I was just about to ask the same thing. What's up with saving all these white folks though?
Can we talk about the director? He hasn't made a movie I don't like yet...
Denzel is using some Filipino martial arts techniques.![]()
OK I am FAR from a martial arts expert..
but what exactly did Denzel do to absorb that initial blow by just holding back his OWN shoulder to ABSORB the blow?
Would that give him enough time strength balance and leverage to do that double strike?
How you fig the art form of a trailer is underappreciated?... Hollywood puts more effort Into the trailer than the actual movie... Its been like that easily for c!lose to 2 decades.. They put more energy into trying to sell you a product than actually making a quality product... If chicken was the actual movie than Hollywood would put more effort into making it smell great, look great, making the size look larger, making it look juicy, taking pics in diff angles, making it look the perfect color, but when it comes to tasting good it would taste like shit aka actual quality...Hollywood puts energy into everything but the taste aka the quality of the movie, hence why the trailer or the ability of selling it is so big through trailers
Denzel is using some Filipino martial arts techniques.
Looks like a combination of some Kali/Arnis/Pencak Silat.
(Pencak Silat was used in that movie: The Raid.)
Denzel was a student of Filipino Martial Arts legend Dan Inosanto for several years.
Dan Inosanto was taught by Bruce Lee himself.
One of Bruce Lee's closest friends and considered Bruce's best student.
He is a Grandmaster of several styles of martial arts. (Including Jeet Kune Do, Eskrima, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, American Kenpo, Muay Thai, Kali, Pencak Silat)
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a move that Dan Inosanto showed him.

Denzel leaned in... and closed the distance of the strike. Which nullified the 'impact' of the attack.
I dunno what the exact name of that move is tho.
The guy was aiming to punch /or strike Denzel in the face, or jaw.
But that little half-step Denzel took towards him... means that the guy gets jammed up & 'over shoots' his target.
By Denzel shortening the distance... his attacker is leaning forward & now sending a forearm shot to the side of the head... INSTEAD of a closed fist to the jaw... which could have had the same MASSIVE impact as being hit by 'the end' of a baseball bat.
But Denzel absorbs the impact forearm shot... by moving his hand to brace his shoulder.
That brace move (combined with the half-turn) deadens the impact of the blow... like Mayweather's Shoulder Roll.
So instead of taking a fist DIRECTLY to the face.... Denzel is only taking a softer forearm to the back of his shoulder blade... which is fortified by his inside hand. So its kinda like using some 'temporary leverage' by wedging an iron rod under a doorknob, to help jam a door shut.
If someone is face to face with you & they swing their forearm & hit you in the shoulder... they might knock you off-balance. Depending on how strong they are.
But give your body that little half-turn... and use your other hand to brace your shoulder... and the person swinging their forearm might feel the impact more than you do. (While you can still keep your balance).
And another way to think of it is like.... Baseball.
The Attacker is the Batter. Denzel is the Pitcher.
If Denzel keeps his distance, the batter will catch him with the end of the bat (ie his fist) and knock him out of the park.
But if Denzel leans in (and pitches) closer to his hands... he jams the batter up.
And the swing doesn't have as much power to it.The batter hits a foul ball.
(Or in this case, he lands a weaker hit than a 'closed fist')
And if you ever played baseball... whenever the pitcher 'jams you up'... it stings your hands.
I could be wrong. But that's what it looks like to me.
Just saying.
No Problem.Appreciate the breakdown and the videos

I enjoyed it, although it was a little slow it didn't play out like a normal movie which I like. Not hearing good reviews....but its Denzel.
I'm still gonna go see it on the strength of his name alone.
Thanks, bruh. Btw, I studied Filmmaking / Screenwriting / Directing / Film Editing in College. My mother fucking man. You scientisted the fuck out of that. What do you do for a living? What art did you study? I swear we got some serious Masters of a whole bunch of different shit here on bgol
And it was AMAZING.Denzel killing and maiming people without breaking a sweat.![]()
No Problem.
But my bad.... I gotta make a correction on my earlier post.
Dan Inosanto was Denzel's Stunt Choreographer for The Book of Eli.
Lin Oeding & Keith Woulard were the Stunt Choreographers for The Equalizer.
- Keith Woulard is a retired Navy Seal.
- Lin Oeding has an MMA + Martial Arts background.
Here they are, working on set with Denzel Washington & Antoine Fuqua...

Well, I'm no martial arts expertwhat style of martial arts would your recommend for a 9/10 year old girl?
Well, I'm no martial arts expertbut I think it depends on what type of 'physical movement' a youngster is good at (or really enjoys doing).
(i.e There are Striking, Grappling, Trapping, Throws, or Mid-Range Disciplines)
But if you are unsure which type she would like best... start with Judo.
- For striking... try Wing Chun / Kung-Fu / or Krav Maga.
- For grappling & throws... try Judo / Brazilian Ju-jitsu / or Akido.
- For trapping & holds... try Brazilian Ju-jitsu / Wing Chun / Krav Maga / or Jeet Kune Do
- For mid-range attacks... try Karate / or (Muay Thai) Kick-boxing.
It's probably easier to learn & it will develop good balance + core strength, and it's a good starting point for her to branch out to other sports, later on.
(And it will enable her to defend against larger/stronger opponents.)
Wait, almost forgot.... Capoeira is very good for young girls also.(Especially if she likes to dance.
)
Capoeira involves alot of rhythm + music + some acrobatics... .and it's not too dangerous.
If she just wants to do something fun... and learn a few cool moves.... then maybe try Capoeira.
But if you want her to learn something more substantial (right out the gate)... that could neutralize her opponents.... then try Brazilian Ju-jitsu.
Overall, I'd say.. Judo / Ju-jitsu / or Capoeira.Start there.
Hope this helps.
