I don’t agree with everything Joe says. Anyone who is in the market of capturing ears and eyeballs should be taken with a grain of salt.
I will say this in defense of some black people as far as knowing hip hop culture. Depending where you lived in the country, greatly diminish your hip hop knowledge. I remember going to Tuscaloosa AL to visit in the mid 80s from New York and they were a minimum of 10 years behind. Gotta rember before the internet, somes parts had no way of staying up with the hip hop way of life.
That's interesting. I grew up in Talladega County during that period, which is east of Birmingham whereas Tuscaloosa is west of Birmingham. I remember our local radio station and the black Birmingham stations would carry some of the Hip Hop shows from the New York stations. I explicitly remember Mr. Magic's show. My cousin in Connecticut would drop the latest stuff from NYC, but I never felt we were more than a few months behind.
But Yo MTV Raps really leveled the playing field, bringing NY and West Coast Hip Hop into every part of the country.
Yeah! In New York we had DJ Red Alert, Chuck Chillout at 9 to midnight every Friday and Saturday night. That's where you would hear the first up and coming rappers like Dana Dane, Slick Rick and UTFO etc before they became mainstream.
I could be exagerating about the 10 years but I do know they were behind. I remember they had never heard of Rob Base and I wore the RUN DMC Adidas gear and they looked at me like I was an alien.. Clothing like that "never" made there.
