Wrong. They could never get the system to work reliably enough to man rate it. So the computer was a back up. What they used to navigate was something called an inertial navigator invented by a cat at MIT in the 40's or 50's.

The US was the only country to put men on the Moon. The astronauts weren't in the Van Allen Belts to receive a large enough dose. The Russians put radio controlled rovers on the Moon while we were walking around up there.
If you go to a large enough observatory, you can bounce a laser off of reflectors left there by the Russian and American astronauts.

The economy and wars stopped the Moon explorations. The Govt. had to look for programs to cut and NASA's got cut. There were those in power back then who followed the "been there done that" motto so going back to the Moon was passe ... especially when there were no discernable benefits to going back.
Strangely enough NASA also threw out the plans to the rockets, landers and the rovers that took the astronauts to the Moon and back. So they are now doing reverse engineering on surviving unused Moon rocket tech found on museum grounds to redesign rockets to take us back there in a decade or so.
Weird hunh that they can't draw up plans from scratch or that they threw away historical documents for lack of storage space.
