Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

Diagnosed with prostate cancer April 2024 and having surgery on July 1.
The surgery will be a RALP (Robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy)
Complete removal of the prostate.
As black men, this can be a touchy subject.
Fortunately, we can hide behind our screen names to discuss.
A few of my family members know about it, but for the most part, I have been dealing with it with the wife and kids.
My PSA was a 12.4 (below 4 is normal)
If anyone, has questions, I will try to answer them the best I can.
Keep a brother in y'all thoughts!!
I guess you did an MRI and a biopsy, and they determined that radiation was not an option. Many of my friends diagnosed with prostate cancer, even with PSA # in the double digits, have opted for the radiation treatment. It is the least intrusive. Get a second opinion it maybe biased to their speciality. Remember if you go into a barber shop don't be surprised if you come out with a haircut. Wishing you all the best.

Radiation wasn't an option because my levels were somewhat low. My Gleason score was a 7(3+4). I could have done active surveillance but I didn't want to take that chance and have it metastasize later on. I don't regret my decision having it removed.

I'm gonna read every post in this thread, but I'm only 4 pages deep. But I can say after 2 months of research, I had to come to BGOL to get straight answers from SmootD. Some shit never changes. I'm gonna give a brief summary that you can contrast with SmoothD.

I'm 65. Been doing regular psa tests for years. My doctor is pretty woke.
6/24 my psa is 3.9. 6/25 it's 5.2. Doctor freaks, refers me to urologist. 9/25 I'm 6.8. MRI next. See's whatever looks like cancer. 10/25 biopsy done. Gleason score 3÷3=6. More on what that means later, but bottom line is that it's cancer. Now I'm waiting on a genomics test, which will give us an idea of how aggressive it is to determine our next step.

I had zero to mild symptoms. Last week I sat in a chair for 8 hours at a hearing drinking coffee without getting up with zero discomfort. But I have prostate cancer. Point is don't wait for symptoms if you have access to care.

I hope this adds to what SD started. I'm still shaking my head that it took this thread for me to feel like I understand my situation. BGOL is a trip.

I'm sorry to hear this brother, wishing you the best and hoping it's not aggressive.

Keep us updated on how you're doing.

When you say zero to mild symptoms, what does that entail?

The PSA number is a guide it increases slowly as we age, it's the big jump in a short time that freaked your Doc out. It just signifies there may be something going on. There are very few symptoms of prostate cancer other than the frequent urination due the enlarged prostate. You probably need a MRI and, pending the results a biopsy of the prostate. At this stage it's entirely curable. The good news is it sounds like you caught it early. Listen to your docs, consider what your options are, get a second opinion, then choose the right one for you. Keep your head up, it's pretty common (something like 1 in 8 men) and the technology to treat it has come a long way. I am a survivor.

I started reading every response in this post!! Im turning 71 this year not old yet ( not over 95 LOL) All seriousness tho!! found out yesterday the results of my Transrectal ultrasound and biopsy. My PSA readings over the years starting at 55 yrs old. This year PSA been steadily going up and down... Caused my Urologist concern.. Been on Prostate meds for over 10 years now.. PSA was at 4 ( Without meds 8 ) Biopsy results Gleason 7... ( 3+4. 30 % pattern 4) Yes my fears I have prostate cancer but caught early enough. My decision is to have it removed. No sense in all the radiation and further testing only to have the cancer return later. Having a family history ( Dad and Brothers ) it is the right choice for me... This shit just keeps fucking with my head constantly thinking about it until its out of my body!!! Glad it was detected early..Will keep yall updated with the progress. The journey continues
