ESPN's Chris Broussard calls homosexuality a 'sin' in segment about Jason Collins

In a segment on Monday about NBA player Jason Collins’ coming out, EPSN analyst Chris Broussard said that as a Christian he does not “agree with homosexuality” and implied that by coming out as gay, Collins is “walking in open rebellion to God and Jesus Christ.”

Broussard has come under fire for that comment, made on the network’s one-hour special episode of Outside the Lines, which focused on Collins’ essay in Sports Illustrated where he announced he is gay, becoming the first openly gay male major American professional sports player.

Broussard said on the segment that “true tolerance and acceptance is being able to… not criticize each other and call each other names,” before launching into his personal beliefs about homosexuality.

“If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says ‘you know them by their fruits,’ it says that that’s a sin,” said Broussard. “And if you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality — adultery, fornication, pre-marital sex between heterosexuals — whatever it may be, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and Jesus Christ, so I would not characterize that person as a Christian.”
In Collins’ piece published in Sports Illustrated (which, like Entertainment Weekly, is owned by Time Inc.), the Washington Wizards player wrote, “I take the teachings of Jesus seriously, particularly the ones that touch on tolerance and understanding.”

Broussard had previously written about his belief that homosexuality is a sin in a 2009 blog post. In that post, he stated that the NBA is “ready for an openly gay player,” though he also admitted that if he had to share a locker room and shower with gay teammates, he would be “a little uncomfortable at first.”

Regarding Broussard’s comments, ESPN said in a statement released to EW, “We regret that a respectful discussion of personal viewpoints became a distraction from today’s news. ESPN is fully committed to diversity and welcomes Jason Collins’ announcement.”

ESPN is full of crap. I bet they knew Broussard's views beforehand and still brought him in on this topic

i gotta agree.

He is very into his faith and even has a group for young Black Men to be leaders in their communities and follow a strong Christian blueprint. He aint just talking ...he lives like that.

So is premarital sex..

Hey Chris have you never sinned ?

Or are you another cherry picker ?

ummm...

Doesn't the bible say that god loves everyone and that we are all made in his image? And isn't against the Christian faith to judge others? I'm not a Christian but it seems like selective beliefs?

Mark Jackson said something similar, but covered it up better:

Mark Jackson Won't Rule Out Coaching Jason Collins, Talks Christian Values
Apr 29, 2013 3:37 PM EDT

Mark Jackson was asked on Monday to respond to Jason Collins' disclosure of his status as a gay man.

Jackson, who works for openly gay team president Rick Welts, has received attention for his ubiquitous Christianity as head coach of the Golden State Warriors.

"As a Christian man, I have beliefs of what's right and what's wrong," replied Jackson. "That being said, I know Jason Collins, I know his family and I'm certainly praying for them at this time."

Jackson was asked if Collins would be welcomed on the Warriors.

"If he had game. If he could help this team. Right now, he can't help this team."

Welts spoke to the media after Jackson.

"(Collins) absolutely will receive more opportunities," said Welts. "More doors will open than close."

The NBA community has been overwhelmingly supporting of Collins' announcement to Sports Illustrated.

ESPN's Chris Broussard said some players he spoke to told him privately that they might be uncomfortable playing with Collins.

I got a problem with his logic because of how totally hypocritical it is, but ESPN is full of shit if they fire him or even suspend him over this.

the line of thought when it comes to homos is that they engage in unrepentent sin so they don't ask for now do they get forgivness.

but the bible says that thou shalt not judge ....so Chris is speaking for the lord I guess.

NFL wide receiver Mike Wallace tweets insensitive remarks following Jason Collins’ coming out

mike-wallace.jpg

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace has received some backlash after tweeting insensitive remarks following Jason Collins’ decision to come out as the first gay athlete playing a major American team sport.

The current NBA star has received a widespread support from his fellow athletes and celebrities.

Still, about an hour after the Sports Illustrated essay by Collins was released, The Miami Herald reports Wallace tweeted:

“All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH…” Followed by: ”I’m not bashing anybody don’t have anything against anyone I just don’t understand it”

Shortly after tweeting Mike Wallace deleted the two tweets, and offered an apology:

Mike Wallace ✔ @Wallace17_daKid

Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don't understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended

The National Football League responded to Wallace’s tweet by saying, “we are going to review the comment. This underscores the importance of education and awareness.”

The Miami Dolphins organization also responded, releasing this statement:

Mike Wallace has apologized for his comments, and we have addressed the matter with him. Mike’s comments do not reflect the views of the Miami Dolphins. We believe in a culture of inclusiveness and respect, and any statements to the contrary are in no way acceptable to our organization. We will address the entire team about our policy of inclusion and make sure they all understand the importance of respecting individual choices.

The fuck?

Did you even watch the video before you wrote that?

Its literally the dumbest thing you could have wrote.

No i didn't watch the video////

Fuck a player gonna be uncomfortable playing with him now since he came out but not foe the last 12 years.

take that stupid shit somewhere else ..

He'll get a "mock" suspension, paid of course, while ESPN enjoys the ratings boost/buzz. They gotta be PC in the public eye, so they'll pretend to smack him on the back of his hand and keep it movin'.

ESPN wont get at Chris for shit.

He has his beliefs and he did not discriminate against anyone or any group whatsoever.

If people have a problem with what he said, they need to fight against whats written in the bible, cause Chris is just going by the bible's teachings.

I don't see what was so insensitive about what Wallace tweeted...:smh: PC run amok, that was no bash IMO.

Not a fan of Chris but he has a right to his opinion. He used "Christain values" as his platform so we will see how this plays out.

There wasn't anything wrong with what he said. The gay community wants you to agree with them 100% and when you don't you're labeled homophobic.

Chris statements were about as safe as you can get..he included 95% of people in the category of living outside of the Biblical standard, not singling out gays specifically..(but obviously this came up because of Jason Collins) fornicators and adulterers don't seem to be in an uproar over this..but gays will want his head..(no pun intended)

Truthfully I could care less, an who really gives a fuck? What one or two individuals decide to do within their bedrooms is no one's business but theirs.

As for those calling homosexuality a sin again who gives a fuck? Its their lives let them live them as they please. As long as they don't bother me were cool.

I don't think he should be fired or suspended. As an analyst, he was brought in to give his opinion and did so, and although people disagreed with him, he shouldn't be fired. He may be forced to "apologize" but thats it. Whether one agrees or disagrees with what he said, he was brought in and paid to give his opinion and he gave one. ESPN knew what they were doing. If he was doing NHL Playoff highlights on Sportscenter and out of no where went into his spiel, then I can see him getting fired/suspended.

What the fuck was Mike Wallace apologizing for again? That's like going hard at vegans for saying that while they acknowledge the rights of others to partake in it they don't understand why people eat animal products with all the delicious edible plant life out here in the world.

He won't be fired. As ESPN said, it was a respectful exchange. People really overdue this "the world is so PC" shit.

In his faith, it is a sin but I find it strange that he can speak out so strongly about the sin of homosexuality but he doesn't take that tone when any number of athletes have their own sexual exploits made public. Did he speak this hard on Tiger Woods? Or Kobe Bryant?
To answer the OP, no he shouldn't be fired or reprimanded in the slightest and it doesn't look like he will be.

Stop the talk about the sensitivity of Gay folks. What group doesn't stand up when they feel someone public has disrespected them? Do Black folks sit back and take it? Do Christians just sit back and take it? Women? The disabled? The answer is "No." So Gays shouldn't be expected to either.

Some would want them to...Read the thread regartding the Till family targeting the sponsors of Lil Wayne after he refused to apologize for his bullshit lyrics in regard to Emmit

Those are usually the people that want Gays to shut up but only because it exposes them as cowards.

I hadn't followed that story but Wayne won't even apologize to the family? :smh:

The point ballscout was making still still stands, though.

If this dude has been playing next to you for better than a decade and whatever behavior he has exhibited hasn't kept them from being cool with him, then why would him coming out all of a sudden change that unless they just got a problem with gay people?
