out and I'm not sure if R. Kelly hooked up with Mr Ron Isley first or at the same time.
Stestsasonic and Gangstarrr not really gaining a crossover mainstream audience that the Roots enjoy today is another reason cats said fuck live instruments. I think Jay Z's unplugged performances changed that greatly.

Although Har125lem made some great points, this could be "blamed" on Disco and watered down dance music in general. It was during that era producers and labels figured out that they could get the "same" (not really :smh:) results with machines, and not have to pay as many people. First it was the horn section, then the bassist, then the drummer, and if there was a decent keyboard effect for guitar, they'd have bounced his ass too! Once that puppy got past the screen door and tasted freedom, it was hard to get it back in the house. Sure, you'll have the Mint Conditions once every blue moon, but as far as the US is concerned, funk, soul, and R&B bands are a very hard sell. Look at the most successful black bands in the last 2 decades, and then tell me where they're from.

I don't know because you still had band groups up until the late 80's. I think the bigger issue was the mixing of R&B and Hip Hop.

What's funny is, while there have been a no. of R & B/Hip hop hits over the years...

...I hated MOST of it.

I like my hip hop RAW, and my R&B pure.

I think it started when damn near every R&B song had to have a rap part added in the middle of the song. Then the songs started sampling music rather creating its original beats then rappers started singing and doing slow rap songs.

next thing you know musicians are gone and R&B and rap were no longer in separate sections at the music store:smh::smh:

If you think about it, when disco was facing its blowback, they were putting R&B and disco in the same section in stores.

 @ everyone igging Zinger.
What can they say? I keep pouring it on with facts. I won this argument
long ago. You know it, they know it and I know it.

You know what the proof is? If I post the video of someone
really substandard, they come alive and pounce on me. But
if I post the vintage African music. There is nothing they can
say. The shame is with you, who says nothing about African
music, and posit here as if you too are a black American. Of
course I checked your ass when I posted the concert of Ferre
making your countrymen dance....

I think I'm most disappointed in the state of R&B and Soul (altho I've never really understood the difference between the two) for the last 25 years the music has taken alot of its cues from rap production and it sounds anemic and repetitive. :smh:

I'm gonna repeat what my 21 year old son said to me on a cruise ship 2 weeks ago: "I'm just going to lie to my kids and tell them that y'all's music was the music from my youth."

"Featured Instrumentation in Black Music..did rap kill the guitar/bass solo?"

I just had the same thought the other day. I was listening to Earth, Wind & Fire, when it made me wonder who was the modern equivalent.

Are there even any bands left on the charts or all solo artists now?

Understand, the move from analog to digital was a move from Soul to binary.... Soul music touches the soul and frees people of color (soul people) while binary is more like how the white man thinks and instead of freeing our souls in entraps us making us a slave to it...
This shit is a lot deeper than folks think and if your awareness and understanding is not high enough it will go way over your head..

And will it come back??

remember when black music had the guitar, bass, piano hell even FLUTE solo?? Remember when people used to talk about bootsie and jesse johnson and ernie isley?

when was the last time you heard decent featured instrumentation in popular black music? It seems like music serves the vocals rather than being a partnership.

Did rap music kill featured solo instrumentation in black music?

Are Africans not black???????

else you know...

Morrisman Smith - ATTENTION R&B SONGWRITERS Where are the Black Bands?

Here is one of my favorite youtube channels, this guy breaks down the chords in a lot
of old school songs. Plus dishes out advice and opinions. He recently had to take down
damn near half of his youtube video play alongs because of copyright complaints, but I
have learned a lot of cool chord progressions just by playing the old classics

More like digital is trying kill analog... But think about this we are the soul people or anolog people and the white man brain is digital, so whats happening to the music is really a microcosm of whats going on in the real world...
As we move from the analog to the digital the soul is lost, and the soul people are the ones who will pay the most...
But we cannot shift the trend because we are so emotionally invested and addicted to the all and mighty digital sound the all and mighty computer....

interesting analogy

There are still good black bands in the U.S., but most of us ignore them...or cats think they're wack.:dunno:

example: I think Janelle Monae's band is great. but I rarely see her get any love

Late 70's Early 1980's ,,, They Closed all the music programs in the schools. Said it was to save money and music programs was not important compared to math etc.
It took until the late 1990's for the Music industry to wake up and get music programs back in schools.

There is no excuse for this, if out there in Africa
where there is a shortage and a great cost of
everything, young Cappuchino LBG and his
band can do this
