Eminem Crowned 'King of Hip-Hop' by Rolling Stone

its different eras

the koolg rap, big daddy kane, rakim era

then the big l, biggie, jayz, nas , raewon era

then the lox, mase, camron, big pun

then the fab, 50, joe budden, cassidy, juelz santana, dipset era

you know shit like that, its a chain

every era is slightly influenced by the earlier era

the most influential era was the biggie, raekwon, jayz, big l, nas era cuz people are still using that today

i'd say the biggest influence to the biggie and nas and rae era was kool g rap

eminem and big pun are very special btw, their not average at all

Jay-Z is Biggie and Jaz-O's mini Me...

dude can't wear the crown if we talking about influence... if you talking about the "most successful" master P/puffy factor... yeah he is the king of the rappin moguls ....and definitely one of the best acts of THIS generation... but when you start talking talent and influence he can only WATCH the Throne
*rimshot*

lol

cant argue wit u there but i'd honestly have to say that jay is more complex than biggie

:lol: @ the people trying to rationale for Eminem. Nobody said Em doesn't have skill. But to be honest it's hilarious that Rolling Stone even made a formula. Again Hip hop is the one genre where "they" can't impose who is who. Prime example: When the Source named Biggie "King of New York"(and rap for that matter) On the cover in 96, the rap community for the most part accepted it. It's not based on facebook likes and youtube hits. Again that's why a cat like Jadakiss can be one of the greats without selling records..

Far as Em vs. Jay...sure Em can rap, Em has the respect of the hip hop community but to be honest the hip hop community doesn't relate to Eminem. People talk about "respect of your peers" ...who has more than Jay? I've not heard ONE rapper yet say "I look up to Eminem". Cats all the time talk about how they are influenced by Jay. Even the cats that don't like him respect his track record..... Shit look at Wayne dude actually said to change his style "I did nothing but lock myself in the house and listen to Jay-Z") Dudes from everywhere respect Jay when they talk about influence. Everybody who has got "hot" in the past 10 years goes to get Jay for a track, it speaks for itself.

At the end of the day, hip hop people like artists they can "feel" and the average hip hop head who is likely an inner city minority can't relate to the trailer park, drug induced adventures of Eminem. They respect him as a rapper, but that's all they see him as.

In da highlighted portion of your post you made a VERY solid point.

- bruh, he appeared on this album right at the time he got his first record deal. he wasn't even close to being a household name at the time this dropped.

if this were kanye who were on an album with mos def, common, kweli, j live, prince paul before he got his first record deal (they were recording this album and his first album @ the same time) you dudes would use this in every debate about Kanye's credibility as an artist or emcee.

Man stop it. Those appearances did nothin for him. Who the fuck was expecting his album? Nobody. So again stop it. You seriously must just want to be a contrarian. This shit is like saying Kanye came up through Bad Boy because he did his early beats under D-Dot. Your premise is awful

Live Performance
Jay-Z tours constantly, and has evolved into arguably one of the best live acts on the planet. Eminem has simply not been as present on the live circuit, and is not a valid contender in this category.
Edge: Jay-ZMoney
Perennially the top dog on Forbes biggest hip-hop earners, Jay racked in $63 million last year. Despite the tremendous sales numbers of his comeback album Relapse, Eminem made a relatively piddling $8 million last year, good for the No. 14 spot on Forbes list.
Edge: Jay-Z

Business Empire
Jay’s business acumen is so well-documented, even your mother could probably list off a few of his more prominent assets and perhaps a few of his major transactions. For the record: founded Roc Nation, a record label and management company that operates under Live Nation; is a minority owner of the New Jersey Nets; co-founded Rocawear (and sold the rights to the company in 2006 for $204 million); co-owns the 40/40 nightclub chain; and is an investor in Carol’s Daughter, the Oprah-approved line of organic beauty products. Also co-founded his first label, Roc-a-Fella, which saw a string of successes, including releases from Dipset and Kanye, before collapsing after a fallout with Jay’s former partner Dame Dash (who is now attempting to resurrect the brand).

Eminem, on the other hand, seemingly has no interest in monetizing his fame in any way other than selling albums. He is co-founder and owner of Shady Records, which is distributed by Interscope, and also has a Sirius radio channel, Shade 45, which seems like more of a hobby than anything else.
Edge: Jay-Z

lil facts to aid the arguments..

SIR, NONE OF THESE FACTS U STATE , TRULLY MATTER IN THIS ART OF "OURS", NOT SALES,NOT TOUR GROSS,NOT HOW MANY GRAMMIES, NOT OSCAR NODS, BUT INFLUENCE KIND SIR, INFLUENCE! IF THAT'S THE CASE, THEN USHER IS GREATER THAN MARVIN, COS MARVIN ONLY HAS 1 GRAMMY! Pls stop with this bullshit!

Kanye came out in 2004 and his influence has already surpassed Eminem, who came out in early '99.

I'm pretty much finished with this discussion since brothers are gonna have their opinion anyway.

We all know Eminem's commercial success is driven off his race primarily, so the fact that Rolling Stone would use his commercial success to crown him as a king, repeating racist history in the process, is insulting to me personally. It's amazing there's black men who would defend this.

Peace to all the brothers in this thread, but I'm outta here...

THIS RIGHT HERE MAN, THIS RIGHT HERE, I THINK IM DONE TOO, THE FACT THAT KATS WOULD EVEN ATTEMPT TO IS CRAZY, IF THAT'S THE CASE THEN CHRISTINA AGUILERA IS A GREATER SOUL ARTIST THAN JILL SCOTT OR BADU& GLDYS,
THEN TIMBERLAKE & USHER OUTSHINE MARVIN& DONNIE
THEN U KNOW THE REST!

So true Kanye has had more INFLUENCE than Em in his shorter career, he spunned off a whole new style & swag that gave u ,drake-& his clones yet no one is even trynna say he is on par with Jay.. In fact I'm out! ALL PRAISES DUE TO UR WHITE LORD & SAVIOR EM-I-NEM!!

you mean rhyme scheme right?

either that or biggie went over your head homie... most people don't give him credit but dude was pretty deep.. just on the sly

yea biggie was deep i call the mathematician of rap

he broke every line down to its simplest form, which is amazing

but jay i guess is more complicated with the lines, i guess rhyme scheme

but u get what im saying tho, like biggie was very simple, the simplest things he would say meant a lot but it was simply put is what i mean

not following your argument bruh...who said anything about anybody "expecting" his album?

what i meant by "came up through rawkus" is that his first ever mainstream public appearance was on a RAWKUS compilation album...

but again, like the weird ass nigga that you are: you will discredit the fact that a no-named white boy earned the stripes to appear on an album with common, mos def, talib kweli, q-tip, pete rock etc etc..

but let me guess, they are all sellouts and nobodies aren't they, even back in 1998

He's def one of the best to ever do it. King of hiphop though............

I mean I won't argue it. Personally, i'd say Jay is but there's a handful of a guys I won't argue. I won't argue against Kanye, Nas, Em, Wayne and Jay. Now if we're talking all time? I'd have a hard time saying BIG and Pac with the impact they've had on rap and our culture. Its still there 13 years after their death.
