Facebook Buys Instagram For $1 Billion

Facebook has just finished a deal to acquire mobile photo sharing app Instagram for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. Instagram will remain a standalone app from Facebook, but the services will have increasing ties to each other. The transaction should go through this quarter pending some standard closing procedures

Last year, documents for a standalone Facebook mobile photo sharing app were attained by TechCrunch. Now it seems Facebook would rather buy Instagram which comes with a built-in community of photographers and photo lovers, while simultaneously squashing a threat to its dominance in photo sharing.

At 27 million registered users on iOS alone, Instagram was increasingly positioning itself as a social network in its own right — not just a photo-sharing app. And it was clear that some users were doing more of the daily sharing actvities on Instagram rather than Facebook’s all-in-one mobile apps, which had to be cluttered with nearly every feature of the desktop site.

Instagram will gain massive design and engineering resources by joining forces with Zuckerberg, a big change after running as a famously lean company with just a handful of employees. Still, the deal to stay somewhat independent will allow Instagram to maintain some of its company culture.

which is why Brothas should be trying to create CHEAP apps for cellphone, ipads, pc's, etc. Its not hard to do and it doesnt cost that much money. There was a thread created on BGOL a while back about creating apps......but I forgot the thread title.

If youre too lazy to learn the simple programming...then go to your local college...search for a hungry programming nerd thats short on cash...theres a lot of em trust me.....feed him/her your idea and pay them a little money to create the app. Thats what Im on right now. Just make sure the nerd is nothing like Zuckerberg....cause he might steal your idea....lol

I'm still trying to figure out this android hate. Since when does growing your platform make an app uncool? Iphone exclusivity had its limits they wasn't going to get 100 million users with just iphones.People damn sure ain't stop posting on instagr.am from what i seen just cuz android users get it.

The other good thing is that is going to be a separate company and still be independent and they only had 10 employees. That shit amazes me just 10 employees.

There always has and always will be coolness in exclusivity.

Why all the hate for android users using it? All you Iphone users complaining some weird people.

Facebook be making moves. With Microsoft (windows phone) and facebook partners total domination will be here soon:yes:

There always has and always will be coolness in exclusivity.

You know what you make a very good point but it would be very hard to monetize the platform with just iphone. I guess you can compare it to when clubs hold the line then when you get into the spot the shit is dead.

 yeah. I don't have anything against android users. Shit, I used to be one myself. I've just always been the type that liked exclusive shit. When it gets too popular, I move on to the next thing. But as far as businesswise, yeah it was a smart move by instagram to add android users. I think they sold out too soon though. If they would've waited about 1 more year, they could've demanded at least 5 billion for it.

I think it was a smart move ... i believe they got some stock in fb as well. I don't think instagram will be worth 5 billion in a year hell i think twitter is around 8-10 billion and they have 5x the users. I could be wrong though but 100 mil per person is a nice chunk of change. 5 bil is a stretch they don't even have a way to monetize it yet thats atleast 6-12 months out.

Cash out while it's hot

Your an idiot... "coolness in exclusivity", this coming from a fool that loves Justin Bieber... It's a known fact that Iphone users are dumber then those on Android, so I'm guessing you have an iphone,

Oh no, the coolness is gone. What will you kids do now? Find a similar app with no Facebook ties? How will you share those daily "vintage" pics of yourself?

/Sarcasm

How does instagram work? I thought it was just like a twitpix or photobucket type of app.

Why is it so popular? When I go to ppl's twitter page and post a pic that's all it is.

Why are people going so crazy over it?

No doubt. But they clearly coulda held out for more. Instagram was dam near becoming the new FB itself.

Is the reason they had to shut that down and buy it, merge. Business!

That's what i was thinking because that's what it appeared to be so i never worried about it. :dunno:

Mike Krieger

Michael Krieger graduated from Stanford University, where he studied Symbolic Systems with a focus in Human-Computer Interaction. During his undergraduate studies, Krieger interned at Microsoft's PowerPoint team as a PM and at Foxmarks (now Xmarks) as a software developer.

Krieger wrote his Master's thesis on how user interfaces can better support collaboration on a large scale. After graduating, he worked at Meebo for a year and a half as a user experience designer and as a front-end engineer before joining the Instagram team doing design and development.
