i use android phones fool and yes to alot of apple users, instagram stopped being "cool" when it stopped being exclusive to apple. doesnt mean they stopped using it but it means it loses some of its cachet. it means their eyes are open for something new when before they were totally satisfied with what they had.

see: Instagram App Deepens Class Warfare Between Apple and Android Smartphones

also, instagram n twitter became alot of peoples social networks of choice after abandoning facebook and now instagram is owned by facebook.

its like ur favorite independent coffee shop getting bought out by starbucks. the coffee and shop may remain unchanged but it loses something to some people.

wanting to be a part of the "in crowd" is just a part of human nature. steve jobs made billions off understanding this better than everybody else in the tech industry.

:dunno:

i think the main thing that people like about instagram was that

a. you can easily apply filters to the pics to make them look more interesting. most of them give the pics a vintage feel.

b. it started out exclusive to iphone. most artists, writers, designers n photographers are on apple so u had a concentration of creative people sharing interesting shots.

just like how facebook started out w/ only harvard students...then only college students for a long time. that helped shaped the direction the site moved in. if they let housewives, 75 yr old grandfathers and little 14 yr old tyquan from down the block in from day 1, facebook would have been a totally different animal and may not have blown up to what it is today.

I'm surprised no one had mentioned how badly Facebook overpaid for instagram.. This is setting a bad precedent it's almost as if history is repeating itself (i.e. the .com bubble).

define "overpaid"

if twitter bought instagram, i bet that woulda been more than a $1billion problem for facebook.

Overpaid as in they were valued at $500 million. But like you said, it is a nice move that FB scooped them up before Twitter or Google did. Overall smart move on FB's part to continue to be the leader in this social era.

Value is a very relative thing.

People thought Google overpaid for youtube (me included at the time) but that ended up being a steal. Google now dominates video and youtube is actually the second largest search engine in the world defined by queries (most people dont know that)

Instagram is becoming the default photo button on smartphones. Also, it is becoming a social network.

Facebook is mainly used for sharing photos, they are weak on mobile, etc....

Instagram solves a lot of of their pre-ipo issues.

Again.. Instagram might not be worth a billion to say Microsoft... but for Facebook, it very well could be.

Mark didnt want to be Yahoo passing up on buying Google when they wanted to sell to them.... they didnt want to be Yahoo also passing up on Facebook (Semel balked at the billion dollar price)... so he decided to make a big bet... it was a defensive gamble but now their only major threat (from a startup perspective) is gone.

which is why Brothas should be trying to create CHEAP apps for cellphone, ipads, pc's, etc. Its not hard to do and it doesnt cost that much money. There was a thread created on BGOL a while back about creating apps......but I forgot the thread title.

If youre too lazy to learn the simple programming...then go to your local college...search for a hungry programming nerd thats short on cash...theres a lot of em trust me.....feed him/her your idea and pay them a little money to create the app. Thats what Im on right now. Just make sure the nerd is nothing like Zuckerberg....cause he might steal your idea....lol

I don't think FB overpaid for it at all. This was there first big acquisition and its not like the company is going to sell for exactly whats it's worth in 2-3 year it would have probably been worth well north of 1 billion so fb got one hell of a deal.

this is nothing new. There are at least 5 apps for android that do the same thing and more, but since it was exclusive to apple, people made a big deal about.

if thats the only thing that caused instagram to blow up then how come none of the android exclusive photo editing apps are seeing the same type growth?

Strong dedicated user base is the medium by which the monetary value
of this transaction was measured, and growth potential of that product imo
Instagram could have broke off to something like "instabook" just like the
flock of sheep left myspace they could overtime ditched FB. you find your friends from facebook
via instagram search, then that then becomes a Instagram database of new users to pitch stuff to.

Instagram was a growing threat to
facebook.

how could it be more simpler than whats done on android. you take a pic, immediately after, you have the option of editing or sharing. how much more simple can it get?

I get your point, but it seems that Instagram was the more popular app.

Funny enough I have never used the app. First time I tried and it wanted a username/pw, I dumped it.

I test practically every meaningful application that gets launched (on all platforms). I am pretty platform agnostic so to me it is not an android vs iOS thing. I have had Instagram on my phone since the launch. Although I really dont use it. I really could give two shits about photos, personally.

Instagrams gets you from opening the app to great looking image faster than any application on the market + it is combined with a huge and active community.

Where facebook takes 6-7 steps, Instagram is a one-two punch. There are other photo apps that have cloned Instagram, but it was the first with the one-two punch of filtered photos in really one step. Combine that with an engaged community... A majority of people just peruse the content.... and you have winner.

And those editing features are the same as those filters on Instagram.. those easy to deploy filters werent common two years ago and definitely no one did it as elegantly.

Im just telling you why people have adopted it man. Personally, I dont care either way.

i tried it too, to see what the hype was about. i spent a few minutes with it, i followed Bria and Lastarya and then after that day, forgot about it.

and it was more popular, because it was Apple exclusive (like siri). If it launched on all platforms at the same time, Apple users may have enjoyed it, but Android users would have probably thought it was similar to the other photo taking/editing apps. Android users only downloaded it to piss off iphone/ipad users.:lol::lol:

FB sucks on every platform, so we can forget about that.

If i take a pic with my default camera, right after, i have editing and sharing options. If i use a 3rd party app, like CamerZoom, there is no need to leave the app because everything is there.

I think the community is what made it what it is today. I dont mess around with the editing. I just take pics of ass i see on the street and share it to my home pc. Thats about it.

Eewwll in this bitch going ham.

All I know is, someone spent a billion, and I didn't get a dime of it.

I feel where you are coming from but let's be serious - Instagram isnt some unique idea (see Youtube/Facebook) nor is the user base "amazing" (30 million) so I just don't see it.. Finally, where is the revenue stream (same issue with Youtube)? I have the same exact issue with FB - they value themselves at $100 billion :hmm: that shit is laughable.. when the stock holders invest in $100 billion they will expect returns but how can FB deliver? Google/Apple can deliver because they generate an absurd amount of cash...

Facebook, Youtube, Google, etc ..none of them were unique ideas. They were all late entries in the market.

Being new is meaningless. Creating value and crossing chasms is what matters.

30 million in two years is unchartered territory. Ive been in this business for over a decade and you can count on your hand how many companies have done that.

In another year, they would have been closing on on 100 million and that is nothing to sneeze at.

They added 5 million android users in the first fucking six days. You cats sound clueless.

.

CamerZoom (PRO) is not even remotely as well made as Instagram. And you have to pay for it...nominal cost but an easier to use free product will always been a paid one.

Read this and you will understand homie http://gigaom.com/2012/04/10/instagram-me-love-at-first-sight

Again, I personally could give two shits about photos because I dont use my smartphone to take pictures... but Instagram >>> camerzoom by a country mile.
