1. No dairy period.

2. do not mix starches and meats.

3. Do not drink any fluids 30 mins before or after eating.

4. eat fruits on an empty stomach.

5. spinach is natures perfect food.

Just got in from a 3day hospital stay. I was just diagnosed with Diabetes. Need Major Lifestyle change/and diet. I know this disease is heavy in our commuinity, so if ya'll got any suggestions, recipes, diets, exercise routines etc. It would be gr8tly loved

Peace to All

Lose weight, start running and check your blood glucose often.
If you lose enough weight soon enough (assuming that you are a type 2 diabetic) you may be able to get back normal insulin response, and essentially not be a diabetic anymore. But, you'll have to act quickly and stick to it. If you fuck around and keep eating bullshit, thinking that insulin injections will metabolize it for you, you are going to be in for all kinds of health problems; infections, blindness, neuropathy, amputations etc.

sorry to hear that, my homegirl is pregnant and she just got diagnosed as well, it really is plaguing our community

Wish you the very best in your trying times.

props to the fam for all the good advice in this thread eye opener for sure.

I have Diabetes also. My Blood Sugar level was 1280 when I went in the hospital (4 Days).
After I got out I spent a couple days depressed, Even though I wasn't while in the hospital..Weird.

DO NOT HIRE a personal Trainer like I did.

Cut down calorie intake to about 1500-2k a day. WALK or Light jog up to 2-3 miles getting better endurance.

Cut out, as much sweets and bad carbs as possible.
My diet now allows me to live on 25 bucks a week, and I'm not skimping on what I like.

Heres a Sample of my cupboard.
Bananas, Fresh Fruits, Nuts.
No salt at all. Grow my own seasonings.. very easy and takes up very little space.
Honey Wheat bread, Low carb wraps.
Cheerios, buy in bulk and save money.
Non-Sweet flavored tea.. Good for the soul and the body..literally.
Tuna and sea food.. good for ocular health and heart health.
Chicken.. and that's abotu it.

My "treat" is cheez it's. Also I eat unhealthy foods every saturday. Keeps you in touch, but with exercise, it wont hurt much.

TAKE YOUR DAMN MEDS....

YO CHECK THIS THREAD FROM A MONTH AGO..Read the posts from wootten Hathaway. he/she has a lot of knwledge of this. i have type 2 , and was diagnosed on 1/8/08 with an a1c of 9.9. i went back for a check up on 4/17/08 it dropped to 7.6. i stopped drinking brown liquor, cut back on beer, and watched my calorie and starch intake. now i going to be honest, i still don't drink brown liqour, but i have started eating out again and eating more fried food lately and i have my duarterly checkup in three weeks. but i'm not feeling as bad as i was. i started a new low carb low calerie diet las week, and hopefully my tests wont be as bad as i think. so you really have to discipline your self to give up alot of things you may love to eat. i'll check back in when i go in for my checkup.

real talk here. my fucking blood pressure has been up the last few weeks (i'm 36). wife has been monitoring and documenting for eventual trip to MD. shit is depressing. thought I was "different" because i excercise and eat decently. though i know the consequences of not getting treatment, it's fucking hard to make that appt.

anyone else been in this position?

peace to you brothers that posted earlier. it makes me feel better to know other dudes are dealing with health issues too. i appreciate the honesty.

thanks...

curious what sugar number level is considered diabetic?
You have to get a fasting blood sugar (you can go to a clinic if you don't have a doctor). If it's 126 or more, you are diabetic. Or if you get 2 random blood sugars above 200 you are diabetic.

1) Cheese and milk don't hurt diabetics any more so than any other carb. It has to be counted just like every other food.

Too much dairy can cause mucous buildup, and some people are lactose intolerant but these aren't diabetes related. Watch out for rice milk though because of its high sugar content. I go for soy milk now because its lower carb and higher protein.

2) Starches are carbs, meats are proteins. Proteins smooth out the spike in blood glucose (BG) you get from carb intake. It's actually better to have protein with carbs.

3) There is no part of this that makes sense!! I recommend getting into the habit of drinking hot green tea after every meal. Your body could use the extra antioxidants and it helps digest your meal. It also fills you up. Use either Stevia or Xylitol for sweetner or just get out of the habit of putting sweetner in your tea.

4) Fruits have sugar in them, they're best eaten with some protein. The protein keeps the fruit from "burning" out of your system as quickly so you don't get hungry as quickly.

5) Spinach is good, but if you're looking for natures perfect food, try Quinoa. Google it, its good shit. In general as far as vegetables go, variety is key, especially color variety. Sounds strange but its true. Watch out for carrots and other sugary veggies, they'll spike your BG if you do too much.

Take your meds until your a1c (you'll learn about these in 6 months) shows you've been in control for a year, then talk to your doctor about adjusting dosage with the goal of coming off them. Buy your meds at WalMart. They've got a $4 drug list that you don't even need insurance to take advantage of. For example, a 30 day supply of Metformin is only $4! And unlike Walgreens you don't have to pay a membership fee to get those drugs at the great prices.

30 minutes per day of heart pumping calisthenics. Walk my brother, walk! Work your way up to jogging at least a mile or two a day. If you prefer biking forget coasting and low gears. Work those leg muscles.

Your endo is going to give you a dietary routine. Stick to it. Don't fudge anything because you don't know how to yet. You and your body have to now get to know each other. You're not the same person physically as you were before the onset of diabetes. You've got a whole new lifestyle to develop so don't get discouraged.

Protect your extremities at all costs!!! No more sandals, no more barefeet. No more tight shoes that chafe. You have to spend the money for the good footwear! In fact, have your doctor send you to a foot doctor who can then write you a note that can be taken to a Nike store. That'll give you a major discount on athletic shoes! Make sure you're measured properly as you can't afford shoes that rub or bind.

In the winter, you have to wear gloves!

Good luck to you bro! Diabetes IS NOT a death sentence, its a condition that forces you to eat and live healthy. If you handle this right, you're going to be in the best condition of your life!

You can't take it right after eating, but you can do it a couple of hours after eating. If you have 2 of those over 200 then you are diabetic. I would do the overnight fast and then do a fasting glucose.

Also, you can not diagnose diabetes with a hemoglobin A1C number. That is only used to monitor how tight your sugar control has been over the last 3 months. You want that less than 6.5-7

Was diagnosed with Type II three months ago. Thought that it was the end of the world. Started eating better (whole grains, lots of water, no fried foods) I feel better than I have in ten or fifteen years. Do all of this and listen to your doctor.

There's some good info here. I'm type 2 and seeking any more insight that anyone can provide. I went to the doctor last week because I was feeling shity. I knew what it was, been ignoring the signs and previous diagnosis. Now I want to get this under control with doctor care, diet, exercise, meds, etc. Please share if you wish.

Sorry to Fam.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 over 3 years ago. I was over weight, blood sugar levels were near 200 and AC1 level was 11.5.

Lost 90 pounds, changed my diet (cut carbs), exercise, take an over the counter med called Glucocil (google it) with no side effects, check my blood sugar levels at least 3 times a day. (After breakfast, lunch and dinner) and just stay on top of it. My AC1 level is now 5.8 (Diabetics should have a AC1 under 7) and i went from 260 to 170. My doctor is amazed at my turnaround.

It can be done Bruh. You have to focus. Yeah i fall off the wagon sometimes (a hard weekend of drinking, etc). But I'm back on the wagon and on that trail again to staying in top of it.

Go to the American Diabetes Association website to get some information.

Thanks, Fam. Weight not a problem with me. Doctor told me this morning I have some kidney damage, and put me on a new med for it. Last week she gave me two for my blood sugar and advise me to take baby asprin daily for my heart. I have hypertension issues too. I appreciate your taking the time to respond, and value your advice.

Good thread. I recently had a physical and had a fasting blood glucose level of 89. Nurse told me I needed to watch that.

Damn. Good luck brothers. I hope this is a pre-warning to all of you who take your health for granted.

Google glycemic index...glycemic load....

Also Google insulin resistance....

Lifestyle change....lose weight. Lift weights....

Walk atleast 15 minutes after a meal.

The first thing I can tell you, don't look at it as a death sentence. You can live a normal life and enjoy the things you always have. You do have to exercise at least 30 minutes a day (not all at one time) and watch your carbs and processed sugars.
Lose weight and follow your doctor's orders. There will be sick days as they will tell you but you can recover fast with candy, soft drink, orange juice, etc. I live a healthy, normal life so you are not in it alone. Definitely take the classes that show you how to eat. You won't follow it. LOL but at lest try. I have to be reminded sometimes that I have it. Holla if you need advise.

stay away from white foods:
sugar, flour, white bread, excess starch, and alcohol

eat more whole grains, and excersice... stay on top of it, pleanty of info fam. stay up!!!

Yeah. Or for extreme measures you can rely on a liquid fresh greens diet. It basically resets your body. I think there was actually a documentary on this method

Eat real food. Learn to cook at least a few healthy dishes for yourself... if you make it, you know what's in it.

Actual plant life should be majority of your diet. Not bullshit in a box.

I have 7 family members that totally fixed their type 2 diabetes problems with a whole food plant based diet.

was having issues with my blood pressure from drinking and having my morning coffee extra sweet, now i rarely drink and my coffee
i just add a lil of summ flavored creamer blood pressure been on point every since...but the liquor use to hav my shit sky fucking high...

I see everyone is recommending diet change, which of course should be your primary change, but you should coat that with the right supplements:

1. Magneisum by Jigsaw great for both diabetes and blood pressure.
Amazon product ASIN B00O2T209E
2. Coq-10 Again great for both blood pressure, diabetes, and excellent for heart health.

3. Cucumin or tumeric powder - the turmeric powder is cheaper and needs to be taken with a teaspoon of olive oil. This shit here is the truth.

4. A great vitamin D3 supplement, especially because we as black people are usually so deficient in it. I personally use this liquid vitamin D supplement, as taking the vitamin in pill form is practically useless as it needs to be absorbed with some type of fat.

Amazon product ASIN B004HGF69I
These 4 in combination do a great job keeping your oxidative stress and inflammation down. It helped bring my blood pressure down tremendously from hypertention stage 2, without having taking meds. That along with getting off of fast foods and beginning to cook for myself.

Drinking lots of water is a great start. An evening walk helps too. It will help drop those lbs.
I used to stock my fridge with all types of sweet drinks. Sodas, Snapple, Gatorade, you name it. Now I only stock it with water. Definitely need to cut back on that Jack Daniels too. Good luck fam.
