Dog owner question: When is the right time to euthanize your dog?

Damn man.

I been considering getting a pet, and that part was one of my concerns.

Been through a few big losses recently, I'd hate to get as close as I know I would to a dog or cat only to have it end that way.

That shit is real fam, they become a part of the family. You're dog will pull hoes for you, sit and watch the game with you like one of the homies, post up at the grill with you (hoping you show him some love). There's just no way you won't get close but it can be worth it brotha.

when their quality of life is affected so much that they are in constant severe pain, or when it's to the point that they're just dying slowly in front of you with no hope of survival. Like I've had a dog and a cat... both had cancer (dog also had kidney issues) and like death was imminent. They weren't eating, and hardly drinking if at all.... An animal that isn't eating or drinking.... the shit is over... just a matter of time. At that point, I took them both in (these situations were a year apart). With the cat I actually waited too days longer than I should have. On Friday he actually showed what I thought was some promise... he was able to jump up on my bed, so I thought, maybe he might pull through for a bit, but that weekend was just the saddest weekend of my life. He was obviously miserable, and didn't drink a drop of water, so Monday I took him in.

My 12 year old rottweiler has cancer and has a dysfunctional hip causing him pain.

Just asking for your opinions.

When you only need to take the dog out once a day, around 2pm....

As an owner of an 11 year old dog that's lost a step, this thread depresses the hell outta me. I know it's coming soon one day, so I try to enjoy him as much as I can. He almost didn't make it about a few years back. He had to have emergency hernia surgery. He'd just lay there all day, wouldn't eat, wouldn't walk. I'd have to pick him up and carry him down 3 flights of stairs just to take a piss. It cost a grip, but I pony'd up. A few days later he was back to his old self. I'm glad I did it...because for a split second I was thinking about letting him go.

Seriously though, I had to put my father's dog down 6 years ago. He was a German Shepherd, fifteen years old, but had leg/hip issues and could hardly walk.

Broke me, my dad passed away in 2002, and putting his dog down brought that pain back, as it was one last "tie" to my dad....

Homie weather watches me. :smh:

He likes when I reup on a fresh bag.

Definitely my ace boon coon.

....and OP, don't let him suffer if the pain becomes too much to bear. It's a big decision....a hard decision, but a decision you're making on his behalf thats in his best interest.

Yeah man, they really are man's best friend. Whatever you like, they love. I don't know, maybe one of these days I'll get another dog but I'm cool for now.

Marley & Me is the only movie I ever rented from Redbox and never returned, I used to bet niggas they couldn't watch it without getting teary eyed

I just had to put down my black lab. He was around 13.. Got cancer in his foot and we couldn't afford the money, especially when they said they could guarantee that he would be okay.

Condolences on your black lab, fam'. Ours was named Sid. We nicknamed him "The Wonder Dog". Almost lost him at 4yo back in the day. Pops took him for a walk in the local trails and was throwing a stick for him on one of his fave steep paths that he would run down about 20m & then return with. He ran down and caught himself on one of the old tree stumps and tore his stomach open and was a mess. Pops had to go and collect him and hurriedly rush him back to the car (which was about 20 mins away on foot up an incline bark mulch trail). Had him wrapped in his fall jacket so that he wouldn't bleed out. Dog was in shock and remained calm and just kept eye contact with him and didn't whine or whimper. Luckily he was able to get him to the emergency animal hospital/vet and get him severely stitched up. So glad he lived for many more years after that and his health wasn't compromised. Could have easily hit other major arteries or blood vessels in the stomach/chest region there.

Enjoyed that movie too. Another one that tells the story between dog/human(s) well too is My Dog Skip. Saw that one shortly after our dog passed back in the day. That one hit the feelings too. Starred Frankie Muniz (from Malcolm in the Middle), Kevin Bacon, etc.

We had to put our black lab down at 13yo back in June of 2000. He had been struggling for a few months with severe respiratory issues that were compromising his quality of life. Couldn't get comfortable ... was in distress at times (as the weather was heating up leading into summer) ... and wasn't able to run/exercise like he had for so many years. The type of dog that could run and swim for hours on end even until just a few years prior. Luckily a close friend of the fam' works for the SPCA and he met us there and helped put the dog down. Hit me in the car though as that dog was basically like a little brother. Had been with me for my grade school, junior high, high school, and some college years (got him in 1987 at a few months old). Just a cool-ass muthafuckin' dog. Hell ... my fave photo of him is in the late-80s out in the yard with us as kids ... we've got the shades on him and he's sporting the Batman t-shirt lookin' like a stonecold G. That was when Batman was all the rage with Nicholson and company.

The thing that got me about my brothers dog washow my niece she had him from the time she was 2 to 17. She took to it like a champ tho. That was her boy and she made the call. It's crazy how we bond with them, they truly become part of the family.

Man this is why I cant with dogs. My boy got his dog at the age of 10 happiest I ever seen him in life at the time his dog quickly became our dog as he was part of the crew. He was truly our dog as I would take him at times he went out of town with fam when he was younger and later on business trips I loved that dog as if it was mines fast forward 17yrs later I noticed that he wasnt looking the same and his natural movements were becoming labored at best I brung it up to him in numerous occassions but the last time we got into a big blow up about it I knew what it was about so I didnt take it personally. He finally made the decision to put him down and he asked me to be there and it was not a pretty scene two big ass former college football players standing in the vets office inconsolably crying for our lost fam. I will always love dogs from afar but will never own one.

Yes - they teach us so much about loyalty, trust, and companionship. Really great to see kids bond with pets/animals too as it teaches them not to be afraid of larger animals when they're out and about and encounter other ones, and also teaches them to be kind and look out for their little 4-legged friends. Hell, we had our lab kicking the soccer ball and chasing after the basketball out near the lane. Jumping off of docks chasing after sticks and tennis balls. Fam was built like a running back. No HGH or steroids needed. 100% Natural like a 1970s bush on a porn chick!

:roflmao3:

I had a cocker spaniel who had pancreatic cancer. I couldn't afford to get him euthanized so I did the next best thing I could do. I gave him oxycontin. I started in small doses. He went peacefully and I buried him in my backyard.

Condolences regarding your loss too, fam'.

it hurts worst when the dog absolutely loves you to death.
my dog is always the first to great me at the door when i get home everyday.
she wont stop spinning around and going crazy until i pick her up and acknowledge her.
dogs got a soul, and i treat em as such.

Bruh, one of my dogs just passed two days before thanksgiving at 15. For the last year of his life he started going down, losing weight, unable to walk without staggering, but I couldn't put him down. He had cancer too. Him and his brother were together the whole time, and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. He died while I was away on vacation so I didn't experience his actually passing, but my nephew said he was suffering really bad his last two days...

I say all that to say, I totally regret not putting him down when I was advised to, and sometimes we selfishly hold on when its in their best interest we let go. I won't make the same mistake with his brother who is still doing remarkably well... but I will always deal with the grief of losing him AND the the regret of allowing him to suffer because I couldn't let go...

I'm haunted of that image when they put him in the plastic bag. I keep seeing it over and over in my mind. It was tough to do but I rest easy knowing he is out of pain.

Yeah Man... He would have appreciated you for it. I come in the house still, two months later, and see my lil Dude just laying on the floor, trying to get up to play with me, staggering and shit his last week here... You definitely did the right thing man. Keep your head up. People never understand just how close a pet can be to you real rap... :smh:

Thanks bruh. I brought him the same month I brought my house and you can tell something is missing even today.

I hear you on that. You're welcome. Yeah - they definitely become members of the family. It's amazing the impact that animals/pets have on humans' lives, and vice-versa. Incredible creatures.

My brother's got a mix that just turned 3yo. Almost looks like a cross between a wolf & a greyhound. Tall and lean. Really well-behaved. I think I heard it bark once since I've known it. Once. Smart & aware. We were visiting bro in November and that dog was riding shotgun between the 2 front seats leaning through on the '97 Explorer. Funny shit. Almost like they were helping us scan the highway.

My boxer love to ride. He keep his head out the window and you would be surprised at the hunnies who break their neck to compliment him in traffic.
