Eminem Crowned 'King of Hip-Hop' by Rolling Stone

Using a variety of criteria, Rolling Stone has crunched some numbers to instate Eminem as 'The King of Hip-Hop.' Several factors were considered in their rubric to crown the monarch, including: album sales, chart rankings, YouTube views, concert grosses, and more. All of these categories were only measured during the period spanning from 2009 through the first seven months of 2011.

Despite their claims that "King" is a gender-neutral term (it clearly isn't), only one woman, Nicki Minaj, appears on the list. Slim Shady also beat out Lil Wayne and Drake, who finish at 2nd and 3rd respectively. Top earners and 'Watch The Throne' hitsmiths Jay-Z and Kanye West come in at four and five. Especially with the duo's royal connotations, readers are sure to have a comment or two addressing the rankings.

Rolling Stone's last coronation, which crowned Lady Gaga the Queen of Pop, didn't go over too well. Their decision was overruled after the readers staged a coup and gave the title to Madonna by larger than a 2 to 1 margin. Check out their rankings for 'The King of Hip-Hop' below.

Not surprising.

i don't see a problem with it

First, Walter runs BGOL. Now, this. We get a black president, then we're infiltrated by crackas that wanna be like us. :smh:

No shock considering that's pretty much how it's worked throughout history. Black people create something and white people take it over. Rinse and repeat.

Elvis is reborn.:smh:

lol. Em couldn't see Kanye during these last couple of years. His latest shit was horrible.

there is no king of hip hop PERIOD
never has been
never will be
and rolling stone isn't qualified to speak on hip hop when it doesn't even cover ALL of hip hop
invalid
and worthless

Who cares about Rolling Stones opinion? That's the equivalent of the white guy at work saying he's down because he listens to Jay-Z.

Eminem? the fuck outta here. maybe in 1999-2002, you might of had a argument but Eminem is Garbage right now, The only reason why he still relevant is because he is white.

He is been trash since the Eminem Show, but you got so many dick sucking niggas in hiphop now, they won't speak the truth because there scared it might hurt there white fanbase.

Jay-z to me (Especially when he dies) will go down as the greatest rapper alive surpassing biggie and tupac. We won't say it now because he is alive of course but

He has been out seen 1996. and in 2011 (Presents) still sells more records than your average rapper. He is the true King of HipHop

:hmm::dunno::hmm::thumbsdown: "Don't drink the kool-aid!!!!

Don't tell me you katz are still falling for magazine stunts!

The music video for the single "King of Rock" was the first ever rap video to air on MTV and received heavy rotation from the channel. It featured Run and DMC wreaking havoc in a museum that resembles the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, (though the Hall of Fame museum would not officially open for another nine years.) The video was interpreted as a reaction to the rock establishment's dismissal of rap music, a dismissal that echoed pop and jazz performers' early distaste for rock a generation before. The song was the group's biggest hit at that point and the album was certified platinum.
Since being founded in 1983, the Rock Hall has been criticized for being slow to recognize some bands and genres, but the induction of Metallica and Run-DMC (plus that of acts like Black Sabbath and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in recent years) seems to indicate that is changing.

:hmm:

If your not in the music business do not go out and buy a fucking Rolling Stone
magazine unless you collect them!

He's def one of the best to ever do it. King of hiphop though............

King of Hip Hop is kinda stretching it, but he was the "KING" at one point. His race insecurity affects his song lyric content. His affinity is to be the best rhymer and shock value stems from Detroit (for real).

lol. Em couldn't see Kanye during these last couple of years. His latest shit was horrible.

Lyrically, maybe. Does that hold up using the metric Rolling Stone used?

lol wayne made em hot again.
just being associated with wayne (young money) gets you on
who does em have or ever had?

and im not even a fan of this new wayne

50 Cent went from hot underground guy to the top of the rap and pop charts after he signed with Shady.
D12 went platinum.
Benzino, after years of failing, became something of a name based off beefing with Em.
Again, when you figure in the things RS figured in, Wayne would lose because he spent a great deal of that time period locked up.
Not a fan of this new versio of Wayne myself.

there is no king of hip hop PERIOD

On a greater point, I fully agree. This is a marketing gimmick by RS to get some attention.

he is.

and greatness comes with consistency and longevity at the highest level...eminem is arguably the GOAT at this point.

I mean I won't argue it. Personally, i'd say Jay is but there's a handful of a guys I won't argue. I won't argue against Kanye, Nas, Em, Wayne and Jay. Now if we're talking all time? I'd have a hard time saying BIG and Pac with the impact they've had on rap and our culture. Its still there 13 years after their death.

The same Rolling Stone magazine that praises every Britney Spears album and actually criticized Thriller:smh: I like Eminem he's one of my favorites but to say he's the king of hip hop:lol::smh:

how can you argue.
dude just sold how much in a digital age. (millions sold, radio station, music label)
hate to admit if he aint at the top, or if you not trying to knock his crown off i think you aiming to low.
his first album i tossed out the window of my fams whip when they tried to play it back in the day.just outta hate and non relation.
fast forward--dude still selling ,folks still buying while all your favorite rappers are on the shelf.
wanna blame someone-look in the mirror.
cuz i can honestly say if it aint a nas cd-you wont see me in the store im downloading.yet have to give credit due where deserved.
i have never purchased or listened to dudes album, yet his singles stay hittin me in the head. radio, satellite, movies you cant escape him.

not even close. em been screamin 'i am doing black music. i paid dues at underground hip hop spots and was the only white boy rippin' since day one. elvis never went on record sayin where he got his 'flavor' from even though everybody already knows.

but all those kinds of polls are bullsheit. u got dudes on bgol that was hollaring out dudes like waka flocka and souljah boi were better lyricists than nas :smh:

what's so different about those crazy azz statements and what rolling stone said? if anything em should be in the top 5 if you're talking about skill, money made, popularity and the pushing of hip hop music. number one? nah. but definitely in the top 5

It doesn't matter, it's their opinion.
Why do you care what other people think is the best of your music?
Do they care who black people think is the best classical music or grunge artist?
I think not!!!
Stop looking on the man to give you props and you might someday become the man!!!

What does that mean in terms of mainstream hip-hop nowadays? Least lame? I wouldnt take the Source seriously if they did same, Rolling Stone is a rock mag, so they matter even less.
