DJANGO: est $62+ Million in first 6 days - thanks, Spike!

Dudes is capin hard for Tarentino...hope I see yall cape as hard for your sisters too

That's hilarious to me. I've never seen this much capin for shit black.

Spike put out a movie about black soldiers in WW2, and there was none of this out rush to see it from black people, but we have to just go see a movie about slavery. That says something about us as a people.

Just once I would like for muthafuckas to go all in for something black.

Why are we taking away Inside Man?

To make some ridiculous, nonsensical point, ssome have to change reality to fit their argument. Tyler Perry outdraws Spike too, does that make him a better filmmaker or just a guy with a broad, loyal audience? Tarantino and Perry outdraw the Hughes brothers too, are they better than them?
Good or bad (and to me, they're most often bad), Tarantino's movies are perceived as "events".

Oh I get it ....so YOU had to watch gay porn first before you could say 'that's not for me'??
:smh:

YOU need to think instead of getting all emotional and irrational because people criticize dislike a movie BASED ON THE TRAILER... that is the whole point of the TRAILER... To get you to make a judgement to watch the movie

You niggas are MASTERS of subterfuge, man... Trolls that don't even know you're trolls. You seriously just tried to compare Homosexual Porn to an Action Film, and I bet you kept a straight face too.

Then tried to defend being a critic of a film you've never fucking seen, based on a Smash Cut trailer that has no story composition whatsoever.

On top of that, the hours you've spent in these Django thread you could have watched the movie 5 times over, and ultimately be able to make an educated opinion..

And in the end you'll quote me defending everything about while maintaining complete seriousness. MASTERS of subterfuge and deflection on here. I hope some of you are into Poli-Sci.. A career of Law and a future in Politics would suit most of you.

Good or bad (and to me, they're most often bad), Tarantino's movies are perceived as "events".

That wasn't even the point being made.. The main point in that was how does a Director with ONE worldwide commercial success sit on his high-horse looking down at other Directors?.. Critical acclaim doesn't pay the bills.

How do you know? Are you a film or culture expert?

I would hazard to guess that I'm just as much of an expert as you are

The problem is that you don't understand behavioral conditioning and Hollywood's subliminal messages... unless Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen or Michael Richards doesn't scream N****R at the top of their lungs on tape you pretty much are going to be fine with it...

Despite your assertion to the contrary, I absolutely understand many of the subliminal messages and their implications. I just don't agree that they are present here.

Most of the public don't even understand what the TRUE UNDERLYING message of the hollywood movies are... that's why most of you 'brothers' still feed your seeds that disney poison... cause as long as they don't show blood and don't swear you think it is safe for your kids...

I don't believe that I indicated anywhere in my post that it was appropriate for children to see this film. If you need me to spell it out for you, I would in fact strongly discourage any parent from allowing an impressionable child to watch this film. This actually could be said for all his movies BTW.

That wasn't even the point being made.. The main point in that was how does a Director with ONE worldwide commercial success sit on his high-horse looking down at other Directors?.. Critical acclaim doesn't pay the bills.

It doesn't, that's why Spike has successful outside ventures so he can make the movies he wants to make.
That was exactly the point being made. The financial success of a director is important and noteworthy but it's not the most important, end-all/be-all that it is now that there are people critical of this particular director (Perry is at least as profitable as Tarantino so does that make him "great"?).
Spike Lee's track record of good to great films stands on it's own and his courage and ability to take risks and diversity of topics (from dramas to murder mysteries to comedies) had long cememted his legacy as a great filmmaker.

Some of you dudes logic is failing big time on this one.

The whole point is Spike never saw the film so logically the only thing he can say is I won't see it based on what I think it's about and what I know of the director. That's fair.

But for those of us who have actually SEEN the movie, it fails to hold up to a lot of the presupposed criticism.

Yes, in order to intelligently debate a subject, you need a matter of references.

The problem is dudes who have not seen the film is debating folks who have.

If you have noticed, most of the people who have seen the movie, at the very least thought the "controversy" was overblown and at best loved the film.

I thought it was a good movie and Jamie held his own as a justified lead. Leonardo killed his role and Sam played the best real life Uncle Ruckus ever depicted on film.

Didn't like the storyline, dialogue, performances, cool. But dude are trying to intellectually break down what they THINK the movie is about. :smh:

As far as your gay porn comparison (while odd in it's own right), if I know that's not my thing, I know not to watch it.

But I also won't be trying to break down the scenes and camera lighting also!

This puts us right back with the Madea/Tyler Perry debate... I don't like watching brothers in skirts... and I don't like watching racial stories by 'white' filmmakers...

As far as 'most who seen the movie enjoyed it' argument... this is a simpleton's logic ... obviously if you watched the movie .... you invested your time and money in seeing the movie there was SOME level of interest there

For Example:
I never paid for a prostitute but "MOST" of the people who have say they enjoy the service... bottom line is if you participate in something it is more likely that you will enjoy it than someone who is not interested would enjoy it... this is not some magical smoking gun as to the greatness of the experience bruh

people keep making the argument about spikes budget, did anyone ever think theres a reason the big wigs not giving his hating ass a big budget. Spike lee is an ass.

people keep making the argument about spikes budget, did anyone ever think theres a reason the big wigs not giving his hating ass a big budget. Spike lee is an ass.

He doesn't get big budgets because he doesn't make movies that need big budgets. You might see him as an "ass" (there is no reward for honesty) but you can be sure he knows how to work "the game" and get what he needs, one way or another.

You niggas are MASTERS of subterfuge, man... Trolls that don't even know you're trolls. You seriously just tried to compare Homosexual Porn to an Action Film, and I bet you kept a straight face too.

That's why it's useless to have a discussion on this board...if u disagree with a point, u are a sambo or Uncle Tom....if you agree, u are a militant....pure bullshit on this site...and it's from people who haven't even seen the movie but use a trailer to make thousands of posts about how if you like the movie you are a sambo? If you read my posts I liked the majority of the movie, but was offended by some scenes involving Samuel Jackson and the dogs...especially since black history is my profession, but like other depictions of slavery on film, I understand that it's only a depiction meaning its fiction....

Now if you don't believe Hollywood is racist you are blind, plain and simple....I've seen that in my research...Hollywood is nasty with racism....they don't like us in Hollywood...but based on the movie scenes, interviews that tarantino has done, etc..I believe Tarantino made the movie because of his hatred of slavery and his hedonistic fetish for revenge fantasies...that's it....dude is a weird ass film geek who gets off on blood, sex, and violence and chose American slavery as a background for a revenge fantasy for blacks to get back at whites for the horrors of slavery....if u saw the movie, I know you saw this in the film or read his interview I posted with Henry Louis gates....

In conclusion, both spike lee and Tarantino are two of my favorite directors of all time...do the right thing is a top 10 movie for me and pulp fiction is top 20.....they both are different but both are great and this is my opinion. Period.

after much internal conflict, went to the theater last night to see it. two friends texted me and said that they enjoyed it.

I watched Red Hook Summer a few days ago to be caught up on SPIKE, too.

Walked out on Django before finishing the movie.

To put this into perspective, EVERY sign was telling me NOT to see this movie, and I never vacillate this much on any thing film-related.

I'm in Torrance, CA, and there was a stabbing at the movie theater across the street where I'd already purchased tickets. Torrance is a nice area, so this was a surprise.

Raced to 4 other SOLD OUT theaters with my boy, Los, before finally catching an 11pm show at The Rave...which was packed.

Cleared my mind, and settled in. I'm a Big Tarantino fan, and prepped myself with Inglorious Bastereds the day before. Again, I have a LOVE / HATE relationship with Quentin. As a filmmaker myself, I think that his work is incredible. That said, I know in my gut that he hates black men. He doesn't realize it, but he hates black men. We have an abusive relationship. One day, I'm going to make a video essay about Quentin's movies, but for the time being, I was expecting to love elements about the movie, and despise the undercurrent of disgust that this dude has towards me as a black man.

I walked out hating this movie COMPLETELY.

Removing the black man part of me and watching this movie objectively, it was a meandering and aimless experience that was poorly paced, cut, and lacked ANY of the elements that I love about Tarantino films. Honestly, it felt so UN-Tarantino, that had you removed his name and put any other director on it (minus the various Leone zoom-ins), I'd have believed it was done by someone else.

The Black Man in me was revolted. This was basically porn. I've never seen wholesale graphic imagery like this used SOLEY for entertainment.

I won't condemn another man for digging this. I don't get into other people's preferences. That said, my boy and I left this joint at the point when they dumped the water on Kerry Washington. I wanted to leave earlier - much earlier- but I was missing cues from the homie, mistakenly thinking that he was engaged. He too, was appalled. From the Black Mandingo fight to the abhorrent slave chicks on Don Johnson's farm, this shit was insulting on nearly every conceivable level.

To me.

Maybe I should loose cred, but if i want to see a 'black superhero' movie posed in a controversial time period, I'll watch Devil in a Blue Dress or Rosewood. Both exceptionally underrated movies.

If Quentin is right in his various interviews, and he believes that young black youth will look to this movie as their movie of CHOICE in a generation....no fucking way while I have any say so.

This movie made me sad beyond belief.

My buddy said it best. After walking out, it's almost like (and he's not even a big QT fan), this fool made a movie that he didn't even put any real effort into. It's like he made what he thinks THAT audience wants to see. Some shit for the lowest common denominator. It was crude, exploitative, and cinematically immature.

Fuck this movie. Spike was dead on.

So in essence your problem with the movie is that you just truly believe it to be poorly made?

That wasn't even the point being made.. The main point in that was how does a Director with ONE worldwide commercial success sit on his high-horse looking down at other Directors?.. Critical acclaim doesn't pay the bills.
dude - you are all over the place - Spike just said, "I'm not interested in seeing this movie, it is offensive to me and my ancestors" and that QT is too comfortable using the word ****** -he didn't say QT sucks and makes horrible movies...

What I'm saying is I can't wait to steal this movie and see what QT did this time... but in general I find the premise of the movie offensive, especially when I consider that Hollywood would never ever evvvveeeer allow a spaghetti western set during the pogroms or a concentration camp jail break to be filmed and distributed...

people keep making the argument about spikes budget, did anyone ever think theres a reason the big wigs not giving his hating ass a big budget. Spike lee is an ass.

You don't need much to make a great movie.

$1 millie can make excellent award winning movies.

but please show me when the Jews romanticize the holocaust or allow anyone else to do so..

and was the producers set in a concentration camp? did it have a scene in the film where theres song and dance while jews are in a gas chamber?

do you think mel brooks would do a scene like that?

I LOVE the producers but it didn't come close to using the holocaust as a backdrop for its story.

2. I also studied black history in DEPTH ... as well as black cinema... so now are you claiming you saw no red flags in the the trailer and reviews...BUT watched the movie and found some parts offensive?? Would you recommend I watch the movie if I do not want to pay to be offended by Hollywood? What if violence and sex isn't something I go to movies to see? Should I still go?? Why?? Get it??

I also never said I don't like Tarentino's movies... in fact he used to be one of my favorite directors... before I realized he is not an artist he is a hack... Back in the day when so many minutes of nudity, shooting, and violence was entertaining he was great to me... Now I am a little balder and hopefully wiser Tanrentino flicks are like watching power rangers... top that off with the 'power rangers go to africa' type of project and I am 10000% good and not seeing this film if i can help it...

Nah.. Nothing wrong with having a discussion. But's it's BEYOND ignorant to spend hours upon hours of your life discussing a film YOU'VE NEVER SEEN that you're supposedly you're offended by.. Troll shit, it is..

No one is saying the movie sucks or is overtly racist... but why is it so hard for most of y'all to get that the idea of a spaghetti western set during plantation slave times would be offensive to someone that lived through and remembers the 50's and 60's

I agree 100 percent with this statement. But I also see the other side where people on here are arguing that spike is condemning a movie he has not seen.....check the interview between Tarantino and Henry Louis gates I posted....really good read on background and themes in the movie....plus there is another contingent arguing that spike's history of criticizing cinema raises eyebrows that he may be hating....I believe that all arguments here have merit.

[WARNING CHEESY/CORNY ALERT] the exploitation of our mothers and sisters disturbed me [especially at the hands of 'the man']... also I no longer want to support the sex trade... another reason i never visited DR/brasil etc... [that and my trickin allergy lol...] I ain't sayin I'm better than nobody but this is what life has come to for me...

Nah.. Nothing wrong with having a discussion. But's it's BEYOND ignorant to spend hours upon hours of your life discussing a film YOU'VE NEVER SEEN that you're supposedly you're offended by.. Troll shit, it is..

I... Haven't spent hours upon hours discussing a film ... you are being emotional and exaggerating... Like a female ... and i try to avoid going back and forth with females... I have like 10 tabs up right now... been checking in and out here like everyone else... you the only one seeming obsessed all hot and bothered ... It's sunday i'm posted doing me... what you worried about me for??

after much internal conflict, went to the theater last night to see it. two friends texted me and said that they enjoyed it.

Bump-pid-dy-Bump.
